Athens, Greece CNN —The Greek parliament on Thursday passed a law legalizing same-sex marriage, in a landmark victory for human rights in Greece and making it the first majority Orthodox Christian country to establish marriage equality for all. Now, same-sex parents can both be recognized as legal parents to their children. A recent poll carried out by Metron Analysis showed that although 62% of respondents said they were in favor of same-sex marriage, 69% were against same-sex parenthood. The same-sex marriage bill has drawn the wrath of the influential Greek Orthodox Church to which more than 80% of the population belong. All three voted against the same-sex marriage law, and the legislation could still push some angry voters to the right ahead of European elections in June.

NEW YORK (AP) — For five years, a New York City man managed to live rent-free in a landmark Manhattan hotel by exploiting an obscure local housing law. But prosecutors this week said Mickey Barreto went too far when he filed paperwork claiming ownership of the entire New Yorker Hotel building — and tried to charge another tenant rent. “As alleged, Mickey Barreto repeatedly and fraudulently claimed ownership of one of the City’s most iconic landmarks, the New Yorker Hotel,” said Manhattan District Attorney Alvin Bragg. The Unification Church sued Barreto in 2019 over the deed claim, including his representations on LinkedIn as the building's owner. “And I never made a penny out of this.”Barreto said his legal wrangling is activism aimed at denying profits to the Unification Church.

CNN —New York City is suing a handful of social media networks, alleging their platforms’ designs exploit young users’ mental health and cost the city $100 million in related health programs and services each year. A growing number of families have sued social media companies, along with US states and municipalities, over the alleged impact on the mental health of their children. The city also released a social media action plan that highlights how it plans to hold social media companies accountable, provide education and support to young people and families, and study the long-term impacts of social media on youth. Last month, Mayor Adams called social media a “public health hazard” and an “environmental toxin” during his State of the City address. The lawsuit also builds on last year’s Surgeon General warning that declared social media a “profound risk of harm” for kids.

Ukraine says it sunk another Russian naval ship in the Black Sea. Ukraine's military released video that appears to show sea drones attacking the landing craft. AdvertisementIf confirmed, the sinking would be another notch in Ukraine's impressive score sheet against Russia's Black Sea Fleet. In December, the UK's defense minister, Grant Shapps, said that Ukraine has destroyed some 20% of Russia's Black Sea Fleet. Following this latest claimed attack, Ukraine's armed forces told CNN that it had destroyed a third of Russia's Black Sea Fleet.

Ukraine has virtually no navy of its own, but technological innovation, audacity and Russian incompetence have given it the upper hand in much of the Black Sea. Rather than fold, the Ukrainians declared a unilateral “Black Sea Humanitarian Corridor” for merchant shipping and stepped up its use of maritime drones and missile attacks against Russia’s Black Sea fleet. One-third of the Black Sea fleet has been disabled or destroyed, and the remaining ships rarely venture into the western half of the sea. In August, Russia withdrew some of the Black Sea fleet from its headquarters in Sevastopol to relatively safer ports on the Russian coast. Russia is unlikely to be able to tilt the balance in the Black Sea back in its favor.

As Nolan writes in “The Hammer,” his lively account of the current landscape of American labor organizing, “It was reminiscent of Dr. Evil in ‘Austin Powers’ demanding as his ransom request for the entire world, ‘One million dollars!’”Nolan’s book joins the ranks of Steven Greenhouse’s “Beaten Down, Worked Up” and Jane McAlevey’s “A Collective Bargain” in making a rousing case for a robust labor movement. “The Hammer” aims to show that unions are the best way to combat economic inequality, give disenfranchised people genuine political power and counter the allure of the far right among the working class. What would such an announcement look like? “Perhaps every worker will emerge from the office and fire guns in the air,” Nolan muses, “until the smoke wafts over A.F.L.-C.I.O.

Those who knew the woman who opened fire on Sunday with an AR-15 rifle inside Lakewood Church in Houston said the warning signs had been flashing, off and on, for years. Her neighbors said the woman, Genesse Ivonne Moreno, sometimes displayed aggressive behavior that frightened them. She directed antisemitic rants at her Jewish in-laws during a protracted and bitter divorce and custody dispute. At one point in the summer of 2022, her angry outbursts became so vitriolic that the police in Conroe, Texas, were asked to check on the well-being of her young son. The officers found firearms in the home but did not remove them, according to Rabbi Walli Carranza, the boy’s paternal grandmother, who had requested the welfare check.

AUGUSTA, Maine (AP) — The independent commission investigating the deadliest shooting in Maine history was granted subpoena power to compel witnesses to testify or produce documents Tuesday. The commission said it's pleased that the Army will make individuals available to testify, a spokesperson said. Evidence of Card's mental health struggles had surfaced months before the shooting. In May, relatives warned police that Card had grown paranoid, and they expressed concern about his access to guns. Then in September, a fellow reservist warned of a mass shooting.

Read previewAs the second anniversary of Russia's unprovoked invasion approaches, the situation is beginning to look bleak for Ukraine. But the offensive failed to achieve a breakthrough, and Ukraine is now seeing crucial support from its allies bleed away. Ukraine has previously warned it may not be able to successfully defend itself against Russia without US help. The Senate on Tuesday passed a $95 billion emergency defense aid bill that could help Ukraine. According to reports, Ukraine is struggling to fight off Russian attacks, particularly around the city of Avdiivka, in Donetsk, east Ukraine.

Al-Shifa, Israeli officials have argued, is an example of Hamas’s willingness to use hospitals as cover and turn civilians into human shields. The portion of the tunnel visible in the Israeli military video is at least 350 feet long. But beyond accusing the Israeli military of planting evidence at hospitals, Hamas and Gazan officials have not directly refuted the evidence presented by Israel. The Israeli military declined to provide additional imagery to support its assertion that this was a tunnel entryway or part of a tunnel complex. Concrete sections of the Al-Shifa tunnel are visible in this still image from the video released by the Israeli military.

(AP) — Nebraska would become one of the last Republican-led states to enact a so-called “stand your ground” law under a bill presented to a legislative committee on Thursday. Thirty-eight states — including all six of Nebraska's neighboring states — have stand your ground laws. The Nebraska bill comes at a time when GOP-led state legislatures across the country are embracing bills expanding gun rights. Last year, Nebraska lawmakers passed a bill allowing residents to carry concealed guns without a permit. Under the so-called “constitutional carry” law, people can carry guns hidden in their clothing or vehicle without having to pay for a government permit or take a gun safety course.

According to a draft document seen by Reuters, the Hamas counterproposal envisions three phases lasting 45 days each. The proposal would see militants exchange remaining Israeli hostages they captured on Oct. 7 for Palestinian prisoners. The reconstruction of Gaza would begin, Israeli forces would withdraw completely, and bodies and remains would be exchanged. By the end of the third phase, Hamas would expect the sides to have reached agreement on an end to the war. Israel began its military offensive in Gaza after militants from Hamas-ruled Gaza killed 1,200 people and took 253 hostages in southern Israel on Oct. 7.

But there was always the prospect of more American aid on the horizon. That support was critical, analysts and leaders in Kyiv say. The United States has provided about half of the foreign military assistance to Ukraine’s arsenal, roughly $47 billion. But this week leaders in Kyiv have waited anxiously to see if that lifeline will come to an end, as a stalemate between lawmakers in the United States Congress threatens to end, for now, American support for the war against Russia. A measure that would allow American arms to flow to Ukraine, Israel and Taiwan and fund border security was defeated in a Senate vote on Wednesday amid growing Republican opposition and deep division on Capitol Hill.
