Bitcoin's blues could linger throughout July, but investors are still optimistic about the cryptocurrency in the second half of the year. July is usually a strong month for bitcoin, which has finished higher for the month in seven of the last 11 years, according to CoinGlass. "There are always other known potential sources of bitcoin supply from government for example, but it's always uncertain when that's coming to market. This week, the crypto market was startled when the U.S. and German governments sent large amounts of previously seized bitcoin to exchanges, according to CryptoQuant. Marion Laboure, senior strategist at Deutsche Bank Research, said growing demand for crypto ETFs will help keep bitcoin's price "elevated" in the months ahead.

Bitcoin is testing a key level once again after the cryptocurrency fell below $60,000 this week for the first time since May 3. "There's key support at $57,500, the 200-day average, down to $56,500, the May low — and a downside breach would be damaging." It is currently suffering from a lack of near-term catalysts, low demand for bitcoin exchange-traded funds and miners' selling of bitcoin. BTC.CM= 6M mountain Bitcoin this year If bitcoin fails to hold $57,000, Wald added, $49,000 would become its next key downside level. Bitcoin's 16% sell-off this month is testing a key support level at around $60,000. This support level is bolstered by Bitcoin's 200-day moving average of just under $58,000. A break below $60,000 could lead to a 15% decline to the next support level at $51,500. AdvertisementThe steady decline in bitcoin this month has the cryptocurrency testing a key support level that could ultimately give way to a more painful sell-off. But if it doesn't, and bitcoin decisively breaks below $60,000, that suggests the token could continue its descent to its next support level at around $51,500.

Bitcoin's 10% sell-off since June 7 signals a warning for the broader stock market. AdvertisementBitcoin's 10% sell-off since June 7 is sending a warning sign to the broader stock market, according to Stifel strategist Barry Bannister. Bitcoin's inability to hit new record highs suggests the stock market is likely to play catch-up as it's set to decline in line with the cryptocurrency, according to the note. Bannister isn't the only analyst on Wall Street taking stock market cues from bitcoin. AdvertisementAdding to Bannister's conviction of an imminent stock market sell-off is the Federal Reserve, which could keep interest rates higher for longer to combat still-elevated inflation.

A US-based lawyer who has represented accused Chinese money launderers said the tempo of law enforcement operations against the alleged launderers has increased in recent weeks as federal agents close in on “bigger fish” among Chinese money launderers in the US. None of the federal law enforcement agencies involved in tracking Chinese money launderers agreed to be interviewed on the record. Grassley and Whitehouse have each introduced legislation they say is key to closing loopholes in US law that are actively exploited by the cartels’ money launderers. Elaborate networksRecent court documents illuminate how far-flung and elaborate US-based networks of alleged Chinese money launderers are. Mirror TransactionsExperts say the Chinese money launderers have mastered the art of so-called mirror transactions, which involve a series of deposits at multiple bank accounts to conceal the drug money.

You don’t hear so much about effective altruism now that one of its most famous exponents, Sam Bankman-Fried, was found guilty of stealing $8 billion from customers of his cryptocurrency exchange. But if you read this newsletter, you might be the kind of person who can’t help but be intrigued by effective altruism. Effective altruism is a new movement inspired by philosophers (including Peter Singer and William MacAskill) and embraced by Silicon Valley engineers who pride themselves on taking a logical, data-driven approach to life. Last week I talked with people who believe in effective altruism and others who don’t. Is it egotistical or merely sensible to demand proof that our money is being put to good use?

The long-awaited bitcoin exchange traded funds launched in January, and financial advisors are on their way – though gradually – toward adopting them, according to BlackRock's Samara Cohen. The iShares Bitcoin Trust (IBIT) was among the funds to debut earlier this year. Responses ranged from bitcoin's notorious price volatility to the flagship cryptocurrency being too nascent to have established a significant track record. "I would call them wary … that's their job," Cohen said of the skeptical financial advisors. "This is an asset class that has had 90% price volatility at times in history, and their job is really to construct portfolios and do the risk analysis and due diligence.

Bitcoin is predicted to hit $500,000 by 2029, according to Bernstein. The bullish outlook is driven by a sustained boom in demand for bitcoin ETFs, combined with constrained supply. AdvertisementThe price of bitcoin is set to soar to $500,000 by the end of the decade, according to a recent note from Bernstein. Advertisement"This is led by unprecedented Bitcoin demand ($190Bn AUM in 2025E vs. $60Bn today) via ETFs run by the world's leading asset managers, and Bitcoin supply being constrained," Bernstein said. Bernstein argues that MicroStrategy deserves the premium valuation as it offers investors an "active-leveraged" strategy compared to passive bitcoin ETFs.

According to data from CryptoQuant, the flow of bitcoin leaving miners wallets for exchanges – which indicates a selling event – reached a two-month high last weekend. Additionally, miner selling through over-the-counter desks saw its biggest daily volume since late March. CryptoQuant shows the hourly transfer of bitcoin from miners to exchanges rose to more than 3,000 bitcoins on June 9. "Daily bitcoin miner revenues stand today at about $35 million, down 55% from their 2024 peak reached in March." That's mostly as a result of "depressed" transaction fees, however, rather than the slashing of miners' block reward at the halving.

This disastrous mindset has hollowed out Silicon Valley's ability to innovate and caused regular people to grow increasingly frustrated with everyday tech. The large platforms have generally ignored this feedback for one big reason: The tech industry has been taken over by career managers. Now Google Search is more profitable and worse, elevating spammy content and outright scams, a problem exacerbated by artificial intelligence. AdvertisementBut today's tech products feel built to sell a dream of the future rather than solve a customer's existing pains. As long as the tech industry is controlled by people who don't build things, it will continue to build products that help raise growth metrics rather than help consumers with tangible problems.

Crypto's culture encourages investors to "HODL," or hold on for dear life, in the rollercoaster ride of bitcoin 's extreme fluctuations. But this long-prized practice may diminish as adoption of ETFs grows, particularly if traditional investors who are accustomed to rebalancing their portfolios regularly add in bitcoin exposure. "From a risk management point of view, rebalancing is a good thing. But rebalancing also means that they're going to be sellers along this journey." At the moment, long-term holders are selling, as is normal during bull markets, after accumulating bitcoin during the bear market.

Some Americans believe that real estate is the best long-term investment. If you're among them, real estate investment trusts, or REITs, might be the easiest way to tap the market. About 36% of surveyed Americans ranked real estate as the top long-term investment, more than cited stocks or mutual funds (22%), gold (18%), and savings accounts or certificates of deposits (13%), according to a recent survey by Gallup, a global analytics and advisory firm. A REIT is a publicly traded company that invests in different types of income-producing residential or commercial real estate. In many cases, you can buy shares of publicly traded REITs like you would a stock, or shares of a REIT mutual fund or exchange-traded fund.
