Pfizer 's experimental drug for a common, life-threatening condition that causes cancer patients to lose their appetite and weight showed positive results in a midstage trial, the drugmaker said Saturday. Patients with the condition, called cancer cachexia, who took Pfizer's treatment saw improvements in body weight, muscle mass, quality of life and physical function, according to the drugmaker. The condition affects about 9 million people worldwide, and 80% of cancer patients suffering from it are expected to die within one year of diagnosis, according to the company. Cancer cachexia is currently defined as a loss of 5% or more body weight over the past six months in cancer patients, along with symptoms such as fatigue, according to the National Cancer Institute. Allerton said a work group of experts defines a weight gain of greater than 5% as a "clinically meaningful difference in cancer patients with cachexia."

Sopa Images | Lightrocket | Getty ImagesLONDON — The U.K. is leading a recovery in Europe's long subdued office real estate market, with overall investment in the sector expected to pick up further in the second half of the year. Overall, European office investment transactions in the first half of the year fell 21% year-on-year to 14.1 billion euros, Savills data showed — a 60% decrease on the five-year H1 average. Europe's divided recoveryThe U.K. real estate market was the first in Europe to undergo a significant contraction following its peak in 2022. CNN —Britain’s approval of its first new deep coal mine in decades was unlawful, London’s High Court ruled on Friday following a legal challenge brought by environmental campaigners. Friends of the Earth and South Lakeland Action on Climate Change challenged the previous Conservative government’s 2022 approval of a coking coal mine in northwest England. Britain dropped its defence of the legal challenges after a Supreme Court ruling earlier this year said planning authorities must consider the impact of burning, not just extracting, fossil fuels when deciding whether to approve projects. Developer West Cumbria Mining fought the case and said the project — which planned to extract coking coal for manufacturing steel, rather than to generate electricity — would be “a unique ‘net zero’ mine”. A spokesperson for West Cumbria Mining said the company “will consider the implications of the High Court judgment and has no comment to make at this time”.

That research, published in the journal Nature, overturned a century-old idea that the stone came from current-day Wales. The Altar Stone, the largest of the bluestones used to build Stonehenge, lies at the heart of the ancient monument in southern England. “The Altar Stone is anomalous in many ways to both the bluestones and the sarsens at Stonehenge,” Bevins said. But discovering that Wales was unlikely to be the origin site for the Altar Stone was a game changer, Bevins said. The researchers compared their findings with samples from the Altar Stone and found no mineralogical connection between the rocks.

The minister also told CNBC he is assessing whether he needs additional powers to regulate social media companies over the dissemination of harmful content online. A government spokesperson told CNBC earlier this year that its "immediate focus is getting the Online Safety Act implemented quickly and effectively." Dollar weak as traders add to wagers of big rate cut from Fed
  + stars: | 2024-09-13 | by ( ) www.cnbc.com   time to read: +3 min
While the Fed is all but certain to cut rates next week, uncertainty around whether it will go with a 25 basis point cut or 50 basis points has kept investors on the edge and weighed on the dollar. Analysts pointed to media reports from the Financial Times and the Wall Street Journal suggesting the Fed's decision would be a close call as one of the reasons for traders adding to wagers of a big rate cut next week. Higher U.S. jobless claims data released on Thursday and the Wall Street Journal article on the Fed's rate cut dilemma revived bets on a jumbo cut at the September meeting, according to Christopher Wong, currency strategist at OCBC. Besides the Fed, the Bank of England and Bank of Japan hold policy meetings next week. "Risks remain that inflation may not return to target as easily as everyone, including the Fed, seems to expect."

Data centers today are crucial computing infrastructure that power the modern-day internet. Granting data centers critical infrastructure status will enable the government to coordinate better against hackers and unexpected cyber events, Kyle said. Data center operators will effectively be given a direct line to the government to prepare for and respond to data threats, the government said. Data centers are a key part of the modern internet as it exists today. When they go offline, it can cause massive outages for internet users, with sometimes critical services going down.

A Florida judge has declared Joe Jonas and Sophie Turner divorced and single, signing off on a confidential agreement reached between the two. Judge Gina Beovides declared that the marriage was “irretrievably broken,” and that the couple’s agreement, especially their parenting plan, was in the best interest of the family. After-hours emails seeking comment from representatives of both Turner and Jonas were not immediately returned. But the split turned into a serious dispute within weeks when Turner sued to force Jonas to turn over the girls’ passports so they could join her in her native England. Turner said she learned of Jonas’ divorce filing through the media, while Jonas said the two had had multiple conversations about it.

Bloomberg | Bloomberg | Getty ImagesA landmark ruling from the European Union's top court means Ireland will receive 13 billion euros ($14.4 billion) in unpaid taxes from Apple — a windfall that Dublin had spent several years fighting to avoid. In a decision the European Court of Justice (ECJ) said was final, the EU's top court on Tuesday ruled that Apple must pay Ireland billions of euros in back taxes. For years, Ireland consistently argued that the iPhone maker should not have to repay unpaid taxes to the country. The decision comes at a time when Ireland is in the unusual position of running a budget surplus of several billion euros, partly due to the strength of corporate tax receipts. UK economy flatlines again in July, below expectations
  + stars: | 2024-09-11 | by ( Karen Gilchrist | ) www.cnbc.com   time to read: +3 min
LONDON — The U.K. economy continued to flatline in July on a month-on-month basis, flash figures published from the Office for National Statistics showed Wednesday. Britain's economic growth was up 0.5% in the three month to July, slightly below economist expectations and the 0.6% recorded in the second quarter ending in June. The U.K. economy had recorded modest but steady expansion almost every month so far this year, having emerged from a shallow recession at the start of the year. Finance Minister Rachel Reeves said the print left her "under no illusion" of the challenges faced by the U.K. economy. But she added that further movement in interest rates anticipated from the Bank of England could help ease wider growth pressures.
