Why Trump Is Right About Tariffs
  + stars: | 2023-10-27 | by ( Oren Cass | ) www.wsj.com   time to read: +1 min
President Donald Trump at a Whirlpool manufacturing facility in Ohio, Aug. 2020. Photo: Scott Olson/Getty ImagesEconomists have reacted poorly to Donald Trump’s recent proposal for a 10% tariff on all imports. After all, tax revenue is necessary to provide public services, and tariffs have long proved an effective way to collect it. In 1789, the first law in the first Congress—advocated by Alexander Hamilton, introduced by James Madison and signed by George Washington on the Fourth of July—established a tariff not unlike Trump’s. For much of the nation’s history, while growing from colonial backwater to continent-spanning industrial colossus, the U.S. imposed some of the world’s highest tariffs, which were the primary means of funding the federal government.

MEXICO CITY, Oct 26 (Reuters) - Lewis Hamilton claimed on Thursday that more cars than his Mercedes and Charles Leclerc's Ferrari were illegal at the U.S. Grand Prix in Austin and called for a fairer system of post-race checks. Both teams accepted their punishment and blamed the sprint format, with only one practice session, and particularly bumpy track. Only four of the 15 cars that finished the race were checked for such a breach, however. "I have heard from different sources that there were many cars that had not been tested and were also illegal," Hamilton told reporters ahead of this weekend's race in Mexico City. "It's unlikely two cars (from the same team) are that different, so if one car is illegal, there is a high chance that the other car is," said the Briton.

The Mexican, second in a championship already won by Verstappen for the third year running, emphasised the slogan of a local #racepect campaign in saying what happened on track must stay on track. "Whatever happens on track should always stay there and that's the best message we as a country want to give to the rest of the world." "Checo (Perez) and I have got on very well, I don't think there is a rivalry. Verstappen has won four of the last five Mexican Grands Prix while the country is still waiting for its first home winner. Mexican Grand Prix organisers condemned the comments at the time and called for "a more respectful and united Formula One community, encouraging healthy competition both on and off the track."

Park is one of more than 100 family members who say the authorities have done little to hold those responsible to account. Sergio Perez was still in Texas when he called the Mexico City Grand Prix his most important race weekend of the season. And while Perez has been part Red Bull's crushing constructor's championship, Verstappen is so dominant that he would have Red Bull in first place all by himself. His photo adorns just about everything in Mexico City this week, from race promotional billboards, television commercials and ads for car insurance and breakfast oats. “I don't think Max is going to get the warmest reception in Mexico,” Red Bull team principal Christian Horner said this week. “I want Mexico to come out to support the whole Oracle Red Bull Racing Team, not just me,” he said.

Perez, with 'Never Give Up' prominent on a specially-designed helmet for the occasion, remains positive despite a run of poor form. Mercedes to move on from Austin blow with 'sunny optimism'
  + stars: | 2023-10-25 | by ( ) www.reuters.com   time to read: +2 min
Oct 25 (Reuters) - Mercedes expect their upgraded car to perform strongly in the final four races of the Formula One season despite the blow of having Lewis Hamilton disqualified from second place in Texas last Sunday. Allison said that feeling would soon be replaced by "a sunny optimism of knowing that the car looked bright on this upgrade package and we've got four more races to show what we can do with it". Allison said Austin, despite the skid plate problem, had actually been a "cast-iron vote of confidence in favour of what we put on the car". When we had done our setup we checked the plank and everything all looked fine, untouched after the FP1 running. We were illegal so clearly we should have had our car set a little bit higher up to give ourselves a little bit more margin."

The whales were buoyed by a strong birthing year in 2021, when 18 calves were born into the population, the consortium said. However, consortium members cautioned that the high mortality faced by the whales from collisions and entanglement remains an unsustainable burden. Scientists say one reason the whales are now in decline has to do with warming oceans and climate change. Numerous lobster fishermen have opposed proposed fishing restrictions they fear would put them out of business rather than help whales. The right whale consortium said sublethal injuries to whales from collisions and fishing gear are also a major concern for the remaining population.

The last U.S. driver before the 22-year-old Florida native to score in a grand prix was Michael Andretti with McLaren in 1993. "It’s amazing to score my first point in F1 on home turf after the challenging weekend I’ve had," said Sargeant, who failed to finish the previous race in Qatar after suffering exhaustion in the heat. The team are seventh out of 10 in the constructors' standings, 10 points clear of eighth-placed Alfa Romeo with four races remaining. His identification makes Livingston the ninth presumed victim of Baumeister to be identified by investigators from among roughly 10,000 charred bones and bone fragments that were found at Baumeister’s sprawling property, Jellison said. He said investigators believe the bones and fragments could represent the remains of at least 25 people. During the original investigation in the 1990s, 11 human DNA samples were extracted from bones and bone fragments. Eight of those people, all young men, were identified and matched to DNA samples, with Livingston now the ninth to be identified, Jellison said. So far, more than 30 families have provided DNA samples, and Jellison hopes other families will submit additional samples.

Rite Aid was expected to close stores as part of its bankruptcy.
