Three U.S.-based academics won the 2024 Nobel economics prize on Monday for their research into why global inequality persists, especially in countries dogged by corruption and dictatorship. The laureates have demonstrated the importance of societal institutions for achieving this,” said Jakob Svensson, Chair of the Committee for the Prize in Economic Sciences. Last year, Harvard economic historian Claudia Goldin won the prize for her work highlighting the causes of wage and labour market inequality between men and women. In 2019, economists Abhijit Banerjee, Esther Duflo and Michael Kremer won the award for work on fighting poverty. The economics prize has been dominated by U.S. academics since its inception, while U.S.-based researchers also tend to account for a large portion of winners in the scientific fields for which 2024 laureates were announced last week.

LONDON — The U.K.'s business minister said Monday that securing trade deals with India and Gulf nations remains "the priority" for the Labour government, with talks between Britain and the Gulf Corporation Council expected to resume as soon as next week. U.K. Business and Trade Minister Jonathan Reynolds told CNBC that negotiations with a six-strong group of Gulf countries would reconvene "very soon — maybe as soon as next week," while talks with India also remain a priority. U.K. free trade deals were touted as a key benefit of Brexit, with former Prime Minister and Brexiteer Boris Johnson vowing to secure one with India "by Diwali" 2022. The trade minister has also previously said that the government was pursuing trade talks with Israel, South Korea, Switzerland and Turkey. "It's important to recognize, whilst we don't do foreign policy through trade deals, British engagement commercially – country to country, business to business – is in itself a good thing," he said.

London CNN —A 39-year-old British woman was killed when a malfunctioning ottoman bed fell on her neck and asphyxiated her, a coroner’s report said. Ottoman beds have a base that can be raised – usually using gas-lift hydraulics – to access a storage space underneath. The mattress platform on Davey’s bed fell unexpectedly, “trapping her neck against the upper surface of the side panel of the bed’s base,” Chipperfield explained. I dropped everything that I was holding and tried to lift the top of the bed off her head. The bed was no longer a soft close and could fall heavily if it was released.

London CNN —Three economists were awarded the Nobel Prize Monday for their research into how the nature of institutions helps explain why some countries become rich and others remain poor. Daron Acemoglu, Simon Johnson and James Robinson will share the prize, which carries a cash award of 11 million Swedish kronor ($1 million). The authors warned that “the current path of AI is neither good for the economy nor for democracy.”The latest Nobel Prize in economics was announced in Stockholm on October 14, 2024. In “Why Nations Fail,” he and Robinson argued that China, because it lacks inclusive institutions, would not be able to sustain its economic growth. The economics prize is officially known as Bank of Sweden Prize in Economic Sciences in Memory of Alfred Nobel.

Canada and India each expelled six diplomats Monday in tit-for-tat moves as part of an escalating dispute over the June 2023 assassination of a Sikh activist in Canada. Shortly afterward, the Indian foreign ministry said that it was expelling six Canadian diplomats, including the acting high commissioner and the deputy high commissioner. It said in a statement that the diplomats were told to leave India by the end of Saturday. A senior Canadian official said that Canada expelled the Indian diplomats first before they withdrew. In response to the allegations, India told Canada last year to remove 41 of its 62 diplomats in the country.

CNN —A 26-year-old British man has died after falling from Spain’s tallest bridge during an attempt to climb one of its pylons. Local councillor Macarena Muñoz said he was accompanied by another British man, aged 24. “According to what we have been able to find out they had come to Talavera to climb the bridge and create content for social media,” Muñoz said in the statement. The British man is far from the first person to die in the pursuit of social media content in recent years. And in November 2019 a French tourist died after falling from a waterfall in Thailand while attempting to take a selfie.

The 15th-century explorer Christopher Columbus was a Sephardic Jew from Western Europe, Spanish scientists said on Saturday, after using DNA analysis to tackle a centuries-old mystery. Other theories range from him being a Spanish Jew or a Greek, to Basque, Portuguese or British. They compared them with those of known relatives and descendants and their findings were announced in a documentary titled “Columbus DNA: The true origin” on Spain’s national broadcaster TVE on Saturday. After analysing 25 possible places, Lorente said it was only possible to say Columbus was born in Western Europe. On Thursday, Lorente said they had confirmed previous theories that the remains in Seville Cathedral belonged to Columbus.

I flew with British Airways in both the economy (coach) and premium economy cabins. The upper deck of a BA Airbus A380 means plenty of space, even in economy. I got a good deal for my premium economy ticket, and I don't think I'd pay more for the amenities. I recently flew premium economy in a British Airways World Traveller Plus cabin. By contrast, the popularity of premium economy had me sitting in the middle section.

But Putin is not the only foreign leader Trump is talking to. And it is hardly unusual for a presidential nominee to begin holding some talks with foreign leaders. After the first attempt to assassinate Trump, in July, foreign leaders quickly moved to offer him their well-wishes. LONDON — The UK chief executive of Salesforce wants the Labor government to regulate artificial intelligence — but says it's important that policymakers don't tar all technology companies developing AI systems with the same brush. Bahrololoumi noted that there's a difference between companies developing consumer-facing AI tools — like OpenAI — and firms like Salesforce making enterprise AI systems. She said consumer-facing AI systems, such as ChatGPT , face fewer restrictions than enterprise-grade products, which have to meet higher privacy standards and comply with corporate guidelines. A spokesperson for the UK's Department of Science, Innovation and Technology (DSIT) said that planned AI rules would be "highly targeted to the handful of companies developing the most powerful AI models," rather than applying "blanket rules on the use of AI. " That indicates that the rules might not apply to companies like Salesforce, which don't make their own foundational models like OpenAI.

CNN —Archaeologists have identified the cannibalized remains of a senior officer who perished during an ill-fated 19th century Arctic expedition, offering insight into its lost crew’s tragic and grisly final days. The remains identified as Fitzjames’ in the new study, published September 24 in the Journal of Archaeological Science, were among them. The remains of James Fitzjames, a senior officer who took part in Sir John Franklin's lost expedition to the Northwest Passage, showed signs of having been cannibalized, a new study said. However, unlike Fitzjames’ remains, Gregory’s bones did not display any cut marks suggestive of cannibalism. Canada’s national parks service and the Inuit communities found the final resting place of the HMS Erebus in 2014 and the HMS Terror in 2016.
