While the major equity averages were rallying off their October 2023 lows, many gambling names did not participate in the rally. DraftKings (DKNG) DKNG certainly has the most established uptrend in the group, having sustained a fairly consistent uptrend through much of 2023. Higher highs and higher lows have marked the next 14 months, forming a classic Dow Theory uptrend. The October 2023 low was noteworthy in that the stock found support right at the August low around $26. Wynn Resorts (WYNN) WYNN has undergone a similar reversal off a December 2023 low, and also has recently broken above the crucial 200-day moving average.

At that time, Nvidia's market cap stood at $583.5 billion.

In today's big story, we're looking at why M&A could be staging a comeback and which bankers made the most of 2023 . The big storyDealmaker's delighttatomm/iStock, Tyler Le/BIThree monster deals announced in less than a week has Wall Street wondering: Is M&A back? But after a dreadful 2022 and 2023, dealmaking is showing signs of life, Business Insider's Theron Mohamed writes. Capital One, Truist, and Walmart announced acquisitions totaling $53 billion this week, leaving bankers hopeful the good times (and fees) are back. Deals represent an exit opportunity for companies, giving their investors (some of whom are employees) a chance to cash out.

Big names boosting dividends as of late include Walmart , which hiked its annual payment by 9% to 83 cents a share. Meta Platforms made headlines earlier this month when it announced it would issue its first-ever quarterly dividend – a payout of 50 cents per share. Government spending, including the CHIPS Act and the infrastructure legislation known as the Inflation Reduction Act , and the upcoming presidential election are also key considerations for companies, Silverblatt added. Dividend growth names, for instance, might offer you lower yields in the present, but you have the prospect of higher future payouts. "You need to know the fund, what they invest in and what the restrictions are," Silverblatt said.

Many ETFs and stocks have been rallying over the last four months, and some have been making new all-time highs. The OIH Oil Services ETF is not one of them. Crude oil All energy-related stocks and ETFs are beholden to crude, which has been struggling since topping out in June 2022. Crude oil recently bounced from its lows and is trying, once again, to leverage a potential bullish chart formation. In my opinion, this rally in GE is overdone and an opportunity to fade the strength. GE is trading at the same price as in 2016, when it was earning nearly three times more in profits. The trade structure that I prefer to use here is to sell options and collect premium while taking a neutral/bearish outlook. Selling a Call Vertical Spread is the structure that I would use for this GE trade. BEFORE MAKING ANY FINANCIAL DECISIONS, YOU SHOULD STRONGLY CONSIDER SEEKING ADVICE FROM YOUR OWN FINANCIAL OR INVESTMENT ADVISOR.

If that return isn't there, will they keep ordering the latest and greatest Nvidia chips? Despite the overall improvements in availability, Nvidia on Wednesday indicated it will face supply-and-demand imbalances with its upcoming AI chips. The U.S. government has said its export controls are designed to keep high-powered AI chips out of the hands of the Chinese military. In the November-through-January quarter, China accounted for a mid-single-digit percentage of Nvidia's $18.4 billion in data center revenue, according to the company. The fact Nvidia still booked China revenue in the hundreds of millions of dollars means it could take a further hit in the region.

Nvidia has been awarded the flagship status of companies leading the artificial intelligence revolution, and all eyes turn to fourth-quarter earnings after the bell Wednesday. The expectations are massive compared to the same quarter last year — and even compared to last quarter's earnings. The massive gains in price reflect this historic growth and the question is will the chart continue its rally following earnings? On Jan. 9 , I wrote about NVDA breaking through the 2023 resistance zone of $500 with targets of $650 in the first half of this year, and $775 in all of 2024. Expectations are for earnings of $4.59 per share vs 88 cents in Q4 of '23 and $4.02 in Q3 of '24.

Thirty years ago, officials at the Federal Reserve were hotly debating whether the economy could continue to chug along so vigorously without spurring a pickup in inflation. And back in 1994, it turned out that it could, thanks to one key ingredient: productivity. Now, official productivity data are showing a big pickup for the first time in years. If the answer is yes, it would have huge implications for the U.S. economy. And a steady pickup in productivity could allow the economy to take off in a healthy way.

This confidence is echoed by other recent metrics, including a survey by Morgan Stanley showing that consumer sentiment hit a five-month high in January. Economists who spoke to CNBC Make It say it's likely the cumulative effect of wage growth, low unemployment and slowing inflation. "But with slowing inflation and strong wage growth, adjusted-for-inflation incomes are increasing, giving consumers more buying power," he says. Wages increased 5% in January 2024, a three-month moving average of nominal wage growth for individuals, as measured by the Atlanta Fed's Wage Growth Tracker. Wage growth, slowing inflation and low unemployment are the main factors for improved optimism among Americans, Ernest says.

We're buying the dip in Wynn Resorts, which was trading lower by roughly 4% on Tuesday. Given the positive update about travel to Macao, a special administrative region of China, you would think Wynn shares would be trading higher on the session. However, softness has not shown up in the Macao travel and gross gaming revenue numbers. United States one dollar bills are curled and inspected during production at the Bureau of Engraving and Printing in Washington. The dollar was steady on Monday after data last week showing U.S. inflation remained sticky cast doubts on when the Federal Reserve would start its easing cycle, while the yen remained rooted near the psychologically key 150 per dollar level. Chandler said there appears little on the charts to deter a test to last year's low of 152 per dollar level. Several Fed officials including Christopher Waller and Raphael Bostic are also due to speak this week. The Australian dollar rose 0.29% to $0.655, while the New Zealand dollar advanced 0.34% to $0.614.

The S&P 500 has fallen below 5000, but that's to be expected if history is any indication. Bank of America's Steven Suttmeier says the index is on its way to new highs of up to 5600. Along the way, his charts say 8 ETFs are preparing for bullish moves upward as well. The S&P 500 recently became the S&P 5000, hitting a new all-time high only a few short weeks into the new year as the market's rally continued. The latest consumer-price inflation data put a damper on things, however, and the index returned below record levels.

On Tuesday, Oklahoma's country music station KYKC refused to play Beyoncé's new song "TEXAS HOLD 'EM." Here's what to know about Beyoncé's challenges with being recognized by the country music industry. I requested Texas Hold ‘Em at my local country radio station (KYKC) and after requesting, i received an email from the radio station stating “We do not play Beyoncé on KYKC as we are a country music station. Although critics and fans praised Beyoncé's country pivot, the Country Music Association Awards and the Grammy's country music committee did not nominate the song for any awards, which was viewed as a snub. Slate reported in 2016 that Orlando's country radio station K92.3 received backlash from its listeners after playing "Daddy Lessons" on air.

The cup-and-handle (also known as a cup-with-handle) pattern occurs when you have a rounded basing pattern after a rally phase. Then, in December 2023, both stocks retested their July peak, which formed the cup of this pattern. If this level would fail to hold, then we'll have one more Magnificent 7 stock in a confirmed bearish phase. What concerns me most about these patterns popping up is not just that it suggests caution for these two technology stocks, which I believe it does.
