Israel observes the first anniversary of the Oct. 7 attacks as it steps up attacks on Gaza and Lebanon. The people of Gaza have endured an unmitigated humanitarian catastrophe as Israel carries out one of the most intensive bombing campaigns in history. Gaza was already impoverished, overcrowded and largely inescapable, blockaded by Israel and Egypt for 17 years. Life-threatening storm surges are due to hit the state’s Gulf Coast as Hurricane Milton is set to make landfall on Wednesday. CNN —Africa is home to the world’s largest free trade agreement, in terms of number of countries, territory, and population – the African Continental Free Trade Area (AfCFTA). According to the Economic Commision for Africa, African countries continue to trade with the rest of the world more than among themselves. Aliko Dangote has been talking about the fact that he needs 35 visas to travel across the African continent. As with Gaza, US officials say Israel was initially planning for a much larger ground incursion into Lebanon before the US convinced it to scale back. ‘The right moment’ for diplomacyThe US still wants to see Lebanon ceasefire talks resume, officials said, and US officials continue to believe that the conflict can only be resolved diplomatically. Nasrallah and other members of Hezbollah’s senior leadership are now dead as a result of Israel’s operations in Lebanon. Earlier in the day, a reluctant Biden told reporters he’d be “comfortable with [Israel] stopping” the campaign in Lebanon that risked further inflaming the region. Behind closed doors, sources say, Biden offered reluctant support for eliminating Hezbollah infrastructure along Israel’s border and in southern Lebanon, as long as Israel’s operations remained limited in nature.

How to watch the Draconid meteor shower
  + stars: | 2024-10-07 | by ( Ashley Strickland | ) edition.cnn.com   time to read: +5 min
CNN —Keep your eyes on the night skies to see the elusive Draconid meteor shower, expected to peak Monday evening into early Tuesday. However, the Draconid meteor shower is on the sparse side. A meteor streaks across the sky during the Draconid meteor shower as seen over Howick rocks in Northumberland in northeast England in October 2021. If you live in an urban area, you might want to take a drive to avoid city lights, which can make the meteor shower seem faint. Meanwhile, sky-gazers can anticipate a busy meteor shower season to close out 2024.

Perhaps the most important thing to bring with you: a “go bag” full of emergency supplies. Go bags exist to save you from having to run around and gather items when a threatening situation is imminent. The contents of a family’s go bag could mean the difference between life or death, depending on how bad a situation becomes, according to Jonathan Sury, senior staff associate at the National Center for Disaster Preparedness, or NCDP, at Columbia Climate School. Your must-havesMost of the items disaster preparedness experts suggest you include in a go bag are things you can find around your house. Just because someone puts together a “go bag” does not mean that person is prepared, Montano warned.

London Reuters —A British doctor on Monday pleaded guilty to an audacious but unsuccessful plot to kill his mother’s partner with a fake Covid-19 vaccine, which involved him forging medical documents and dressing in disguise to inject his victim with poison. Thomas Kwan, 53, passed himself off as a nurse and even took his own mother’s blood pressure before administering poison to her partner, Patrick O’Hara, in Newcastle, northern England. This undated handout photo of Thomas Kwan wearing a disguise was found on his computer and had been used to make a fake ID card. Tropical Storm Milton rapidly intensified into a Category 1 hurricane Sunday with its path aimed at Florida, less than two weeks after Hurricane Helene made landfall in the state. The storm debuted as a hurricane Monday afternoon after producing sustained winds of 80 mph and continued to strengthen by drawing fuel from the Gulf of Mexico's sultry waters. Forecasters said Milton was likely to reach major hurricane status, denoting a Category 3, 4, or 5 storm Monday. It was pushing out maximum sustained winds estimated to be 80 mph, with some higher gusts, the hurricane center said, and moving east at 6 mph. CNN —Israel’s military says it has encircled Jabalya, northern Gaza and launched a new ground operation, after seeing signs of Hamas rebuilding, despite nearly a year of fighting and strikes in the territory. The Israeli military issued a fresh evacuation order for residents in northern Gaza, adding it had expanded the scope of the “humanitarian area” in Al-Mawasi. In May, CNN reported that the Israeli military had renewed its fighting in northern Gaza where it had claimed, in January, to have dismantled Hamas’ command structure. During that period, the Israeli military said Hamas was trying to “reassemble” in the area, raising doubts about whether Israel’s goal of eradicating the group in the enclave is realistic. The Israeli offensive that followed in Gaza – which Israel says is aimed at destroying Hamas – has killed more than 41,000 people and triggered a humanitarian crisis.

Tropical Storm Milton formed in the southwestern Gulf of Mexico Saturday morning, just hours after it became a tropical depression, , according to the National Hurricane Center. This new storm formation comes less than 10 days after Hurricane Helene made landfall in Florida, and is forecast to strengthen into a hurricane, bringing life-threatening conditions to the state's west coast next week. Maximum sustained winds from Tropical Storm Milton are estimated to be 40 miles per hour with higher gusts, the NHC said. Hurricane and storm surge watches will likely be required for certain regions of Florida on Sunday, many of which have just been hard-hit by Hurricane Helene. The National Weather Service placed the region in the potential path of Tropical Storm Milton, although it is still too early to tell how the storm will impact the county.

Scientists grow mystery tree from 1,000-year-old seed

But it doesn’t mean that scientists aren’t interested in bringing the past back to life in some form. Dig thisThe tree, which the study authors believe may have a biblical connection, is seen at 12 years old. Remarkably, the tree thrived and now stands 10 feet (3 meters) tall, although it has never flowered or produced fruit. Using DNA sequencing, the researchers identified the mystery tree as part of the Commiphora genus, but its exact species is unknown and likely extinct. Scientists aim to extract DNA from the remains to learn more about those buried there and whether they were related.

A portrait of Hezbollah chief Hassan Nasrallah sits amid destruction in a area targeted overnight by Israeli airstrikes in Saksakiyeh on September 26, 2024. The potential successor to slain Hezbollah leader Sayyed Hassan Nasrallah has been out of contact since Friday, a Lebanese security source said on Saturday, after an Israeli airstrike that is reported to have targeted him. The Lebanese security source and two other Lebanese security sources said that ongoing Israeli strikes on Beirut's southern suburb — known as Dahiyeh — since Friday have kept rescue workers from scouring the site of the attack. The loss of Nasrallah's rumored successor would be yet another blow to Hezbollah and its patron Iran. The Lebanese security official told Reuters that Saturday's strike on a Palestinian refugee camp in Tripoli killed a member of Hamas, his wife and two children.

Hezbollah has also been accused of obstructing the election of a new president, leaving Lebanon leaderless for the past two years. CNN —To say that there have been many twists and turns in the tale of the three-and-a-half-year cruise is something of an understatement. Villa Vie Odyssey initially set off from Belfast, Northern Ireland on Monday night after a delay of around four months, but didn’t get very far. Villa Vie CEO Mike Petterson told CNN on Friday that the ship would remain in France for one day, before heading to Bilbao, Spain. Petterson previously indicated that the delayed departure was due to a longer than usual certification process. While the ship was built in 1993, it has been held to the standards of a new vessel, said Petterson.
