The U.S. Supreme Court building is seen in Washington, U.S., August 31, 2023. The conservative justices have shown assertiveness in major rulings in the past two years. The court has ended its recognition of a constitutional right to abortion, expanded gun rights, restricted federal agency powers, rejected affirmative action in college admissions and broadened religious rights. The justices are opening their annual term on the first Monday of October, in keeping with tradition. The term debuts with some justices under ethics scrutiny after revelations this year of their ties to wealthy conservative benefactors.

But food companies' major bets on snacking come as investors fear the looming danger of Big Pharma's blockbuster obesity and diabetes drugs Wegovy and Ozempic. Younger generations snack more often than older consumers, said Kelsey Olsen, food and drink analyst for market research firm Mintel. Millennials and Gen-Z consumers tend to eat smaller meals that are closer together, creating more occasions to grab a snack. At the same time, Novo Nordisk's Ozempic and Wegovy have taken off, fueled by prescriptions to help patients lose weight. Some patients even report developing aversions to foods with higher sugar and fat content — a category that includes many big snack brands.

On the heels of that decision, a federal appeals court invalidated a federal law that bars an individual who is subject to a domestic violence restraining order from possessing a firearm. A three-judge district court panel struck down the plan in January, saying that race had been the predominant motivating factor. Three years ago, the Supreme Court limited the independence of the CFPB by invalidating its leadership structure. The court’s decision could impact whether the SEC and other agencies can conduct enforcement proceedings in-house, using administrative courts staffed with agency employees, or whether such actions must be brought in federal court. “It’s difficult to think of any other recent First Amendment cases in which the stakes were so high,” Jaffer added.

During the third quarter, U.S. dealmaking contributed to a larger-than-usual share of global activity and offset a decline in volumes in Europe and Asia Pacific, accounting for about half of global volumes. Deal volumes in Europe and Asia Pacific fell 31% and 9%, respectively. To date, private equity deal volumes have slumped 48% to $313.73 billion, compared to the same period last year. Deal activity driven by activist shareholders was muted as several big-name activists reached settlements with corporate boardrooms. U.S. President Joe Biden delivers remarks on Social Security and Medicare at the University of Tampa in Tampa, Florida, U.S. February 9, 2023. The ruling is the first to come from multiple lawsuits by drug companies and industry groups challenging the program. The drug price negotiation program is part of the Inflation Reduction Act, which Biden, a Democrat, signed last year. The Biden administration has repeatedly said there is nothing in the Constitution that prohibits drug price negotiations. Many other countries already negotiate drug prices.

AstraZeneca's tozorakimab drug for chronic obstructive pulmonary disease also seems underappreciated, with a potential to reach $4.5 billion in peak sales, according to Jefferies. The firm also suggests up to $3.5 billion in sales for AstraZeneca's eplontersen , a drug aimed at treating hereditary transthyretin-mediated amyloid polyneuropathy. The pharmaceutical giant is also poised to be the frontrunner in breast cancer treatments. Another one of AstraZeneca's breast cancer therapies, also being developed with Daiichi Sankyo, came out with positive news Friday. Its experimental precision drug datopotamab deruxtecan demonstrated an improvement in slowing the progression of a common type of breast cancer in a late-stage trial.

A few compounds picked by AI are now in development, but those bets will take years to play out. Reuters interviews with more than a dozen pharmaceutical company executives, drug regulators, public health experts and AI firms show, however, that the technology is playing a sizeable and growing role in human drug trials. The U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) said it had received about 300 applications that incorporate AI or machine learning in drug development from 2016 through 2022. Without AI, Bayer said it would have spent millions more, and taken up to nine months longer to recruit volunteers. Finding real-world patients by mining electronic patient data can be done manually, but using AI speeds up the process dramatically.
