President Biden’s top military adviser has told China that the United States is open to resuming military-to-military communication that Beijing suspended last year to protest then-Speaker Nancy Pelosi’s visit to Taiwan. The chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff, Gen. Charles Q. U.S. officials are hoping the two leaders will announce a resumption of military dialogue there. General Brown, who is traveling in the region this week, said that the reopening of the communications channel was important to prevent misunderstandings that could cascade into crises. “Just to ensure that there’s no miscalculation in that dialogue, to me, is hugely important,” he said during a briefing with reporters.

CNN —President Biden’s highly anticipated meeting with Chinese President Xi Jinping is set for next Wednesday in the San Francisco Bay Area, senior US administration officials said, setting up a test of whether the two men can slow a downward spiral in relations at a moment of heavy global turbulence. It includes restoring military-to-military communication between the two countries, a chief objective for Biden, who plans to press Xi on the issue. Despite a deep and apparently warm personal relationship cultivated during their time as vice presidents, Biden and Xi have overseen a deterioration in US-China relations to the lowest level in decades. That meeting was intended to establish a baseline for the relationship amid heightened economic and military tension. Ahead of next week’s meeting, US Treasury Secretary Janet Yellen invited Chinese Vice Premier He Lifeng, known as the country’s “economic tsar,” for a two-day meeting starting Thursday.

David DePape lived a solitary life, worked carpentry jobs and was seemingly obsessed with right-wing conspiracy theories on the internet, where he railed about “wokism,” questioned the Holocaust and embraced Pizzagate and QAnon. Then in October 2022, the police said, Mr. DePape, 43, bust into Nancy Pelosi’s San Francisco home and bludgeoned her husband, when she was still the House speaker. The case will now be presented to a jury when Mr. DePape’s federal trial in San Francisco opens on Thursday. That the case is coming to trial at all is something of a surprise, given the evidence. Mr. DePape admitted to the crimes in a police interview after his arrest, prosecutors say.

SAN FRANCISCO (AP) — The man accused of breaking into former House Speaker Nancy Pelosi’s San Francisco home, bludgeoning her husband with a hammer and seeking to kidnap her goes on trial Thursday. Where’s Nancy?” DePape asked, standing over Paul Pelosi around 2 a.m. holding a hammer and zip ties, according to court records. Nancy Pelosi was in Washington and under the protection of her security detail, which does not extend to family members. Nancy Pelosi’s husband of 60 years later underwent surgery to repair a skull fracture and injuries to his right arm and hands. After his arrest, DePape, 43, allegedly told a San Francisco detective that he wanted to hold Nancy Pelosi hostage.

Washington CNN —The Biden administration’s senior-most national security officials are traveling this week to the Indo-Pacific, signaling that the administration’s China strategy remains a priority as it grapples with an increasingly volatile Middle East. Blinken and Austin will both travel to India for a 2+2 Dialogue with their counterparts. Meanwhile, talks between US and Chinese officials stalled until this summer when Blinken met with senior Chinese officials in Beijing. Asked by CNN on Monday if Austin would be meeting with any PRC officials during his travel, Pentagon spokesman Brig. Opinion | Donald Trump Has Closed the Republican Mind

The poet Frederick Turner described “The Closing of the American Mind” as “the most thoughtful conservative analysis of the nation’s cultural sickness.”Yet today it is the American right that most fully embodies the attitudes that so alarmed Mr. Bloom. We see that most clearly in the right’s embrace of Donald Trump and the MAGA movement he represents. Mr. Trump is cruel and remorseless, compulsive and vindictive, an accomplished conspiracy theorist. While doing this, Mr. Trump has expanded his lead over his nearest rival in the race for the 2024 Republican nomination to more than 40 points. In other words, no matter how much wrongdoing Mr. Trump engages in, however outrageous and brutish his conduct, he remains wildly popular.

Details of how Japan is paring back military procurement due to currency fluctuations have not been previously reported. China, which has not ruled out using military force to bring Taiwan under its control, has expressed concern about Japan's military spending plans, accusing it of displaying a "Cold War mentality." In December, defence ministry officials discussed an order for 34 twin-rotor Chinook transport helicopters at roughly 15 billion yen per aircraft, two of the sources said. She declined to comment on whether the defence ministry had dropped an order for the seaplane. A ministry spokesperson confirmed the companies delivered a letter on Oct 25 to Defence Minister Minoru Kihara urging the government to proceed with the defence procurement as planned.

Weak yen forces Japan to shrink historic military spending plan

Since the plan was unveiled in December, the yen has lost 10% of its value against the dollar, forcing Tokyo to reduce its ambitious defense procurement plan, which was then-calculated to cost $320 billion, the sources said. Details of how Japan is paring back military procurement due to currency fluctuations have not been previously reported. China, which has not ruled out using military force to bring Taiwan under its control, has expressed concern about Japan's military spending plans, accusing it of displaying a "Cold War mentality." Speaker Mike Johnson is less wealthy than most lawmakers and doesn't appear to have a DC residence. But where does the man who just recently ascended to the next spot in the line of succession sleep when he's in Washington, DC? Most likely in his small congressional office on the unglamorous, fluorescent-lit fifth floor of the Cannon House Office Building, according to several lawmakers and a long-time friend of Rep. Mike Johnson, the new speaker of the House. There are likely dozens of lawmakers sleeping in their offices each night, and some well-known former House members have been known to do it, including Florida Gov. Meanwhile, former House Speaker Nancy Pelosi — one of the richest members of Congress — has a residence in Washington, DC's Georgetown neighborhood.

After Boebert won her last race by just 546 votes, she began revamping her campaign strategy. So-called ballot harvesting, which she's decried as an underhanded Democratic tactic, will be part of her campaign strategy. While campaigning in the district this election, Boebert seems “more empathetic" than her disruptive national profile. At events and debates in the last election, Boebert railed against then-Speaker Nancy Pelosi, who became a foil for bloated government, a broken system and Democratic demagoguery. After Colorado's largely city dwellers voted to reintroduce wolves to Colorado, Boebert has also proposed legislation to give ranchers greater recourse to defend their flocks.

Noticeably missing from the line-up was China’s own defense minister. China would continue to “deepen strategic coordination” with Russia’s military, and it was willing, Zhang added, to develop China-US military relations. Security coordination between China and Russia has tightened in recent years amid rising tensions between each with the US and its allies. The security forum also comes as the US and China are attempting to navigate their contentious relationship that includes frictions over Taiwan and Beijing’s aggression in the South China Sea. Its officials have declined American outreach for high level meetings, in what was widely seen as a protest against sanctions Washington placed on former defense minister Li in 2018, prior to his time as defense minister, for weapons purchases from Russia.

In turn, leaders like former Democratic House Speaker Nancy Pelosi or Republican Speaker Paul Ryan collected tens of millions of dollars to divert to politically valuable campaigns elsewhere in the party. Florida Republican Matt Gaetz has raised nearly $2 million this year, helped by fundraising emails sent in the lead-up to his successful effort to remove Republican Representative Kevin McCarthy as House speaker. Vocal conservatives Marjorie Taylor Greene and Lauren Boebert have raised $2.7 million and $2.4 million, respectively, for their 2024 House campaigns. McCarthy raised 2.9% of House Republicans’ cash in the 2022 elections. House Speaker Mike Johnson is much less wealthy than other members of Congress. He doesn't trade any stocks and has a home mortgage valued between $250,000 and $500,000. He's made more than $120,000 since 2018 teaching online classes at Liberty University. There's little publicly-available information about Johnson's activities at the university, and Insider has reached out to the university for further details. CNN —A Chinese fighter jet came within 10 feet of a US Air Force B-52 bomber flying over the South China Sea on Tuesday, according to the US military. Beijing cut off the communications after then-House Speaker Nancy Pelosi visited Taiwan last year, infuriating Chinese leaders. China uses its military might to assert its claims of sovereignty in the South China Sea and beyond, including Taiwan. In 2022, the Chinese military increased its aggressive actions towards the independent island territory, including ballistic missile overflights, military aircraft flying into Taiwan’s aerial identification zone and major exercises near Taiwan. Though Xi has said he is seeking the peaceful unification of Taiwan with China, he has not renounced the use of military force to achieve his goal.

On Wednesday, GOP Rep. Mike Johnson became the newest speaker of the House. Now, with new Speaker Mike Johnson at the helm, the party may grapple for some time with how opposite Johnson is from his predecessor. Johnson's sudden rise to becoming speaker comes just over a year before the 2024 election where the Republican Party is aiming to regain control. Neither prediction ultimately came true: Republicans only gained a very slim majority of the House and managed to lose footing in the Senate. Less than two years later, it's now Johnson's responsibility to make sure the Republican Party remains in power.

U.S. Republican Representative from California Kevin McCarthy speaks with Republican Representative from Ohio Jim Jordan as the U.S. House of Representatives continues voting for new speaker at the U.S. Capitol in Washington, DC, January 4, 2023. Rep. Kevin McCarthy, R-Calif., is floating a plan that would reinstall him as House speaker and make conservative Trump ally Rep. Jim Jordan the assistant speaker, according to three sources familiar with the matter. The proposed alliance aims to unite warring factions of the House Republican Conference, which has been leaderless since McCarthy was ejected from the speaker's office. A source briefed on the proposal likened it to the arrangement Democrats had when Rep. Nancy Pelosi was speaker and Rep. Katherine Clark was assistant speaker. "Kevin speaker, Jordan assistant speaker," the source said.

He attached remarks by Johnson praising Louisiana's abortion ban and penalty of "hard labor for 1-10 years" and fines of $10,000-$100,000 for those who perform abortions. The Biden-Harris campaign and other groups circulated and posted images of three bills Johnson has sponsored that the Democrats said would "ban abortion nationwide." Already, six states – Michigan, California, Vermont, Kentucky, Kansas and Montana – have passed referendums that either enshrined abortion rights or rejected efforts to undo the right to abortion. Another referendum, one that would guarantee abortion rights, is on the ballot next month in Ohio. These numbers have Democrats believing they can keep the White House and flip the House – and Johnson has put a face to that effort.
