IMAX on Wednesday posted third-quarter earnings showing its second highest-grossing quarter ever at the global box office, led by Universal's "Oppenheimer." The quarter was behind only the fourth quarter of 2019, when "Joker" and "Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker" opened, in terms of grosses, IMAX said. In the third quarter, IMAX also generated 120 new signings for new and upgraded IMAX systems across the world. The company delivered a record performance in the third quarter," Gelfond said during the call. Looking to next year, IMAX expects "some movement" due to effects felt from the Hollywood actors' strike, Gelfond said.

The major entertainment studios and the union representing tens of thousands of striking actors will return to the negotiating table on Tuesday, less than two weeks after talks were suspended because the sides remained far apart on significant issues. The restart of negotiations was announced in a joint statement on Saturday from the Alliance of Motion Picture and Television Producers, which bargains on behalf of the studios, and SAG-AFTRA, the actors’ union. On Oct. 9, the Writers Guild of America ratified its new contract and there had been hope that a new deal with the actors would follow. The strikes have been devastating financially for many, both within and outside the industry. But an agreement with the actors would mean getting back to work without losing the entirety of the fall television schedule or having next summer’s moviegoing season upended.

Net neutrality, blunted under Trump, may soon be revived

Demonstrator on the issue of net neutrality at the U.S. Capitol February 27, 2018 in Washington, DC. Net neutrality is poised for a resurgence after the Federal Communications Commission voted Thursday to begin the process of reestablishing the so-called open internet rules. The vote revives a debate that last came to a head in 2017 when the agency voted to reverse the net neutrality rules created just a couple of years earlier. Republican Commissioner Brendan Carr pointed to statements from Democratic lawmakers in support of net neutrality and called the earlier campaign for the rules a "viral disinformation campaign." "We're now faced with advocates who can't accept that they won and that we have de facto net neutrality," Republican Commissioner Nathan Simington said.

Whether it's streaming or traditional TV, sports keep audiences coming back to their screens — and Netflix is working on getting more into the game. Netflix announced it would broadcast "The Netflix Cup" live, a matchup between athletes that appeared in the Formula 1 docuseries and the golf series "Full Swing." Even though customers are fleeing traditional TV, from the cable-TV bundle to broadcast, those that stick around often do so for the live sports. That showed in September, when the return of the National Football League and college football seasons propelled both broadcast and cable-TV viewership. It has been a gradual move toward both sports and live streaming — Netflix had technical issues when it aired the finale of reality show "Love is Blind" earlier this year — but one the streamer appears ready to make.

A Delta Airlines passenger jet approaches to land at LAX during the outbreak of the coronavirus disease (COVID-19) in Los Angeles, California, U.S., April 7, 2021. Recent strikes by Hollywood talent and United Auto Workers union members are a "drag" on business travel demand, which is otherwise recovering, Delta Air Lines President Glen Hauenstein said Thursday. The strikes have had "a not insignificant change in the business travel to and from Los Angeles as well as now the UAW strike, which curtailed a significant amount of the business in Detroit," Hauenstein said on an earnings call Thursday. But Hollywood actors, represented by the Screen Actors Guild-American Federation of Television and Radio Artists, are still on strike. Delta's Hauenstein noted that demand from technology and financial services customers posted double-digit growth in the third quarter, contributing to an overall rebound for business travel.

It's an effort to diversify viewership and advertising opportunities — and to capitalize on a growing Hispanic streaming audience. Hispanic audiences spend nearly nine hours per day consuming media, the majority of which is TV viewership, according to a recent study from Nielsen based on viewership habits from July. The study noted the Hispanic audience has been at "the forefront of cord-cutting," making it a growing majority of streaming viewership, too. According to the findings, Hispanic viewers spend more than 50% of their time consuming TV through streaming, eclipsing the general population, at nearly 40%. Traditional media companies across the board have been doling out cash for sports as live games still command the highest traditional TV viewership.

Elon Musk’s X is a black hole of value
  + stars: | 2023-10-03 | by ( Jennifer Saba | ) www.reuters.com   time to read: +3 min
NEW YORK, Oct 3 (Reuters Breakingviews) - X is still worth something, but not for the people running it. loadingDespite Musk’s big pronouncements about pushing into subscriptions, X has historically relied on advertising, which contributed over 90% of revenue when it was a public company. Put it all together, and X isn’t just worth less than Musk paid for it, but likely less than its debt. Put that on the same enterprise-value-to-sales multiple as Snap, which is down to a mere 3 times, and X is worth around $8 billion. Like a financial black hole, X threatens to consume most of whatever value it once had.

Brands backing Kansas City Chiefs' player Travis Kelce, like Pfizer and Campbell's Soup, are also getting big boosts in engagement from Kelce's possible relationship with pop star Taylor Swift. Pfizer launched a campaign starring Kelce on Sept. 22 encouraging people to get the updated COVID-19 booster shot. There was a 32% increase in searches about Pfizer when that ad ran after Swift's Sept. 25 appearance, compared to before. EDO also found that Pfizer ads with Kelce drove 27% more search activity than Pfizer ads that did not feature him. Also, a Kelce-led TV ad from Experian posted on YouTube on Oct. 1 has already received more than 800,000 views, while a Kelce-less Experian TV ad promoting the same product has only accumulated 189,000 views.

Shortly after that, the Federal Communications Commission chair announced a proposal to reinstate net neutrality rules, which prohibit internet service providers from favoring certain websites over others. It included appointing strong enforcers and starting the White House Competition Council. Even as several prongs of competition policy take shape, the Biden administration is up against the clock. That timeline may be particularly concerning for the ability to implement and uphold net neutrality rules, given that the FCC didn't have a Democratic majority able to advance the rulemaking until just this week.
