The bull case for Dave & Buster's Entertainment remains intact, Raymond James says. Analyst Brian M. Vaccaro maintained a strong buy rating on Dave & Buster's and raised his price target, saying the restaurant and entertainment firm's presentation at its analyst day this week supported his positive view on the stock. Dave & Buster's is outperforming the broader market this year, up 30%, while the S & P 500 is 13% higher. The analyst expects some investors to take a "wait and see" approach to Dave & Buster's, given a murky economic outlook that may hurt discretionary spending. "If comps can return to positive territory, high single-digit unit growth and margin expansion should drive 10%+ EBITDA growth over the next few years," Vaccaro wrote.

Analysts are split on how Coinbase shares perform from here as the company enters a battle with the Securities and Exchange Commission. Others see this development as a major threat to Coinbase's business, going beyond near-term financial implications. Additionally, with the complaint coming a day after the SEC sued Binance , Coinbase is likely to see new trading volumes near term, she added. Washington, DC CNN —The US labor market picked up momentum in May, once again defying expectations of a slowdown. Many economists, including those at the Fed, still expect a recession later in the year. The labor market and signs of future disinflationThe May jobs report mostly showed that the labor market held up. Some top economists have argued that the strong labor market has had a minor, albeit growing, impact on inflation. Hawkish Fed officials still think the Fed’s job isn’t done.

Snowflake should emerge as a long-term artificial intelligence winner despite a host of near-term snowstorms, Wall Street analysts think. The cloud stock dropped more than 16% last Thursday after the company shared product revenue guidance that fell short of consensus expectations and results that indicated slowing growth. Even with these headwinds, many analysts remain positive on Snowflake's long-term trajectory, viewing an acquisition and the transition to the cloud as two catalysts for the stock. Deutsche Bank's Brad Zelnick said in a recent note that AI, among other developments, should drive customer stickiness and improved use cases. A murky future Not everyone seems optimistic about Snowflake's AI potential, however.

The big catalyst were comments from Fed Governor and vice chair nominee Philip Jefferson and Philadelphia Fed President Fed Harker who both touted skipping a June rate hike. That said, data due on Friday about the U.S. job market "may change my mind." The Job Openings and Labor Turnover Survey, or JOLTS report, also showed layoffs declined significantly last month. After the JOLTS report, rate futures had priced in a nearly 70% chance of a rate increase next month. Some things seem like a little bit loose and so if the Fed is going to be on pause, it's time.

Reflecting investor optimism about passage, the cost of insuring exposure to a U.S. debt default dropped on Tuesday, but some concerns remained because of the tight timeline and opposition from some lawmakers. Last week, credit rating agency Fitch placed its "AAA" rating of U.S. sovereign debt on watch for a possible downgrade, citing downside risks including political brinkmanship and a growing debt burden. In a previous debt ceiling crisis in 2011 rating agency Standard & Poor's cut the U.S. top 'AAA' rating by one notch a few days after a debt ceiling deal, citing political polarization and insufficient steps to right the nation's fiscal outlook. "Even if a U.S. default is averted, a ratings downgrade could still happen," Vishwanath Tirupattur, a strategist at Morgan Stanley, said in a research note on Sunday. Some also fear a debt ceiling resolution could only provide short-term relief to markets because the U.S. Treasury is expected to quickly refill its account with bond sales, sucking out hundreds of billions of dollars of cash from the market.

Artificial intelligence plays led the stock market higher this week, as excitement over Nvidia's blowout earnings beat lifted other tech names. As of Friday morning, the AI darling is up nearly 22% week to date and still has 11% upside to the average analyst price target, per FactSet. However, it has about 3.5% downside to the average analyst price target. Meanwhile, Advanced Micro Devices gained nearly 18% week to date but has 15% downside to the average analyst price target. Lastly, Arista Networks has added nearly 15% so far this week and has another 4% upside to the average analyst price target.
"The overhangs on the market this year [are] the debt ceiling negotiation, hawkish Fed commentary and a banking crisis. It appears we are going to get a debt ceiling deal over the weekend, which should help the market to stabilize." The problem for many on the Street is the action in the S & P 500 Tech Index, up more than 5% this week; the Nasdaq Composite , ahead about 2.5%; and the S & P 500 , with a 0.3% gain, masks so much weakness beneath the surface. The S & P 500 consumer staples, materials, health care and utilities were all down between 2.4% and 3.2% this week, and the Dow Industrials were lower 1%. Although the S & P 500 is 9.5% higher so far in 2023, only a few stocks are doing well. "
But while the chipmaker remains the undisputed leader in the AI arms race, it's far from the only company benefiting from the frenzy overtaking Wall Street. NVDA 1D mountain Nvidia shares pop While Nvidia's results seem to reiterate its clear chip dominance, other names are gaining buzz on Wall Street and could see big gains as AI booms. Advanced Micro Devices Similar to Nvidia, Wall Street forecasts opportunities for Advanced Micro Devices in the near future. Needham also believes Taiwan Semiconductor's capabilities offer a "shortcut" for companies big and small looking to get into the competitive AI chip market. Its new delivery systems to help reduce power delivery network losses should also benefit shares in the long run.

U.S. Treasury Secretary Janet Yellen previously warned lawmakers that a default in early June is "highly likely." Prices rose 1.2% month on month, above a forecast of 0.8%. "April 2022 saw energy prices increase by 47.5%. Thanks to the government's energy price guarantee, this energy surge has now dropped out of the year-on-year equation, leading the comparative inflation rate to naturally fall." The International Monetary Fund on Tuesday joined the Bank of England in saying that it no longer expects a U.K. recession this year.

They know how it ends: with politicians waiting until the last minute before giving in and finally raising the debt ceiling before disaster strikes. On Friday, it looked like the White House and Republicans were getting closer to a deal on the debt ceiling before talks unexpectedly broke down. In 2011, the most serious near-default in American history, markets experienced volatility in the days and weeks before Washington reached a last-minute deal to raise the debt ceiling. None of this is to say markets are completely ignoring the debt ceiling drama today. The debt ceiling is a manufactured crisis that officials could have dealt with months ago.
Insiders are snapping up regional bank stocks following the crisis in the sector, according to a Raymond James analysis. During the period between March 10 and May 15, shares purchases totaled 2.3 million shares, while shares sold reached 335,000 shares. Since the first quarter of 2005 to the first quarter of 2023, only seven quarters notched positive net insider transactions. It's also the greatest number of net insider transactions since the end of 2009. Raymond James recently reiterated an outperform rating on the stock, citing its rising earnings power, though it also lowered its price target to $26.

At least that's the thinking of a small but growing chorus of voices on Wall Street who outline the case for further stock market gains after both the S & P 500 and Nasdaq Composite touched nine-month highs this past week. The VIX was trading around 16-17 late this week, signaling no great fear among professional traders. Walmart and other retailers this week highlighted consumers are spending less freely, but they're still spending , and that drives two thirds of the economy. Even Mark Haefele, chief investment officer at UBS Global Wealth Management, wrote late this week that he has to entertain what could go right in markets, despite the fact his own view is fundamentally bearish. If that "upside scenario" happens, UBS sees global stocks moving 13% higher by the end of December, and the S & P 500 surging another 6% — to north of 4,400.
New York CNN —During Thursday’s meeting with the CEOs of large banks, Treasury Secretary Janet Yellen told executives that more bank mergers may be necessary as the industry continues to navigate through a crisis, two people familiar with the matter told CNN. However, sources tell CNN that bank mergers were discussed during Yellen’s meeting with bank CEOs. Yellen echoed remarks from US regulators who have said there may be bank mergers in the current environment, one person familiar with the matter said. Yet earlier this month, regulators allowed JPMorgan Chase, the nation’s largest bank, to buy most of First Republic, the second-largest bank to fail in US history. Michael Hsu, acting comptroller of the currency, told lawmakers earlier this week that his agency would be willing to quickly consider bank mergers.
