Meta is teaming up with Snapchat and TikTok as part of a new initiative to prevent content featuring suicide or self-harm from spreading across the social media platforms, Meta said Thursday in a blog post. Under Thrive, Meta will identify content that features suicidal themes or self-harm and flag that content to TikTok and Snapchat so they can also investigate if the same or similar content has been posted to those apps. When content featuring suicide or self-harm is identified on a Meta platform, it will be assigned a number known as a “hash,” according to the spokesperson. Social media platforms, including Meta, TikTok and Snapchat, have long been criticized for not doing more to moderate content that teens consume, including video and images of self-harm. In its blog post Thursday, Meta said that it removed 12 million pieces of content featuring suicide and self-harm from Facebook and Instagram from April to June.

The Missouri Supreme Court ruled Tuesday that an amendment that would enshrine abortion access in the state's constitution can appear on the general election ballot. A majority of the state Supreme Court said that a previous judgment by a circuit court is reversed, directing Missouri Secretary of State John Ashcroft to inform local election officials to place Amendment 3 on the state's Nov. 5 ballot. So it is noteworthy that Democratic and Republican leaders both appear to want to establish a sovereign wealth fund to help the United States pay for stuff. Saudi Arabia's Public Investment Fund, which manages about $925 billion in assets, reported a $36.8 billion profit for 2023, according to Reuters. This isn't the first time Washington has toyed with the idea of a sovereign wealth fund. Last March, a group of bipartisan lawmakers led by Sen. Angus King and Sen. Bill Cassidy began discussing a sovereign wealth fund to pay for Social Security. The White House's interest in a sovereign wealth fund stems partly from its desire to compete with China, which has multiple state-owned funds itself.

Not everyone who attempts suicide has a mental health conditionOne of many common myths about suicide is that only people with mental health conditions have suicidal thoughts or attempt suicide. Describing a suicide attempt as “successful” is also problematic, as taking one’s life is not a positive achievement. “Failed suicide attempt” can suggest that surviving isn’t the best outcome or that there’s something lacking in the character or willpower of the attempter. Given these factors, when referring to suicide, appropriate language includes “died by suicide,” “fatal suicide attempt,” “killed herself” or “took his own life,” experts said. Acceptable shorthand ways to communicate not dying from an attempt include “nonfatal suicide attempt” or simply “suicide attempt.”Using more compassionate language to discuss suicide can also improve empathy and strategies for reducing suicide risk, experts said.
