The administration and other Western governments are scrambling to keep up with the mounting danger ISIS-K poses. Before this year, U.S. and other Western officials believed ISIS-K had the intent but not the ability to orchestrate attacks abroad. It was the deadliest terrorist attack in Europe since 2004. ISIS-K also launched a major attack in Iran this year that killed dozens, and other plots were disrupted in Europe. The Taliban sees ISIS-K as a threat to its rule and has launched a series of attacks on the group.

Near the end of his opinion on executive immunity, Chief Justice John G. Roberts Jr. pooh-poohed the fears of his liberal colleagues who worried in dissent that the broad protections the Supreme Court had conferred on former President Donald J. Trump would place future presidents beyond the reach of the law. The real concern, Chief Justice Roberts said, was not that immunity would embolden presidents to commit crimes with impunity, but rather that without it, the country’s rival leaders would endlessly be at each others’ throats. “The dissents overlook the more likely prospect of an executive branch that cannibalizes itself,” he wrote, “with each successive president free to prosecute his predecessors.”That dark vision, however right or wrong it proves to be, did not come out of nowhere: It was offered to the court by Mr. Trump’s own lawyers during oral arguments on the question of immunity that took place in April.

In fact, a single piece of evidence could be Trump's handiest monkey wrench of all. Manhattan district attorney's office/BIDays before closing arguments, Business Insider highlighted People's 81 as one of ten pieces of incriminating "smoking gun" evidence. SCOTUS/Business InsiderIt took less than a day for defense lawyers to use this ban on "official act" evidence to challenge Trump's May 30 conviction. "Under Trump," defense lawyer Todd Blanche wrote Monday, referring to the SCOTUS decision, "this official-acts evidence should never have been put before the jury." Why People's 81 may be Trump's best monkey-wrenchIn hopes of setting aside Trump's verdict, Trump's lawyers raised other instances where they say "official acts" were improperly used at trial against him.

CNN —Donald Trump will not be sentenced on his business fraud conviction until September, a New York judge ruled Tuesday in the wake of Monday’s Supreme Court decision on presidential immunity. The ruling could impact the indictments of Trump in the classified documents and Georgia election interference cases as well. Trump’s legal team filed a letter Monday seeking to challenge the former president’s conviction after the Supreme Court ruled that presidents have an absolute immunity from prosecution for core official acts. Will Scharf, an attorney who represents Trump in the immunity case, told CNN Monday night the high court’s ruling “absolutely” impacts the hush money case. The Supreme Court heard two other cases this term concerning the Jan. 6 attack on the Capitol. Chief Justice John G. Roberts Jr., writing for the majority, said Mr. Trump had at least presumptive immunity for his official acts. If Mr. Trump prevails at the polls, he could order the Justice Department to drop the charges. After the appeals court ruled against Mr. Trump, he asked the Supreme Court to intervene. At the argument, several of the conservative justices did not seem inclined to examine the details of the charges against Mr. Trump.

At the height of their careers, former defense ministers Li and Wei often struck a tough tone before the world’s top military officials. Former Defense Ministers Li Shangfu and his predecessor Wei Fenghe have both been expelled from the Communist Party over corruption allegations. Most of the generals dismissed or disappeared without explanation last year were linked to the Rocket Force or military equipment, including Li and Wei. An engineer by training, the 66-year-old spent decades launching rockets and satellites in southwest China before being promoted to the PLA headquarters to deal with military equipment procurement. “The gun barrel must always be held in the hands of those who are loyal and reliable to the party,” Xi told the PLA elites.

The question before the justices in Trump v. United States: Was Donald Trump immune from prosecution for the crimes the special counsel Jack Smith accused him of committing while president? Indeed, to my knowledge, no court has ever held that a president could be criminally immune under any circumstances. Instead of delivering that judgment many months ago and allowing the trial to proceed, the justices have given Mr. Trump the gift of delay piled upon delay. American voters will enter ballot booths to choose between Donald Trump and President Biden without knowing whether Mr. Trump is guilty of the crimes with which a grand jury of his fellow citizens charged him. This decision may seem like a reflection of a rogue conservative majority that can, in time, be changed.

The Supreme Court heard two other cases this term concerning the Jan. 6 attack on the Capitol. Chief Justice John G. CNN —The Supreme Court handed down a landmark decision Monday granting Donald Trump partial immunity from special counsel Jack Smith’s election subversion case, handing the former president a significant win during his reelection bid. For starters, the Supreme Court ruled that for “core” presidential activity, Trump has the absolute immunity he had sought. The analysis about what’s immune and what isn’t “ultimately is best left to the lower courts to perform,” Roberts wrote. Immune, immune, immune,” she wrote. In a significant break from the court’s other conservatives, Barrett seemed to suggest Trump should go to trial quickly.

But the court’s opinion also makes clear that this ruling is not a death knell for Smith’s case. Smith charged Trump with engaging in a “criminal scheme” to subvert the 2020 election; Trump has pleaded not guilty to four counts. In Nixon v. Fitzgerald, the Supreme Court held that a president enjoyed civil immunity for all “official acts.” Now, in Trump v. United States, the court grappled with which “official” acts should also receive criminal immunity. In order to settle the extent of Trump’s immunity, Chutkan should expeditiously schedule the mini-trial to hear witness testimony and receive other relevant evidence from both parties. In response to Trump’s assertion of civil immunity there, the DC Circuit put in place a lengthy discovery schedule for the lower court to determine the extent of Trump’s civil immunity.

But Congress may not criminalize the President’s conduct in carrying out the responsibilities of the Executive Branch under the Constitution. Juries can’t even consider official acts in terms of a prosecution, according to the Supreme Court. This case poses a question of lasting significance: When may a former President be prosecuted for official acts taken during his Presidency? She said they could easily have expressed that some of Trump’s conduct was unofficial. Sorting private from official conduct sometimes will be difficult—but not always.

CNN —A major Supreme Court ruling Friday that shifted power from the executive branch to the judiciary stands to transform how the federal government works. By overturning a 1984 precedent, the court’s conservative majority has made countless regulations vulnerable to legal challenge. The Supreme Court ruling could boost efforts by conservatives who have taken aim at the Biden Environmental Protection Agency’s rules limiting planet-warming pollution from vehicles, oil and gas wells and pipelines, and power plants. The ruling has injected legal uncertainty into regulations of all types, including those on technology, labor, the environment and health care. But the Supreme Court has yet to decide a case heard this term that might gut that limitation.

CNN —As the conservative Supreme Court majority has won case after case in recent days, liberal dissenters are having their moment in the courtroom. Other justices stared out at spectators or down at notes, perhaps anticipating the next opinions, and dissents, to be revealed. Her oral dissent lasted nearly 15 minutes, about five minutes longer than Roberts’ rendition of the majority opinion. On Friday, legal experts told Business Insider that the decision was good news for Trump's legal prospects. It could remind voters unhappy with the Supreme Court's conservative drift that another Trump term could mean more Trump SCOTUS appointees. Undecided voters with strong opinions on abortion and January 6 could be turned off by Trump's Supreme Court appointees and their increasingly conservative rulings, he suggested.
