Best Theater of 2023

Jesse Green’s Best Theater | Unforgettable ExperiencesJESSE GREENYear of the DramedyIf 2023 was a tragedy in the world, on New York stages it was a dramedy year, highlighted not only by serious plays with great jokes, but also by flat-out comedies with dark underpinnings. Its residents included an unemployed man in his 50s, his barely-holding-on mother, a pregnant woman, two refugees — and us. Seated adjacent to the facility’s dingy common room, we became, in the playwright’s own staging, fellow residents. But if the others eyed us like we might steal a precious sandwich, we could blithely leave when the play was over. The New York Theater Workshop audience, too, learned a great deal, as the questions bedeviling so many relationships — the complexity of consent and the meaning of control — played out before us in this perfectly timed hot-button play.

He slapped her face and grabbed her hand violently, Mr. Perez said, adding that the driver would testify that after she got out of the car, Mr. Majors threw her “like a football” back inside. Throughout their relationship, Mr. Majors had shown a need to maintain control, Mr. Perez told the jurors, and in March, he had shown “no hesitation” in using physical force against Ms. Jabbari. The altercation resulted in a fracture to Ms. Jabbari’s middle finger on her right hand, as well as pain and swelling in her arm and right ear, Mr. Perez said. Mr. Perez cast the assault as the natural finale of a relationship that became abusive shortly after it began, two years before the assault. Mr. Majors, wearing a dark suit with a gilded Bible and a large binder on the table before him, spent much of Mr. Perez’s argument facing the front of the courtroom, his face blank.

Prosecutors painted Majors as a controlling partner, who once threatened suicide to manipulate. Defense said Jabbari threatened suicide, and the allegations were the result of being scorned. "He even threatened suicide to control her." In June of 2022, she went to a music festival in the UK with a friend where cellphone service was spotty, Perez told the jury. "He told her that she needed to comport herself in the way he needed her to be."

Hollywood box office sales slump in November
  + stars: | 2023-12-02 | by ( Eva Rothenberg | ) edition.cnn.com   time to read: +3 min
CNN —Movie theaters slumped into a “Slow-vember,” say industry analysts, as several of the season’s most anticipated movies drew underwhelming box office sales last month. Domestic theaters grossed about $553.6 million this November, a 12% decline from last year and still more than $400 million short of pre-pandemic levels, according to data from research firm Comscore. Between 2009 and 2019, Novembers were a reliably lucrative month and could be counted on to rake in nearly a billion dollars, owing in part to the long Thanksgiving weekend. It was also surpassed by “The Hunger Games,” which was the top movie over Thanksgiving weekend, grossing $42 million. December could see a similar slump, according to Robbins, given the “Ghostbusters” sequel has been delayed until next year and “Aquaman and the Lost Kingdom” will likely not live up to the first movie’s box office revenue.

Air traffic controllers, who have long endured staffing shortages, are facing increasingly strenuous schedules. The workloads have led some controllers to use alcohol, sleeping pills, and drugs to cope, per a Times report. "The nation absolutely needs more air traffic controllers, and growing the work force will result in better working conditions and more flexibility," she added. I saw hundreds of new films with a variety of plots and styles made on every imaginable scale and budget. The movies have ostensibly been at death’s door at least since the shift to sync sound, which isn’t to undersell the industry’s business woes. “Indiana Jones and the Dial of Destiny” was “cursed,” read one headline; “‘Mission: Impossible 7’ falls short of expectations,” ran another. The moaning in the trades gave way to klaxon horns when much of SAG-AFTRA went on strike on July 14. This year also reminded us that a mass audience will happily get out of the house for movies without superheroes.

An actor who was on the precipice of superstardom when Manhattan prosecutors accused him of assaulting his then-girlfriend is set to go on trial Wednesday, seeking to keep his career alive in an unusual proceeding that is expected to attract national attention. The actor, Jonathan Majors, was charged in March with misdemeanor assault and harassment. Prosecutors say he attacked the woman, Grace Jabbari, during a car ride to his home, slapping her face, grabbing her hand violently and, after she got out the vehicle, throwing her back into it. While it is unusual for a misdemeanor assault charge to go to trial — the vast majority of defendants plead guilty to avoid risking a harsher sentence — Mr. Majors is fighting to prove his innocence and to salvage his reputation in Hollywood. His lawyer, Priya Chaudhry, has been aggressive in defending him, calling Ms. Jabbari a liar who attacked Mr. Majors.

Iger, speaking in a wide-ranging interview with Andrew Ross Sorkin at The New York Times’ annual DealBook summit, acknowledged that Disney had “diluted” the caliber of films produced by Marvel. The company, he added, had “made too many” film sequels that had not been well received by audiences or critics. Francis deSouza, the former CEO of Illumina — a biotech company — said he would not seek re-election to the board. NEW YORK (AP) — The actor Jonathan Majors appeared in court in New York on Wednesday for the expected start of jury selection in a trial in which he is accused of injuring his then-girlfriend during an argument last spring. The 34-year-old actor entered a Manhattan courtroom alongside his current girlfriend, the actress Meagan Good, carrying a Bible and one of his signature coffee cups. Majors was arrested in March over a confrontation between the actor and Grace Jabbari, his girlfriend at the time, during a car ride in Manhattan. After the couple's driver stopped the car and the pair got out, Jabbari said Majors threw her back into the vehicle.
