It's allowed him and his husband to save money and pursue a more exciting lifestyle, he said. My husband and I quit our in-person jobs to accept remote positions and secretly moved to South America about four months ago. We use an external VPN router through which my work computer connects. Paying for VPN software itself wouldn't be sufficient, as the work computer would easily allow the company to see that the software had been installed. Our reasoning for wasting that much money on flights to pick up a work computer?
'REFUGE FOR WINTER' AND BEYONDVisitors and more permanent residents are also arriving from Germany, which was highly dependent on Russian gas before the Ukraine war and is anxious about possible winter energy shortages. Airlines will increase by 31% the number of seats available to the Canary Islands, the regional tourism office said. Airbnb, the short-term rentals firm, said searches for winter stays in southern Europe tripled between April and June. "Even before the energy crisis, we would have liked to be in Portugal because of the weather," the 28-year-old said. "But with the energy crisis, (being in Portugal) gives us more security because of the climate."
Their presence led to a run-up in housing costs and real estate investor activity. But elevated home prices are "being misinterpreted as a shortage" says Erin Sykes, economist for Nest Seekers. "I'm not convinced there is a housing shortage, more so a mismatch of housing types and locations," she told Insider. According to an October housing report from ATTOM, institutional investors nationwide accounted for only 6.7% of housing inventory in the third-quarter of 2022 — down from the 8.4% seen in Q3 of 2021. As homebuyer and investor activity fades, and more employers call workers back into the office, Sykes says the so-called housing shortage could be on its last leg.
Norma M. worked two remote jobs during the pandemic. The experience helped her get a foot into the publishing industry, but she wouldn't try it again. Ultimately, I decided to move ahead with interviews for the publishing role. I was relieved to see that I only had one standing meeting for the publishing job. It was still a contract role, but we had reached an agreement that they would continue renewing it for the foreseeable future.
Twitter CEO Elon Musk gave workers an ultimatum: Accept tougher working conditions or leave. Musk's failed ultimatum is proof that workers won't accept aggressive leadership anymore. A good CEO's response shouldn't show aggression: While CEOs can demand workers do their best, they can't do so with such force and with such disregard for workers' wellbeing and still expect to get good results. Even among those with less freedom than well-paid tech employees, many have unionized to demand better compensation and working conditions. In response, Twitter closed its offices until Monday.
In the age of remote work, many people have left coastal hubs for more affordable cities across America. But while the coronavirus pandemic created a surge in remote work, it isn't a pandemic novelty for companies to have a global reach. But the shift in which companies are now offering remote work options provides a clue to why time-zone bias is becoming worse. Jane took her job at the creative agency because she thought her local 9-to-5 working hours would be respected. It is important that companies be extra cognizant of what will happen if they continue to ignore and exploit remote workers.
Spain's parliament recently approved a "digital nomad visa" for foreign remote workers. That's slightly less than Portugal's digital nomad visa, which requires remote workers to make at least four times its minimum wage to apply. EyesWideOpen/Getty ImagesWith its favorable climate and proximity to major European hubs, it's no wonder why the Iberian peninsula is becoming a digital nomad hotspot. Before Portugal launched its digital nomad visa at the end of October, remote workers flocked to the country through its D7 visa, also known as a passive income visa. Spain's Startup Act and digital nomad visa have so far seen support from both sides of the political spectrum.
Tech startup GravyWork racked up an estimated $500,000 in costs due to a surprise from a remote worker, WSJ reported. CEO Alex Atwood didn't register his business in California and Texas, where an employee spent time working. Some workers take advantage of remote work policies by lying to their bosses and co-workers about their location. As a result, Atwood said that his company racked up between $20,000 and $30,000 in taxes, registration fees and penalties in surprise bills. A Berlin-based remote worker even went so far as to set up a personal computer with a VPN so the company can't track his location.

Even as more employers signal an end to remote work, tech startups and their investors are betting that it is here to stay, offering a range of digital tools designed to support a permanent workforce outside of the office. “Investors are super-pumped on remote,” Mr. Salam said. “Remote work is a durable phenomenon,” said Ravi Gupta, a partner at Sequoia who led the firm’s investment in Remote. Mr. Riggs said Frameable currently has hundreds of commercial customers, who rent its software with rates varying by the number of users. “I may be a bit biased, but I absolutely believe remote work is here to stay,” said Remote’s Mr. van der Voort.
Companies are using surveillance technologies to keep tabs on remote workers. Under current law, some level of employee surveillance is generally allowed. Some experts have called this "productivity paranoia" a sentiment that's led some companies to expand the use of various surveillance technologies. These are among the reasons Abruzzo's memo called on the NLRB to review companies' surveillance technologies and assess whether they restrict workers' rights. While the emergence of remote work has brought this surveillance into the spotlight in recent years, the legal landscape remains murky.
According to a survey by Digital.com, 75% of workers say they want to stay home with their pets instead of going into the office. Similarly, the ASPCA reports 90% of dogs adopted during the pandemic are still in the home. Pup owners surveyed by Veterinarians.org said their dogs inspired them to get out more and try new outdoor activities. Google, WeWork, Tripadvisor, Etsy, and even Ben & Jerry's also permit dogs in the office. In numerous surveys, workers have stressed the value they put on flexibility; many say it's even more important than money or advancement.
Hauser is originally from Wisconsin and moved to North Carolina seven years ago for work. And questions over abortion rights are fueling concerns about the future of access to birth control and gender-affirming care. The North Carolina Business Council, for one, declined to comment because this is "not an area of focus" for the group. Chuck Bryan is an IT professional who moved to North Carolina from Florida five years ago. He cited Kansas' referendum to preserve abortion rights as an example of what can happen when people use their voice in politics.
Experts say legislation that promotes salary transparency from the employer's side is key to closing racial and gender wage gaps. What the law requiresThe law specifically states that beginning Nov. 1, "employers advertising jobs in New York City must include a good faith salary range for every job, promotion, and transfer opportunity advertised." It covers job ads calling for full- or part-time employees, interns, domestic workers, independent contractors or any other category of worker protected by the New York City Human Rights Law. What to expect on Nov. 1Some major companies began including their pay ranges on job ads prior to the Nov. 1 deadline. If a company isn't complying with the law, job seekers and workers can file complaints or leave an anonymous tip with the city's Commission on Human Rights, which may initiate an investigation.
For the past two years, remote work has been in a state of will they or won't they. We asked Greenberg and other career experts about the best ways to convince your boss to let you work remotely. A growing number of states and municipalities are enacting salary transparency laws, a stepping stone toward eliminating wage discrepancies based on gender, race and other unfair practices. Here are a few important ways the push for greater pay transparency will change the way employers think about job listings. Even without a law, expect pay transparency to become the normPay transparency laws have been proliferating across the country, with a growing number of states including California, Colorado, Connecticut, Maryland and Washington enacting some type of salary transparency law. New York City's salary transparency law, meanwhile — set to go into effect Nov. 1 — includes employers with four or more employees, provided at least one works within New York City. Some companies have opted not to recruit in certain states because of their salary transparency laws, explicitly excluding remote candidates who hail from these states in their job postings.
Amazon told employees of its logistics operations center they must go into the office in person. Many of those employees were hired as remote workers in the past two years, meaning some will be forced to relocate to the hub's Phoenix offices – or lose their jobs. The freight logistics hub these employees work at, called the Relay Operations Center, is responsible for responding to unexpected shipping disruptions. Inside Amazon, remote work remains popular. Relay Operations Center employees did not take the survey, the results of which were obtained by Insider.
Some say "quiet quitting" is among the key reasons why. But "quiet quitting" likely isn't why. But while quiet quitting may be a real phenomenon and newly coined phrase, the practice is not a new one. "I don't think "quiet quitting" is real or affecting productivity growth," Adam Ozimek, chief economist at the policy organization Economic Innovation Group, wrote on Twitter last week. But while remote workers may be productive once they're up and running, it's possible new remote employees are less productive.

The country is focusing on its tourist capital, Bali, in an effort to lure in visitors for longer stays. "The goal is to attract foreign tourists to come to Bali and diverse other destinations," said acting Director General of Immigration Widodo Ekatjahjana at the launch of the visa on Tuesday.
