An aerial view shows the Fukushima Daiichi nuclear power plant following a strong earthquake, in Okuma town, Fukushima prefecture, Japan in this photo taken by Kyodo on March 17, 2022. Members of a group that tracks such levels in food and seawater, they fear Japan's plans to release treated radioactive water into the sea near the Fukushima nuclear plant could stir an anxiety among residents reminiscent of the 2011 disaster. "The people of Fukushima endured the risks for the last 12 years and have confirmed the radiation level has dropped," said Ai Kimura, director of non-profit group Mothers' Radiation Lab Fukushima, also known as Tarachine. Japan is preparing this summer to start discharging into the Pacific more than a million tons of water from the tsunami-crippled power plant, but has not yet revealed the date. Even though it’s still August, eyes are already on how the upcoming holiday shopping season will pan out. Coresight expects the 2023 year-end holiday sales for October through December to be up by just low single digits from a year ago. Harmon said this year’s forecast rests on the shoulders of “a couple of good years of strong holiday sales growth, making comparisons more difficult, and takes into account holiday spending is occurring sooner.”“The patterns of holiday spending have changed. The same pattern was repeated last year, effectively elongating the holiday sales season. At the same time, Harmon said US retail sales are slowing.

CNN —A Montana judge handed a significant victory on Monday to more than a dozen young plaintiffs in the nation’s first constitutional climate trial, as extreme weather becomes more deadly and scientists warn the climate crisis is eroding our environment and natural resources. While Seeley’s ruling won’t prevent mining or burning fossil fuels in the state, it will reverse a recently passed state law that prohibits state agencies from considering planet-warming pollution when permitting fossil fuel projects. “Their same legal theory has been thrown out of federal court and courts in more than a dozen states. The federal climate case alleges the federal government’s activities allowing further fossil fuel development, including permitting and leasing for oil and gas drilling, is violating young people’s constitutional rights to life, liberty and property. Olson recently told CNN she hopes the state case will boost the Juliana case.

Those winds also battered power lines on the island, and dramatic videos show lines swaying and being toppled in the gusts. Now, some locals are casting blame on Hawaiian Electric, the state’s biggest utility, for not shutting off power to high-risk areas – and claiming that its power lines could have sparked the deadly fire. State officials were well aware of the danger posed by downed power lines during hurricanes. A 2021 state report noted that “downed power lines” and “residential and wildland fires” were hazards related to hurricanes. Maui Mayor Richard Bissen said Thursday that power lines that were “still energized” had fallen on the roads.

Hawaii Army National Guard CH47 Chinook helicopters perform aerial water bucket drops on the island of Maui to assist with fight of wildfires in Maui, Hawaii, August 9, 2023. An out-of-control wildfire that began along a major Central Maui highway burns Thursday July 11, 2019, in Maui, Hawaii. “Especially when you have severe drought conditions like we have.”Despite these growing dangers, Hawaii state budgets for fire management have not kept pace with worsening conditions, according to the Hawaii Wildfire Management Organization, a nonprofit. Hawaii is hardly unique: As climate change is exacerbating natural disasters, state officials across the country are also struggling to respond to new threats. And it’s unclear how significantly additional preparedness and mitigation efforts could have reduced the destruction of a blaze with the intensity and speed of the Lahaina wildfire.

International travel demand is outpacing domestic demand as Americans flock to Europe in 2023. Our international wanderlust may be a worrying trend for domestic airlines — but it makes now the perfect time to buy flights for fall and winter vacations within the US. Low-cost carriers Spirit Airlines , Frontier Airlines , and JetBlue Airways had similar outlooks. Redburn analyst James Goodall said Monday that domestic airlines are likely to feel this pressure for not just months, but years, Barron's reported . Frontier AirlinesAs domestic airlines take a hit, consumers could reap the benefits with cheap fares and fall promotions designed to stimulate demand.

Former Vice President Mike Pence has qualified for the first Republican presidential primary debate set for later this month, his White House campaign said Tuesday. Pence joins at least half a dozen other candidates who have already clinched spots on the debate stage, including Florida Gov. "Hopefully, former President Trump has the courage to show up," O'Malley said. For lower-polling candidates — a bucket that could include everyone except for Trump and DeSantis — a breakout debate performance could be critical. Other people have similarly become infected without obvious explanation, suggesting that leprosy is now endemic in the state, the researchers said. Still, there is no rising tide of leprosy in Florida. In the United States, the number of infections plummeted after peaking in 1983 but began a slow rise again about 20 years ago. Even in a year with a huge tech stock rally, Columbia Global Technology Growth Fund (CTYRX) stands out for its outsized gains. The final bucket in the portfolio is value opportunity names, or stocks that Narang and his team believe have valuations cheaper than the entire portfolio. He cited data from Alliance Bernstein showing that tech stocks in the most expensive and least expensive quintiles tend to outperform historically — suggesting the attraction of a balanced approach. "Returns seesaw between growth and value over various periods of time," he added, noting this year's growth-oriented tech rally after last year's drubbing. The AI tools being applied to healthcare can generally be divided into two main categories. The first encompass large language models that are applied to administrative functions like processing medical claims or creating and analyzing medical records. In fact, up to 30 percent of radiology practices have already adopted AI tools. Right now, there are only a few clinical language models, and even the largest ones possess a relatively small number of parameters. As the quality and scope of clinical data available for training these large language models continue to grow, so will their capabilities.
