Weigh 'tax gain harvesting'Despite recent dips, many long-time crypto investors could have significant gains. Long-term capital gains rates apply to assets owned for more than one year. Of course, you'll need to weigh the tax consequences of boosting your adjusted gross income with crypto gains, which can impact other tax breaks. Consider the crypto wash sale 'loophole'If you're sitting on crypto losses, you could consider tax-loss harvesting, which allows you to offset other investing profits. Although tax-loss harvesting often happens at year-end, it's better to harvest crypto losses over time because "those losses may no longer exist" by year-end, Gordon explained.

British oil giant BP on Tuesday reported stronger-than-expected net profit for the second quarter and raised its dividend despite previously warning of significantly lower refining margins. The oil and gas major posted underlying replacement cost profit, used as a proxy for net profit, of $2.8 billion for the second quarter. BP reported net profit of $2.7 billion for the first three months of the year and $2.6 billion for the second quarter of 2023. BP said earlier in the month that weak refining margins and lower oil trading results would likely dent the firm's second-quarter results by as much as $700 million. BP's net debt stood at $22.6 billion at the end of the second quarter, down from $23.7 billion compared to the same period last year.

Kate Douglass, a statistics graduate student and the second-fastest swimmer in the world this year in two Olympic swimming events, has always been good with numbers. But before she enrolled at the University of Virginia, she never considered that swimming itself was a math problem that she could try to solve. That changed when she realized the concepts she was studying in the classroom could be used in her sport. These days, Douglass often gets into the pool while wearing a belt that holds an accelerometer, the same device found in smartphones and fitness watches. So far, so good: On Saturday, she began a busy Olympics schedule by winning a silver medal in the 4x100 freestyle relay.

After a challenging second quarter, McDonald's executives told restaurant operators and analysts they are refocusing on how to recapture consumers with deals, as they pushed for an extension of the its $5 value meal platform. "Reversing the narrative and re-establishing our position as the leader on value and affordability is possible, but it cannot be done overnight," he wrote. Erlinger also acknowledged areas where the company was "falling short" in the U.S. this quarter. But he added that trial rates for the value meal launch were highest among low-income consumers, and sentiment around McDonald's value has started to improve. The memo said the majority of locations will extend through August, or plan to vote on whether to do so.

McDonald's executives acknowledged Monday that diners consider the company's prices too high as lower-income consumers balk after years of high inflation. During the company's second-quarter earnings call Monday, executives said they are taking a "forensic approach" to evaluating prices and trying to create value. We are working to fix that with pace," McDonald's CEO Chris Kempczinski said on the company's earnings call. The offer also began to increase guest count growth, but it has not yet translated into sales increases, company executives said on the call. The $5 value meal was rolled out only days before the second quarter ended.

“We’re a long way from saying this, but if there is life on Venus producing phosphine, we have no idea why it’s producing it. So finding them in the atmosphere of Venus is interesting on that basis as well. But further analysis of that data by Clements’ team revealed weak traces of the molecule, reinforcing the theory. “To date, our analyses remain unchallenged in the literature,” said Mogul, who was not involved in the research of Clements’ team. While detecting phosphine and ammonia in Venus’ clouds is exciting, it is just the beginning of a longer journey to unravel the mysteries of that planet’s atmosphere, he said.

Remembering the Firebrand Irish Novelist Edna O’Brien

Decades before Elena Ferrante’s Neapolitan novels, the Irish writer Edna O’Brien — who died at 93 on July 27 — provided her own searing portraits of an oppressive, violent society seen through the prism of female friendship. When we first meet them in 1960’s “The Country Girls,” Kate and Baba are teenagers, dreaming of a future beyond the confines of their rural Irish village and strict convent school. Its sequels — “Girl With Green Eyes” (1962), and the ironically-titled “Girls in Their Married Bliss” (1964) — follow them through their first taste of womanhood in Dublin, then to London, where they struggle to reconcile their romantic fantasies with the frustrations of real marital life. O’Brien was 29 when “The Country Girls” was published, living with two young sons and her then-husband, the writer Ernest Gébler, in a small house in a bleak south London suburb to which they’d moved, two years earlier, from Ireland. The novel took her only three weeks to write, the words having “tumbled out,” as she recalled in her 2012 memoir, “Country Girl,” “like the oats on threshing day that tumble down the shaft, the hard pellets of oats funneled into bags and the chaff flying everywhere, getting into the men’s eyes and their having to shout to be heard above the noise of the machine.”Although tame by today’s social mores, and praised on its publication by the English press, “The Country Girls” — with its candid portrayal of female sexuality and extramarital romance — sent shock waves through Ireland, where it was denounced by the church and banned by the Irish censorship board as “indecent.” Copies were even publicly burned.

CNN —A routine part of the job for Southwest Airlines flight attendants is turning into a dangerous mess as a searing summer heat and the airline’s beverage management practices have made soda cans volatile mid-flight. There were more than 100 reports of soda cans exploding on flights in June, Southwest flight attendant union president Bill Bernal told CNN, some of which have injured flight attendants. Southwest Airlines wouldn’t comment on the number of incidents and injuries or their nature, but confirmed to CNN the issue is occurring. “Both the short term and long term fixes are actual engineered fixes that should eventually all but eradicate the exploding can issue at Southwest Airlines,” Bernal said. Soda cans are engineered and designed to handle reaching a pressure level between three to six times the can’s normal pressure, according to Biberdorf.

What the LIFT Act would mean todaySince the LIFT Act was first proposed in 2018, the cost of living has only sky-rocketed, hitting working-class Americans especially hard. But a tax credit like LIFT would also be extremely costly, according to Tax Policy Center estimates from 2018 and 2019. However, funding such a tax credit now could be tough amid growing concerns over the federal budget deficit. Focus on the child tax creditLIFT was first proposed years before Congress temporarily expanded the child tax credit during the Covid-19 pandemic, which could now be a bigger priority, experts say. The American Rescue Plan boosted the child tax credit to $3,000 from $2,000, with an extra $600 for children under age 6 for 2021, and families received up to half upfront via monthly payments.

Over the years, whenever the United States Secret Service’s lack of resources has been an issue, agents invoke a tongue-in-cheek motto: We do more with less. It’s a sentiment that might no longer apply. An assassination attempt on former President Donald J. Trump at a campaign rally on July 13 in Butler, Pa., has exposed weaknesses in the Secret Service’s make-do approach to security for the country’s highest elected officials, their families, and visiting foreign leaders. Kimberly A. Cheatle, the then-Secret Service director, told a congressional committee on Monday that the shooting — which left the former president’s ear bloodied and injured three other spectators, one fatally — “is the most significant operational failure at the Secret Service in decades.” She resigned the day after the hearing. The agency’s security lapses in Butler have spurred numerous investigations and prompted debate as to whether the Secret Service, which is operating with its largest-ever budget, has adequate resources to fulfill its critical mandate and is using its funds in the most effective manner.

Total U.S. money market funds hovered near a record of $6.15 trillion as of July 17, with $2.48 trillion in funds for retail investors, according to Investment Company Institute data. CNN —When she leaves Barbie Land for the real world, Barbie must keep up with her regular health maintenance, which includes seeing her gynecologist. Those examples and others inspired the researchers to look into the “Barbie” effect on interest in women’s reproductive health. But the authors noted that an increase in seeking gynecologic care may not be accurately captured in search trends. It’s possible that the searches were from people who don’t need gynecologic care, the authors note in the study. “I feel like (the scene) starts the conversation — anything that starts the conversation about reproductive health tends to cause folks to want to explore that and go in and take a look at what they should be doing about their own health,” Irobunda said.
