Billionaire investor Stanley Druckenmiller said on Wednesday that his decision to sell out of Nvidia this year was a "big mistake." Druckenmiller's comments do not reflect Nvidia's 10-for-1 stock split, which went into effect in June. "It tripled in a year, and I thought the valuation was rich," Druckenmiller told Bloomberg. Druckenmiller told CNBC in May that Nvidia was "a little overhyped now, but underhyped long term." He added that he was introduced to Nvidia in 2022, when "I didn't even know how to spell it."

BEIJING — Chinese e-commerce giant Alibaba 's international arm on Wednesday launched an updated version of its artificial intelligence-powered translation tool that, it says, is better than products offered by Google, DeepL and ChatGPT. Alibaba's fast-growing international unit released the AI translation product as an update to one unveiled about a year ago, which it says already has 500,000 merchant users. Sellers based in one country can use the translation tool to create product pages in the language of the target market. Large language models power artificial intelligence applications such as OpenAI's ChatGPT, which can also translate text. Alibaba's translation tool is based on its own model called Qwen.

Part of the shift is demographic: Over the past few decades, the number of single women in America has skyrocketed. In 2023, there were 43 million single women living in the US, a 55% increase since 2000. Single women are older, more educated, and more financially independent than they were a generation earlier. Egypt and Bangladesh are among 22 countries deemed “safe” by Italy, a designation that prevents their nationals from qualifying for political asylum, with few exceptions. Under the protocol signed between Italy and Albania last year, those sent to Albania must not show signs of torture, illness or vulnerability or be part of nuclear families traveling together. Those brought directly to Italy instead would fall under EU regulations, which involve a lengthy asylum process. If they are denied asylum in Italy, they will then be deported back to their countries of origin at Italy’s expense. More than 1 million migrants have made it to Italy by sea from North African ports since 2014, according to Italian government statistics and UNHCR.

Duolingo CEO Luis von Ahn talked about his data-driven approach to "founder mode." A debate over founder mode was recently sparked by Paul Graham's essay advocating hands-on leadership. AdvertisementAmid the wider debate in Silicon Valley about how a CEO should run their company, Duolingo's chief executive is siding with a data-driven approach to founder mode. "Yes, I am in that mode, but we have a number of people who could probably play that role as well," von Ahn said when asked about founder mode. While this my-way-or-the-highway approach feels very indicative of founder mode, arguments rarely happen between the three executives, von Ahn said in the interview.

Those working-class White women loom as a critical, potentially even decisive, factor in Trump’s third White House bid. But while White women with a college degree have trended toward the Democrats in the presidential campaigns since then, the White women without a college degree have moved sharply in the opposite direction. She acknowledges that Trump’s alarms have resonated among working-class White women, especially older ones. Duolingo's CEO said being in the office is key for brainstorming. In an interview on The Verge's "Decoder" podcast, Luis von Ahn said that employees must come into the office three days a week. "Most of what we do is creative stuff," von Ahn told "Decoder." While RTO mandates have proved massively unpopular elsewhere, von Ahn said the transition at Duolingo was smooth because the company consistently managed expectations. When it first went remote, von Ahn said he told employees — and new hires — that they would eventually be going back to the office.

As has been the case for previous Woodward books, those who don’t come out well from his reporting publicly dismiss it. Woodward notes that neither Biden nor Trump spoke to him for this book, but he still got great access. It’s clear from a close reading of “War” that almost every top national security official in the Biden administration spoke with him. The Biden administration has halted the shipment of massive 2,000-pound bombs to Israel, but otherwise, the large flow of American weapons to the Jewish state continues. Coats told Woodward, “It’s still a mystery to me how he deals with Putin and what he says to Putin.

We're about to enter the Digital Dark Ages

Without laborious renaming, everything behind those links — billions of them, a decade of digital content — will become inaccessible. We're about to enter the Digital Dark Ages. The Department of Veterans Affairs is legally required to preserve all medical records for 75 years after the death of a vet — but it's having problems, in part because of a balky digital records system. "Over the long term, you can't preserve a digital object in its original form," says Manoff, the former MIT librarian. The Dark Ages, as historians used to call the early centuries of medieval Europe, lasted for 500 years.

There's good reason to adopt a skills-first strategy: Hiring managers who practice skills-first hiring find it twice as easy to find qualified candidates than hiring managers who do not. But the advancement of generative AI has the potential to change that. To use AI effectively for skills-first hiring, talent professionals must understand how models have been developed and trained and audit and monitor those models for bias. Indeed's Smart Sourcing generative AI provides an explanation of the candidate's potential overlapping qualifications with the employer's job description. As crucial as AI will be to skills-first hiring, talent acquisition, and management always starts and end with humans.

An Orange County, California, man has been arrested in connection with acts of vandalism in which anti-Asian slurs that were spray-painted over campaign signs for Democratic congressional candidate Dave Min, who’s Korean American. It comes after reports of two separate incidents in which signs were spray-painted with an anti-Korean derogatory term. A video documenting the vandalism, that was posted on the Democratic candidate’s social media, shows the hate speech, written in silver paint, across a row of signs. Police said they first responded to a report of vandalism last Tuesday, when they found Min signs defaced with the offensive language. “The Huntington Beach Police Department takes vandalism seriously, particularly when it involves hate speech,” the police said in a news release last week.
