The roar of outrage from Republican leaders to that indictment restored Trump’s grip on the party after frustration over his role in the GOP’s disappointing 2022 midterm elections had loosened it. Repeating the pattern from other moments of maximum threat to Trump, the GOP response has been marked by a pronounced communications imbalance. (The poll was conducted after Trump’s indictment in Manhattan but before the recent federal charges.) At another point Trump insisted, “These criminals cannot be rewarded” – presumably by frightening Republican voters away from nominating him. Yet, Robinson believes, by echoing Trump’s claims of unfair treatment, the other candidates are encouraging Republican voters to accept his framing of the race.

The 37 federal charges against former President Donald Trump were unsealed on Friday. Trump announced the indictment on Truth Social and has been pushing his narrative since Thursday. While his team feels good about their response to the charges, that does not mean he's off the hook. While that puts him at a public relations advantage over special counsel Jack Smith, it doesn't mean he's clear of serious legal peril. And if Trump is convicted, the judge has a large say, within the guidelines, of whether he ever sees prison time.

No one will be above the law.”That’s what then-candidate Donald Trump said at a campaign rally in August of 2016. Trump has reached for apocalyptic rhetoric, calling for his supporters to protest at the Florida courthouse when he is arraigned on Tuesday. The threats of violence reflect an authoritarian impulse completely at odds with the alleged principles of the Republican Party and the conservative movement. Here’s the key difference: Trump was not charged for having the classified documents but for willfully trying to hide the documents after the feds enquired. When facts and reason no longer apply, desperate individuals resort to threats of violence.

Chris Christie laid into Donald Trump in a CNN town hall Monday night, calling the former president “angry” and “vengeful” and accusing him of “vanity run amok” within the event’s opening minutes. Chris Christie greets CNN's Anderson Cooper at the start of the CNN Republican Presidential Town Hall in New York on Monday, June 12. Christie speaks during the town hall. The federal indictment of former President Donald J. Trump has left the Republican Party — and his rivals for the party’s nomination — with a stark choice between deferring to a system of law and order that has been central to the party’s identity for half a century or a more radical path of resistance, to the Democratic Party in power and to the nation’s highest institutions that Mr. Trump now derides. How the men and women who seek to lead the party into the 2024 election respond to the indictments of the former president in the coming months will have enormous implications for the future of the G.O.P. So far, the declared candidates for the presidency who are not Mr. Trump have divided into three camps regarding his federal indictment last Thursday: those who have strongly backed him and his insistence that the indictment is a politically driven means to deny him a second White House term, such as Vivek Ramaswamy; those who have urged Americans to take the charges seriously, such as Chris Christie and Asa Hutchinson; and those who have straddled both camps, condemning the indictment but nudging voters to move past Mr. Trump’s leadership, such as Ron DeSantis and Nikki Haley. The trick, for all of Mr. Trump’s competitors, will be finding the balance between harnessing the anger of the party’s core voters who remain devoted to him while winning their support as an alternative nominee.

The indictment alleged that Trump not only withheld classified documents but lied to federal agents and investigators about his involvement. Trump hits campaign trail as indictment roils 2024 race

CNN —Former President Donald Trump is set to return to the campaign trail Saturday, traveling to Georgia and North Carolina for speeches at a pair of state Republican conventions as news of his federal indictment roils the party’s 2024 presidential race. The pre-planned stops come the day after the Justice Department unsealed its indictment laying out the government’s case that Trump and aide Walt Nauta mishandled classified national security documents. The visits will give Trump a chance to respond to the charges in a campaign-style as he mounts battles on both the political and legal fronts. So far, Trump has cast his prosecution as a politically motivated effort to stop his bid for the presidency. In March, the Manhattan district attorney in New York indicted Trump on charges related to hush-money payments to a former adult star.

Chris Christie, once a Donald Trump ally, called the facts of the federal indictment "devastating." Christie is one of two 2024 GOP rivals not to defend Trump following these new allegations. On Friday evening, Christie was one of two rivals not to defend Trump over the 37-count indictment against the former president. During the 2016 primaries, Christie dropped out and roughly two weeks later endorsed then-candidate Trump — the first GOP governor to do so — ahead of Super Tuesday. Christie is now running against Trump in the 2024 GOP primary.

"In the end, they're not coming after me, they're coming after you -- and I'm just standing in their way," Trump will say, according to his prepared remarks. "The weaponization of federal law enforcement represents a mortal threat to a free society," Florida Gov. He said the details of the Trump indictment is "devastating." DOJ will seek incarceration for Trump, a national security attorney and former US prosecutor say. McClanahan said evidence in the indictment was laid out to show "that this is a kingpin who knowingly broke the law, endangered national security, endangered nuclear weapon security, endangered other countries' national security." In this case, that looks likely to be US District Judge Aileen Cannon, who Trump appointed. It's more likely that, if convicted, he'd be sentenced to house arrest with an ankle monitor, McClanahan said. "Trump can share that information that is in his head whether he is incarcerated or not incarcerated," she said.

For his rivals, though, the campaign has been frozen in place, with Trump again seizing the spotlight and relegating them to supporting roles. So when word of the indictment broke, DeSantis sprinted to Trump’s corner – along with the loyalists he is ultimately hoping will break for him. Look, look at this.”Among the 2024 field, DeSantis and longshot primary candidate Vivek Ramaswamy emerged overnight as Trump’s most ardent defenders. Ahead of a new ad launch, its first of the 2024 primary, a senior adviser to the group said the new indictment furthered Christie’s political case against Trump. “While Donald Trump is entitled to the presumption of innocence, the ongoing criminal proceedings will be a major distraction,” Hutchinson said.

CNN —Next year will mark 50 years since President Richard Nixon resigned as a result of the Watergate scandal. The fact is that almost all of the serious Republican contenders were complicit in helping Trump at one point or another. The most important factor remains the intense partisanship that we see within the Republican Party. This intense partisanship also gave rise to an extreme theory of presidential power that has taken hold since Ronald Reagan was president. All of these factors have converged to allow Trump to remain the most powerful Republican in the room.

"The weaponization of federal law enforcement represents a mortal threat to a free society," DeSantis, who is running a distant second behind Trump in the polls, wrote on Twitter. Scott, who is polling in the single digits, also criticized what he called the "weaponization" of federal prosecutors. A spokesperson for Special Counsel Jack Smith, the Justice Department official who is handling the investigation, declined to comment. Rivals are wary of angering Trump's base, which is thought to make up 30% of the Republican electorate and is largely unshakeable in support for Trump. If the indictments pile up, Coughlin predicts the other Republican candidates will start to argue that Trump cannot win the general election.

But my enjoyment of his newfound Resistance shtick doesn’t bode well for Christie. The people he needs to win over are not liberal New York Times columnists, but voters who hate liberal New York Times columnists.
