Here's a breakdown of how Super Micro got to this point, and where investors and analysts expect it to go. What to know about Super Micro Computer Creating servers isn't a new objective for the California-based company. Other shareholders such as Vendig have opted to take a breather on buying shares until the next earnings call. Those headwinds may not hit until 2025 but could hurt the stock if Super Micro fails to differentiate itself. "Super Micro was in the right place at the right time when generative AI took off, there really wasn't a competitor," he said.

The demand for Nvidia's AI chips could bolster job growth across the semiconductor industry. It could also help bring more semiconductor chip manufacturing stateside and reduce the US's reliance on Taiwan — which remains vulnerable to Chinese invasion that would wreak havoc on the global economy. AdvertisementEven without the AI boom, the semiconductor industry was already poised for big job gains in the near future. Of the 115,000 US new semiconductor jobs the Semiconductor Industry Association is projecting by 2030, it said roughly 67,000 of these positions risk going unfilled given current college degree completion rates. In an effort to prevent a worker shortage, community colleges and universities across the country have partnered with semiconductor companies.

In the last 15 months, Wall Street analysts have hailed generative AI as the most impactful innovation in decades and compared its theoretical impact to that of the internet. Washington, DC CNN —Americans racked up a record amount of credit card debt in 2023, soaring past a trillion dollars. “Consumers still have a lot of money left over to be able to spend, so the credit card data is often misinterpreted,” Russell Price, chief economist at Ameriprise Financial, told CNN. According to a LendingTree analysis of more than 350,000 credit reports, the average unpaid credit card balance was $6,864 in the fourth quarter. Overall, US household debt (including credit card balances) rose to a new high of $17.5 trillion in the fourth quarter, up 1.2% from the prior three-month period. So, while there certainly isn’t a shortage of economic hurdles bedeviling people’s budget — and credit card debt has surged — the big picture indicates that, so far, Americans (and their economy) remain healthy.

Other companies also listed as its rivals in some areas include AMD, Amazon (AMZN), Microsoft (MSFT) and Broadcom (AVGO). In October 2022, the Biden administration imposed sweeping curbs designed to curtail China’s access to advanced computing chips. In July, it imposed export controls on two strategic raw materials, gallium and germanium, that are critical to the global chipmaking industry. New York CNN —US stocks soared higher on Thursday morning after a strong earnings report from tech giant Nvidia bolstered investor optimism on Wall Street. The S&P 500 hit a record high during morning trading on the pop in big tech and the Nasdaq is tracking towards a new all-time high as well. Nvidia (NVDA), one of the largest companies on Wall Street, led gains after reporting extraordinary earnings growth, fueled by the artificial intelligence boom. Profits of the chipmaker grew to nearly $12.3 billion in the three months ended January 28 — up from $1.4 billion in the year-ago quarter, a gain of 769% year-over-year and even stronger growth than Wall Street analysts had expected. Shares of the stock were 15.3% higher in morning trading, a reversal from earlier in the week when the company logged its worst day since October.

CNN —Nvidia CEO Jensen Huang’s wealth saw a major boost on Thursday as the company he cofounded in 1993 surged in value. Huang, 61, is now worth an estimated $68.1 billion, passing Charles Koch and rapidly gaining on members of the Walton family, who own Walmart, which has a roughly $471 billion market cap. Huang has been at the helm of Nvidia since its beginning, serving as co-founder, CEO, president and board member. Shares of AMD (AMD) were 11% higher on Thursday and Microsoft (MSFT) rose 2%. But the company’s soaring stock price over the past year — shares grew around 230% in 2023 — means Nvidia is now deeply important to the broader market, too.

AI boom drove Nvidia profits up 580% last year

That result helped bring the company’s full-year profits up more than 580% from the year earlier. Nvidia also posted fourth quarter revenue gains of 265% year-over-year, also exceeding analyst projections, as the company continues to ride the wave of massive AI investment. And US restrictions introduced last year on exports of advanced AI chips to China, which affected products like Nvidia’s H800 and A800 chips, threaten to choke off access to a massive and fast-growing market. Still, others on Wall Street believe the company still has plenty of room to run. “The outlook for Nvidia is positive as AI chip competition from Intel, AMD, Meta and Microsoft could be months away while demand for Nvidia chips is only surging,” Insider Intelligence senior analyst Gadjo Sevilla said in a note earlier this week.
