Oil prices are, incredibly, lower today than they were before the short-lived uprising in Russia — one of the world’s most important players in the oil market. But some oil market veterans wonder if the pendulum has now swung too far in the other direction. An actual disruption to Russia’s oil flows would be a game-changer for the oil market, and perhaps the world economy. That country’s civil war shut down oil export terminals — and even though Libya’s output is much smaller than that of Russia, oil prices shot higher. For now, the oil market is betting there won’t be a repeat of the Libya unrest in Russia.

New York CNN —The Small Business Administration distributed more than $200 billion in potentially fraudulent Covid-19 relief funds, according to a federal watchdog. At least 17% of the $1.2 trillion distributed by the SBA was wasted in fraud, the report found. Most of the fraud apparently happened through the EIDL funds, with the inspector general estimating more than $136 billion of fraudulent activity in that program. While the program successfully helped many companies pay workers during the pandemic, it was plagued by questionable lending and rampant fraud. To date, the agency has recovered nearly $30 billion in funds, according to the report.

New York CNN Business —The United States is recovering faster than its peers from the historic bout of inflation squeezing families and souring the mood of the nation, according to a new analysis from White House economists. To address that, the White House economists built an apples-to-apples inflation metric that makes certain adjustments to how shelter costs factor into overall inflation. But we are very heartened and happy to see the trend going where it is,” a CEA official told CNN in a phone interview. And here’s the thing about inflation: It is undeniably down in the United States.”Two independent economists that CNN shared the CEA report with support the logic powering the analysis. That is absolutely a painful thing,” the CEA official said.

Periods of extreme heat stress the grid by spiking demand for electricity as families and businesses crank up the air conditioning to stay cool. Power grid officials have warned that large swaths of the United States could face blackouts if it’s a hot summer. “Two-thirds of North America is at risk of energy shortfalls this summer during periods of extreme demand,” the North American Energy Reliability Corporation (NERC) concluded in its summer outlook published last month. The risk of blackouts comes into play only if there is extreme heat. But many Americans in the South and Central regions of the United States are dealing with extreme heat right now.

US stocks, meanwhile, have managed to pull up from their recent bear market into bull territory. Still, there’s good reason for investors to be optimistic, says Indrani De, head of global investment research at FTSE Russell. That makes sense, since tech and energy stocks have largely been driving markets upward over the last few weeks. For instance, leading venture capital firm Sequoia Capital held just more than $1 billion at SVB, according to the FDIC document. The FDIC document shows that Circle held $3.3 billion at SVB, a figure that the stablecoin company previously disclosed.

According to Bloomberg, that document was accidentally released unredacted by the FDIC in response to a Freedom of Information Act request. For instance, leading venture capital firm Sequoia Capital, held just more than $1 billion at SVB, according to the FDIC document. New York CNN Business —The Covid-19 pandemic exposed glaring weaknesses in America’s medical supply chains, causing a frantic scramble for masks, respirators and other gear needed to fight the virus. Now, a bipartisan effort in Congress is attempting to boost medical supply chain resilience and ease the country’s reliance on less friendly nations like China for critical medical supplies – before the next disaster strikes. The bill aims to improve supply chain resilience by giving the White House the ability to diversify and expand supply networks while simultaneously eliminating unneeded trade barriers. Earlier this month, the White House hailed the end of the supply chain nightmare that had sent consumer prices surging and left some store shelves empty. The administration released a scorecard that indicated dozens of recommendations from a 2021 supply chain review have been implemented, including some related to strained medical supply chains.

New York CNN —Drivers in the state of Washington are celebrating the official start of summer with an unwelcome sight: America’s most expensive gas prices. Prior to the past few days, Washington has never been the most expensive state for gas in data going back to 2005, GasBuddy told CNN. Even though Washington has the highest average price, gas stations near major California cities are still charging heavily for gas. Washington state’s average gas price is nearly $2 a gallon above that of America’s cheapest state for fuel: Mississippi, where gas prices average $3.01 a gallon. No state has enjoyed a bigger plunge in gas prices than Delaware, where the state average is down by $1.61 a gallon over the past year, according to AAA.

New York CNN —Democratic Sens. Elizabeth Warren and Ron Wyden are calling on the Justice Department’s antitrust division to inspect the controversial partnership between the PGA Tour and the Saudi Arabian Public Investment Fund. In a letter to senior DOJ officials on Tuesday, Warren and Wyden argued the deal will allow Saudi Arabia to “sportswash” its “egregious human rights record” and would violate multiple provisions of antitrust law. “Significantly, the deal appears to have a substantial adverse impact on competition, violating several provisions of U.S. antitrust law, regardless of whether the deal is structured as a merger or some sort of joint venture,” the senators added. The letter comes after Democratic Sen. Richard Blumenthal announced the Permanent Subcommittee on Investigations has launched a probe into the deal.

New York CNN Business —Many top business leaders are seriously worried that artificial intelligence could pose an existential threat to humanity in the not-too-distant future. Forty-two percent of CEOs surveyed at the Yale CEO Summit this week say AI has the potential to destroy humanity five to ten years from now, according to survey results shared exclusively with CNN. The business leaders displayed a sharp divide over just how dangerous AI is to civilization. While 34% of CEOs said AI could potentially destroy humanity in ten years and 8% said that could happen in five years, 58% said that could never happen and they are “not worried.”In a separate question, Yale found that 42% of the CEOs surveyed say the potential catastrophe of AI is overstated, while 58% say it is not overstated. The CEOs indicated AI will have the most transformative impact in three key industries: healthcare (48%), professional services/IT (35%) and media/digital (11%).

While Baby Boomers and even Traditionalists (born 1928-1945) are ramping up spending, Gen X, Gen Z and Millennials are cutting back as they grapple with high housing costs and looming student debt payments. If not for the aggressive spending by Boomers, Tinsley said, overall consumer spending would have been even more negative. Bank of America spending data shows a noticeable bump in spending by households that received the cost-of-living boost. The student debt freeze, in effect since March 2020 when the Covid pandemic erupted, is expected to conclude by the end of August. For millions of Gen Z and Millennials, the return of student debt payments will mean less money for spending on restaurants and vacations.

Why it matters: The count of publicly listed companies traded on US exchanges has fallen substantially from its peak in 1996. It’s not that America has half as many companies as 30 years ago – it’s that companies are increasingly staying private, largely outside the scrutiny of the public eye. Publicly listed companies are subject to regulatory oversight and disclosure requirements, which help ensure transparency and maintain investor confidence. “I think it’s natural that companies would delay going public when valuations get halved and investors are not enthusiastic about investing in new companies,” said Kennedy. Some private equity funds have even taken advantage of the bear market to buy up publicly traded companies.

New York CNN Business —During a closed-door meeting with business leaders on Thursday, Treasury Secretary Janet Yellen stressed that the United States wants to work with China on urgent global challenges, a person familiar with the matter told CNN. The huddle with CEOs took place in Washington, where Yellen met with the board of the US-China Business Council, a group that promotes trade between the world’s two largest economies. Yellen’s meeting with the US-China Business Council comes amid high tensions between the United States and China in the wake of the Chinese spy balloon incident. During a speech in April, Yellen said the United States and China “can and need to find a way to live together” despite their differences. “A growing China that plays by international rules is good for the United States and the world,” Yellen said.

New York CNN —White House officials on Thursday hailed the unclogging of supply chains and suggested that further easing of bottlenecks will help cool inflation. “Critical supply chains are significantly more fluid and resilient than they were when the President took office,” White House officials wrote in a supply chain scorecard shared first with CNN. The traffic jam of vessels backed up ports, once a symbol of the supply chain crisis, has all but disappeared. The White House economists said it is a “positive development for consumers” and struck a hopeful tone it will continue. The blog post said there is a high correlation between producer prices and supply chain pressures, suggesting the easing in supply chain pressure may continue to cool inflation.

The case for a 2023 US recession is crumbling

New York CNN —Many CEOs, investors and economists had penciled in 2023 as the year when a recession would hit the American economy. But the case for a 2023 US recession is crumbling for a simple reason: America’s jobs market is way too strong. Zandi is growing more confident that 2023 won’t be the year when a downturn will begin. “We’re running out of time for a 2023 recession,” Justin Wolfers, an economics professor at the University of Michigan, told CNN. Friday’s jobs report did offer some conflicting signals, especially in the household survey, which economists put less weight on because it tends to be noisier.

New York CNN —Fitch Ratings is keeping the United States on watch for a potential credit rating downgrade even after Congress passed a last-minute bill to avert a disastrous default. Although the resolution to the debt ceiling fight is a “positive,” Fitch expressed deep concern about the recurring brinksmanship and worsening polarization in Washington. That reasoning is similar to the rationale behind the downgrade by S&P in 2011 – an unprecedented step that occurred after Congress agreed to raise the debt ceiling. The latest debt ceiling battle has prompted more calls for reform or even eliminating the debt ceiling. This isn’t the first time the credit ratings firm has sounded the alarm about the messy state of affairs in America.

Washington CNN —A Fidelity fund has slashed its estimate of Twitter’s value amid ongoing chaos at the company, implying the social media platform may be worth only a third of its value compared to when Elon Musk acquired it in October. According to a monthly disclosure, Fidelity’s Blue Chip Growth Fund reported that its stake in Twitter was worth $6.55 million at the end of April. That’s down from the $19.66 million the Fidelity fund said its stake was worth in October as Musk was finalizing the acquisition. The revision implies Twitter may be worth only $15 billion overall, as opposed to Musk’s $44 billion purchase price. Fidelity has repeatedly marked down Twitter’s value.

New York CNN —Amid the US debt ceiling turmoil, a potential recession and the upcoming Fed meeting, Wall Street has a lot on its plate. Even as US lawmakers race to prevent a catastrophic default, the lingering effects of the regional banking crisis have not been completely extinguished. CEO Jamie Dimon said that his company’s emergency intervention had ended the immediate turmoil of the banking crisis. The SPDR Regional Banking ETF (KRE), which tracks a number of small and mid-sized bank stocks, is down about 3% so far this month and over 30% lower so far this year. Analysts are concerned that as rates get higher, the borrowing environment becomes tougher for regional banks, hurting their ability to lend.

New York CNN —The debt ceiling deal in Washington did not set off a celebration in the stock market. The Sierra Club called on Congress to reject the deal and pass a clean bill to raise the debt ceiling. Wall Street is also betting lending company SoFi will cash in from the debt ceiling deal because it calls for borrowers to start paying back federal student loans at the end of the summer. IRS funding cuts, defense spending intactMeanwhile, the debt ceiling deal would shift a total of $20 billion in IRS funding from fiscal 2024 and fiscal 2025 to be used in non-defense areas. The defense industry is also emerging largely unscathed from the debt ceiling battle, unlike in 2011 when Washington agreed to significant defense spending cuts.
