People take part in a rally to demand South Korean President Yoon Suk Yeol's removal from power, in Seoul, South Korea, December 4, 2024. South Korean lawmakers on Wednesday called for the impeachment of President Yoon Suk Yeol after he declared martial law only to reverse the move hours later, triggering the biggest political crisis in decades in Asia's fourth-largest economy. Yoon told the nation in a TV address that martial law was needed to defend the country from nuclear-armed North Korea and pro-North anti-state forces, and protect its free constitutional order, although he cited no specific threats. The military said activities by parliament and political parties would be banned, and that media and publishers would be under the control of the martial law command. But within hours of the declaration, South Korea's parliament, with 190 of its 300 members present, unanimously passed a motion requiring martial law be lifted, including all 18 members present from Yoon's party.

CNN —Iran’s parliament has enacted a harsh new modesty law, significantly tightening existing dress restrictions that have already fueled nationwide protests and posed a serious challenge to regime stability. “In my opinion the hijab law, which I have to implement, is vague. It defines improper dress in various ways, ranging from nudity and dressing immodestly to wearing the hijab incorrectly. The law also introduces a system of fines and restrictions with financial penalties, even for initial offenses. While the harsher penalties have caused concern for Iranians, a particularly controversial aspect of the legislation is expanded surveillance.

Chad Chronister, President-elect Donald Trump's selection to lead the Drug Enforcement Administration, said Tuesday that he would withdraw from consideration for the post. "Over the past several days, as the gravity of this very important responsibility set in, I’ve concluded that I must respectfully withdraw from consideration." Trump had tapped Chronister to be DEA administrator, a role within the Department of Justice that requires Senate confirmation, over the weekend. While Scott called Chronister an "incredible pick," some Republicans bristled at his selection for the top DEA role and welcomed his withdrawal. In November, Gaetz, R-Fla. withdrew his name from consideration to serve as attorney general amid sexual misconduct allegations, which he denied.

In today’s edition, national political correspondent explains why Republicans may not be able to bank on Donald Trump's coalition moving forward. The GOP’s post-election challenge: Turning Trump voters into full-fledged RepublicansBy Steve KornackiEven with their success, this election revealed a challenge for Republicans going forward: The “Trump coalition” and the “GOP coalition” are not quite the same. That was in Maine in 2020, when voters re-elected Republican Sen. Susan Collins while backing Democrat Joe Biden for president. The first involves voters who were motivated to turn out for Trump, but then skipped all of the other races on the ballot. The other factor the GOP will need to address involves Democratic defectors — traditionally Democratic voters who have essentially made an exception for Trump.

Short bursts of movement throughout the day — no matter how small — can help the heart, especially for women, research published Tuesday found. On average, men in the study did 11 short bursts of vigorous activity during the day, some which lasted less than a minute, and women did about nine. Vigorous activity meant it was high intensity, said Emmanuel Stamatakis, a professor of physical activity, lifestyle and population health at the University of Sydney, who led the study. Women who got just under 3.5 minutes of vigorous movement a day, however, were found to have a 45% lower risk of any of the heart problems than women who didn’t log any vigorous movement throughout the day. Getting about 5.5 minutes of vigorous movement per day reduced their risk of a major heart problem by 16%.

The 88-year-old doctor accused of sexually assaulting Indiana University basketball players in the 1990s will be deposed Wednesday after a judge ruled he was competent to be questioned about the allegations. They alleged that their coaches and trainers were aware that Bomba was subjecting basketball players to unnecessary prostate examinations and did nothing to stop him. Indiana University is represented by the Indianapolis-based Barnes & Thornburg law firm, university spokesperson Mark Bode wrote in an email. Bomba had played football for Indiana University and was nicknamed “Frankenstein” by coaches and players “due to the large size of his hands and fingers,” the lawsuit added. The accusations that the university turned a blind eye to allegations that a team doctor was sexually abusing players echo a scandal involving a team doctor at a rival school.

WASHINGTON — President-elect Donald Trump’s pick to lead the Defense Department, Pete Hegseth, is in peril as Senate Republicans grow increasingly concerned over allegations of drinking and reports about his treatment of women. Given Republicans' slim Senate majority in the next Congress, Hegseth, a former Fox News host, can afford to lose only three GOP votes, assuming all Democrats vote against him. Hegseth did not respond when he was asked for comment on those allegations Tuesday evening at the Capitol. Another Trump pick to fill out his Cabinet dropped out of contention last month amid opposition from Senate Republicans. Several Republican senators have continued to downplay the allegations, saying they support Trump’s prerogative to pick his own Cabinet.

A search and rescue effort was underway in Pennsylvania on Tuesday after a grandmother searching for her cat appears to have plunged into a sinkhole that authorities said was at least 30 feet deep. An 8-year-old boy has died after a statue fell on him outside the luxury Arizona Biltmore hotel, the Phoenix Police Department said. The boy's death was announced Monday, five days after he was struck in the head by the statue and hospitalized. Investigators were still trying to determine Tuesday why the statue came apart and how the boy came to be hit by it, but they ruled out foul play, police said. A dozen Moscow clubgoers were found guilty of “petty hooliganism” and detained following anti-LGBTQ "propaganda" raids by Russian security forces, according to Russian court documents and local news reports. The raids were executed exactly a year after Russia’s Supreme Court ruled that LGBTQ activists and the LGBTQ “movement” should be designated as extremists. Clubgoers who were not brought into custody were allowed to leave Arma roughly three hours after the raid began, according to Baza. Notably, the Russian government passed legislation in 2013 known as the “gay propaganda law,” making it illegal “to spread information about nontraditional sexual behavior” to minors. The law was expanded to apply to adults, effectively banning public symbols or gestures of “nontraditional sexual relations.” Russians who violate the so-called propaganda law could face up to 400,000 rubles ($6,500) in fines.

Amid an unprecedented cyberattack on telecommunications companies such as AT&T and Verizon, U.S. officials have recommended that Americans use encrypted messaging apps to ensure their communications stay hidden from foreign hackers. CALEA systems can include classified court orders from the Foreign Intelligence Surveillance Court, which processes some U.S. intelligence court orders. The FBI official declined to say if any classified material was accessed. But the FBI has also supported forms of encryption that do allow for some law enforcement access in certain circumstances. Certainly the way they went about it was very, very specific about the telcos and the ISPs, but it fits into the cyber espionage bucket,” the FBI official said.

Cleveland Browns quarterback Jameis Winston has been a highlight machine since taking over the starting job on Oct. 27 — both good and bad. That was never more true than Monday night, when Winston threw for 497 yards and four touchdowns in a 41-32 loss to the Denver Broncos. That would have been a great stat line, except Winston also threw three interceptions — including two pick-sixes. In true Winston fashion, immediately following Bonitto’s score, he led an 11-play drive in under 90 seconds for a touchdown. But one play after converting a 3rd-and-12, Ja'Quan McMillan intercepted Winston for a 44-yard score that gave Denver a 41-32 lead.
