One person survived the Saurya Airlines crash, the Civil Aviation Authority said in a statement. The Saurya Airlines plane caught fire at the airport in Kathmandu, Nepal on July 24, 2024. Last year, Nepal saw its worst plane crash in more than 30 years when at least 68 people died when a Yeti Airlines flight went down near Pokhara. In early 2018, a US-Bangla Airlines flight from Bangladesh’s capital Dhaka to Kathmandu crashed on landing and caught fire, killing 51 people. And in 2016, a Tara Air flight crashed while flying the same route as the 2023 crash.

Caracas CNN —It would be easy to dismiss this Sunday’s presidential election in Venezuela as a fait accompli. The opposition campaign has re-energized its bases, and the candidature of Edmundo González has attracted widespread support in Venezuela and abroad. A chance to rebuild Venezuela’s economic power“On the ballot is how long it’ll take to fix Venezuela’s economy,” said Asdrubal Oliveros, founder of Caracas firm Ecoanalitica, in his weekly podcast on July 8. Once the fifth-largest economy in Latin America, today Venezuela’s economy has shrunk to the equivalent of a medium-sized city, smaller than say, Milwaukee, according to data from the IMF. As Venezuela’s economy has crumbled, around eight million Venezuelans have already fled their country, many of them scattered across South America.

You might expect to see litter, trash or even roadkill on the side of a highway. But a 3,600-pound hot dog? Just after 11 a.m. Monday, employees of Oscar Mayer were driving one of the company’s promotional Wienermobiles on an Illinois highway when the driver hit another car, lost control, overcorrected and rolled the vehicle on its side, the Illinois State Police said. Video taken after the collision showed two people — “hotdoggers,” as the company calls them — climbing out of the passenger-side door and hopping down to safety. Later, a tow truck crane arrived, scooped up the Wienermobile and carried it away.

A New York couple who bought their 16-year-old son a BMW were sentenced on Monday to three years of probation and 26 weeks of parenting classes after the teenager drove the car at speeds of more than 100 miles an hour, slammed into a truck and killed his passenger, a 14-year-old girl. The teenager, whose name has not been released because of his age, was arraigned last December on at least a dozen charges, including second-degree manslaughter and reckless endangerment of a child. He faces up to 15 years in prison if convicted. He had a junior driver’s license, which prohibited him from driving unsupervised under any circumstances in New York City, when in May 2023 he crashed his red 2005 BMW 325i into the back of a parked UPS truck in the Springfield Gardens neighborhood of Queens, prosecutors said. The teenage driver survived the crash with minor injuries, but his passenger, Fortune Williams, a freshman at a Springfield Gardens high school, was thrown from the car and pronounced dead at the scene, prosecutors said.

CNN —President Joe Biden ran for reelection to save democracy. “It has been the greatest honor of my life to serve as your President,” Biden said in a letter he posted to X on Sunday afternoon. His struggles validated concerns of majorities of voters that he would be too old for a second term that would have ended when he is 86. But in the end, Biden could not find a way to make voters unsee the poignant picture of an 81-year-old commander in chief who appeared to have seriously declined and was stumbling in the debate. Years earlier, in March 1952, Harry S. Truman, another Democratic president, had decided not to seek his own second term.

Tadej Pogačar completes dominant Tour de France victory

CNN —A certain nonchalance has marked Tadej Pogačar’s ruthless overall victory at this year’s Tour de France, a race he has dominated from start to finish, accomplishing feats not achieved for more than a quarter of century. His fifth and sixth stage victories of the race followed on Saturday and Sunday, the biggest haul for any rider since 2009 and an enormous amount for a general classification rider like Pogačar. Not since 1948 has a rider won five mountain stages in a single edition of the race like Pogacar did this year. Their rivalry has shaped every edition of the Tour de France since 2021 when Denmark’s Vingegaard emerged as an unlikely challenger to a rampant Pogačar. Only young Remco Evenepoel, making his Tour de France debut, could remain within touching distance of these two, eventually finishing in third place, 9:18 behind Pogačar.

Take activist hedge funds, which buy up a percentage of a company's stock (or an asset) and then use their weight to push for operational changes. Or there would be a fun, splashy war between the hedge fund and the C-suite. Hedge funds rely on outperforming the market when times are hard and it's easier to find pockets of outperformance and exploit them. Of course, hedge funds are having a hard time coming up with a crew because the clients have changed too. At 5:30 a.m., US cybersecurity firm CrowdStrike tells customers that it was “aware of reports of crashes” of its software on Microsoft Windows operating systems, according to a company advisory viewed by CNN. Australian lenders ANZ and Westpac were also impacted, according to Downdetector, a website that tracks cyber outages. Other states also report impacts to their driving services, including Georgia, North Carolina, Texas and Tennessee. CrowdStrike would take steps “to prevent anything like this from happening again,” according to a statement on the company’s website.

In the hours after the American cybersecurity firm CrowdStrike deployed a flawed software update that crippled critical businesses and services around the world, scammers pounced. Government agencies and businesses have warned that the panic caused by the CrowdStrike crash on Friday has given criminals an opening to take advantage of customers who are looking to reschedule flights, access banking information or fix their technology. CrowdStrike provides cybersecurity for some 70 percent of Fortune 100 companies, so the crash led to widespread failures that grounded planes, crippled businesses, disrupted 911 emergency systems and delayed banking transactions. Thieves online are using the confusion to carry out a variety of scams, including phishing attempts, the U.S. Cybersecurity and Infrastructure Security Agency said. The National Cyber Security Center in the United Kingdom issued a similar statement noting that an “increase in phishing referencing this outage has already been observed.”

Security experts said CrowdStrike's routine update of its widely used cybersecurity software, which caused clients' computer systems to crash globally on Friday, apparently did not undergo adequate quality checks before it was deployed. The latest version of its Falcon Sensor software was meant make CrowdStrike clients' systems more secure against hacking by updating the threats it defends against. Patrick Wardle, a security researcher who specializes in studying threats against operating systems, said his analysis identified the code responsible for the outage. It's unclear how that faulty code got into the update and why it wasn't detected before being released to customers. Other security companies have had similar episodes in the past.
