Monthlong heat waves. AdvertisementLocal climate hazardsTo make predictions at a city level, Mackres said WRI built on global climate modeling done by hundreds of other researchers. World Resources InstituteIn Bengaluru, India's fifth-most-populous city, extreme heat has caused severe water shortages and surging energy demand. Now it ranks second behind San Francisco after a series of deadly heat waves prompted residents to install AC. If that demand is met with fossil fuels like oil, gas, and coal, it could exacerbate the climate crisis, WRI said.

CNN —Donald Trump’s obsession with election fraud that doesn’t exist in any significant form could drive the country into a government shutdown — and may even put the Republican House majority at risk. But given the tiny House GOP majority and Trump’s looming presence, every step the speaker takes will be perilous – especially if he hopes to cling to his job if Republicans succeed in holding the House in November. Oil prices fall as U.S. rate cut fails to boost market sentiment

A pump jack operates in front of a drilling rig at sunset in an oil field in Midland, Texas. Oil prices fell in Asian trading on Thursday after a larger-than-expected Federal Reserve interest rate cut sparked concerns about the U.S. economy. The U.S. central bank cut interest rates by half a percentage point on Wednesday, suggesting the Fed saw a slowing job market. That view appeared to outweigh the boost that interest rate cuts usually bring to economic activity. China's industrial output growth also slowed to a five-month low last month, and retail sales and new home prices weakened further.

But the latest provisional data shows that overdose deaths made a sharp turn at the end of last year and have been trending down for months. There were about 101,000 overdose deaths in the year ending in April, CDC estimates. Overdose deaths involving fentanyl and other synthetic opioids are down 20% year-over-year, CDC data shows. These drugs are now involved in about two-thirds of all fatal overdoses, down from more than three-quarters of all overdose deaths a year ago. “We’ve been riding a better than 20-year peak in terms of the continuous increases of drug overdoses,” Pamplin said.

“Given that sleep is highly visible as a risk factor, non-stigmatizing, and highly treatable … we suggest study of sleep as a risk factor and critical intervention target for youth suicide,” said senior study author Dr. Rebecca Bernert, a suicidologist and founder of the Stanford Suicide Prevention Research Laboratory in California, via email. Suicide is a leading cause of death among children ages 10 to 14, a group that also has high rates of sleep disturbance, according to the study. And sleep disturbances “have emerged as an evidence-based risk factor for suicidal behaviors” among adults, regardless of whether a person has depressive symptoms, the authors said. At that time, guardians answered questionnaires about their child’s sleep health, which included factors such as problems with falling or staying asleep, waking up, excessive sleepiness, sleep-disorder breathing, excessive sweating during sleep, and behaviors that occur when someone partially awakes from deep sleep. Supporting your child’s healthAt all ages, your kids need good nighttime habits that support healthy sleep, Willard said.

Federal Reserve Chair Jerome Powell has unveiled his latest buzzword to describe monetary policy, with a "recalibration" of policy at a pivotal moment for the central bank. "This recalibration of our policy stance will help maintain the strength of the economy and the labor market, and will continue to enable further progress on inflation as we begin the process of moving forward a more neutral stance," Powell said. Financial markets weren't quite sure what to make of the chair's messaging in the meeting's immediate aftermath. However, asset prices soared Thursday as investors took Powell at his word that the unusually outsized move wasn't in response to a substantial slowing of the economy. The Dow Jones Industrial Average and S&P 500 jumped to new highs in trading Thursday after swinging violently Wednesday.

CNN —Former President Donald Trump said Thursday that “the Jewish people” would be partially to blame if he loses in November, escalating his persistent campaign trail criticism of Jewish voters and insisting that Democrats hold a “curse” over them. But the former president appeared preoccupied with what he described as ingratitude from Jewish voters, whom he said should be supporting him in greater proportions because of his record on Israel. Still, Trump has repeatedly cast his rival as “anti-Israel” and “anti-Jewish.”“You have to defeat Kamala Harris more than any other people on earth,” Trump said, addressing the Jewish voters in the audience. You want to control your politicians, that’s fine,” Trump said at the Republican Jewish Coalition in December 2015. “I’m a negotiator like you folks, we are negotiators.”But Trump’s open frustration with Jewish voters became a more frequent theme in the aftermath of his 2020 election defeat.

His new home is a notorious federal jail in New York City known for extreme violence and abominable medical care. Still, the conditions are horrid across the facility, according to interviews with more than a half-dozen defense lawyers and a review of court documents. “The agency as a whole has failed to assist MDC Brooklyn with the staffing crisis, hence allowing MDC Brooklyn to fail,” the union head, Rhonda Barnwell, wrote in a memo to Bureau of Prisons officials in June 2023. "That is why, earlier this year, the director appointed an Urgent Action Team to take a holistic look at the challenges at MDC Brooklyn," the spokesman added. A statute in the federal court system requires defendants who are out on bail to be remanded to jail after they are convicted.

In today’s edition, we explore one positive and on negative development for Kamala Harris' support from organized labor. The influential Teamsters union on Wednesday declined to issue an endorsement in the presidential race, Megan Lebowitz and Alexandra Marquez report. Prior to the announcement, the Teamsters also released survey data showing more rank-and-file members preferred to endorse Trump than Harris. Still, Harris has won the endorsement of just about every other major labor union in the country (the International Association of Fire Fighters remains a notable holdout). Instead, the Trump campaign appears to be approaching this apparent assassination attempt as an opportunity rather than as a moment to reflect.
