Preference for environmental, social, and governance — or ESG investing plummeted in 2023 among millennials and Gen Z. The survey examined the support for environmental, social, and governance (ESG) issues and investing across different age groups. Investments receive an ESG rating, and ESG investors pick assets that align with their views on these subjects. Gary Gensler, chairman of the US Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC), during an interview in Washington, DC, US, on Thursday, July 27, 2023. Gensler was faced with the difficult task of explaining why the SEC has reversed its position on bitcoin ETFs. Circuit held that the commission failed to adequately explain its reasoning when it turned down Grayscale's proposed bitcoin ETF. In large part, the conflicts are based on his claim that most crypto assets are securities that come under the purview of the SEC. While we approved the listing and trading of certain spot bitcoin ETP shares today, we did not approve or endorse bitcoin."

One company helping early-stage startups connect with influencers for capital and marketing services is the Utah-based creator incubator Spacestation. "Influencer marketing is an incredible channel, but it can also be quite expensive for an early-stage company. So, they're getting our investment, but then they're also getting direct access to these creator investors." "This should not be the only investment kind of activity that anybody does, including creators," Holladay added. Where it makes sense, our creator investors help minimize that risk by taking an active role in driving brand growth.

While much of Europe's startup ecosystem has been hobbled by the rocky macroeconomic environment and soaring interest rates, climate tech has continued to lure funds from venture capitalists. Many climate tech companies work with hardware, meaning debt financing is also an attractive non-dilutive option for working capital between funding rounds. Global private market equity and grant funding for climate tech startups is actually down – it slid 40% to $65 billion in the 12 months ending September 30, according to PwC. Some smaller climate tech companies have made cuts, including vertical farming company InFarm, which retreated from Europe and was declared bankrupt in the Netherlands. Generally, however, layoffs have been a boon for climate as big tech talent has moved into or launched climate tech startups.

Moody’s warns it may downgrade China

The lowering of its outlook does not automatically mean the ratings agency will downgrade China’s creditworthiness, but it increases the chances. Analysts say the property downturn is likely to drag on, hobbling China’s growth prospects for years. Slower growth, weaker demographicsMoody’s expects China’s annual economic growth rate to slow to 4% in both 2024 and 2025, and average 3.8% a year from 2026 to 2030. “The affirmation of the A1 rating reflects China’s financial and institutional resources to manage the transition in an orderly fashion,” the agency said. “Its economy’s vast size and robust, albeit slowing, potential growth rate, support its high shock-absorption capacity.”China’s Finance Ministry said Tuesday it was “disappointed” with Moody’s decision to downgrade the country’s credit outlook.

For its biggest banks, however, there's a hitch: a generation of professional front-line staff have little experience with rising interest rates. The 38 members, which include credit dealers and data scientists, work to improve coordination between retail and wholesale divisions, as higher rates are expected to fuel trading activities. Still, if higher rates are new to most bankers, so they are for their clients, who have for years enjoyed rock bottom rates in Japan. "Almost no front-line bankers have experienced short-term rates above 0.5% as Japan last saw such rates in the 1990s," he said. "I think there are a lot of scepticism among front-line bankers over whether they can really increase their lending rates."

As a financial planner, I have clients asking about investing in real estate on a regular basis. Real estate shouldn't be seen as passive income — it takes a lot of work and a lot of risk. But most people who are curious about investing in real estate have a lot of false assumptions and little knowledge or experience. Start Investing in Real Estate without Getting a Mortgage Fundrise is one of the best real estate investing apps for non-accredited investors looking to make long-term investments in real estate. According to data firm Preqin, only one emerging markets greenfield renewables fund has raised more than Copenhagen wants to amass, although the 2014 $3.26 billion Guangzhou City Development Industry Fund is focused on China. While a deal to phase out fossil fuels has been hard to agree, more than 60 countries have backed a global agreement to triple renewable energy this decade. The growth in demand for electricity is enormous," he told Reuters, adding that renewable energy was often the cheapest energy source. Founded in 2012, Denmark's Copenhagen manages 26 billion euros ($28.3 billion) of assets and runs 12 funds. It comes as the US aims to break China's stranglehold over the global electric battery supply chain. Key US automakers like Tesla and Ford are still using Chinese technology in their electric cars. AdvertisementChina is well and truly winning the EV race — and now the White House has unveiled new rules to try and keep Chinese companies out of the US electric car market. The new restrictions could be a headache for US auto manufacturers, which have traditionally relied on China for their battery technology . The American EV market, meanwhile, has stuttered in recent months , with legacy automakers slashing investment and cutting back targets.

John Kerry, President Joe Biden's climate envoy, is expected to announce at COP28 a global strategy in nuclear fusion. If it is produced using renewables like wind or solar power, as opposed to fossil fuel generated power, it is called green hydrogen. Governments and companies think green hydrogen could be a way to clean up hard-to-decarbonize industries like steel and cement-making and other industrial manufacturing. PwC said technologies like green hydrogen and reducing food waste have relatively high emissions reduction potential, but are receiving a small share of start-up investment. In 2023, green hydrogen got 3.9% of global climate-tech venture funding, while food waste got 0.7%, it said.

Finance executives, consultants and headhunters interviewed by Reuters predict subdued deal flows, modest bonuses for most and heavy job cuts in 2024. "2023 will ultimately be one of the lowest corporate finance fee pools in modern history," said Fabrizio Campelli, head of Corporate Bank and Investment Bank at Deutsche Bank. JOB CUTSBanks have already turned to cost cuts to try to weather the downturn, which in a people-intensive business means job losses. And although some bankers expect a tough 2024, others sense an opportunity for European banks from the Basel Endgame.

An electronic board shows Shanghai and Shenzhen stock indexes, at the Lujiazui financial district in Shanghai, China October 25, 2022. But the extent of the political and economic jitters merely mirrors other signs of a long-term China exit well beyond portfolio flows. Earlier this month, China recorded its first-ever quarterly deficit in "bricks and mortar" foreign direct investment (FDI). What's more, a multi-year aversion to China investments then risks colliding with deteriorating long-term economic growth dynamics - heightened by rising youth unemployment and dire demographics. Despite some recent upgrades of China growth forecasts, yet another business survey this week raised red flags.

Vietnam has already rail connections to China, but the system is old with limited capacity on the Vietnam side. The upgraded railway would pass through the region where Vietnam has its largest deposits of rare earths, of which China is by far the world's biggest refiner. Chinese and Vietnamese rare earths industry experts discussed last week stronger cooperation on processing the minerals, according to Vietnamese state media. It is unclear how much China would contribute to the upgraded railway track in Vietnam and whether Hanoi would accept sizeable financing from Beijing on this. A strengthened railway link could also boost Vietnam's export to China, mostly of agriculture products, boost Chinese tourism to northern Vietnam and further integrate the two countries' manufacturing industries, which experts already consider as symbiotic, with factories in Vietnam largely assembling components produced in China.
