A police officer and a suspected shooter were injured Tuesday after gunfire erupted at a Midtown Atlanta building occupied by a Four Seasons hotel and residences, authorities said. The officer was hospitalized with non-life-threatening injuries, Atlanta Police Chief Darin Schierbaum said at a news conference. Police responded to the high rise after 10 a.m. following a dispute between a Four Seasons worker and the man on the 33rd floor, which is occupied by residences, Schierbaum said. The Four Seasons hotel takes up 19 of 53 stories of the high rise and occupies 244 rooms, 23 of which are designated suites. A California judge on Tuesday sentenced David DePape, the man who broke into former House Speaker Nancy Pelosi’s home and attacked her husband with a hammer, to life behind bars without the possibility of parole. DePape had previously been sentenced to 30 years in prison for federal crimes connected to the Oct. 28, 2022, attack in the upscale Pacific Heights neighborhood of San Francisco. San Francisco District Attorney Brooke Jenkins said DePape is "now being held accountable" for acts that are a "danger to democracy." "Mr. DePape has been convicted of crimes both federally and locally reflecting the public's unanimous condemnation," Jenkins said in statement after Tuesday's sentencing. "Recognizing the seriousness of his crimes and the danger to democracy that Mr. DePape posed he is now being held accountable and will spend the rest of his life in prison without the possibility of parole."

(AP) — The federal government is handing out $2.4 billion in railroad grants to help pay for 122 projects nationwide with more than half of the money going to smaller railroads. The grants announced Tuesday by the Federal Railroad Administration will go to projects across 41 states and Washington, D.C. Last year, the administration handed out $1.4 billion in these rail grants. But the majority of the money — nearly $1.3 billion — will go to 81 projects at smaller short line railroads across the country. Chuck Baker, president of the American Short Line and Regional Railroad Association trade group, said the grants will help those smaller railroads significantly.

CNN —A small number of North Korean troops are already inside Ukraine, according to two western intelligence officials, and officials expect that number to grow as the North Koreans complete training in eastern Russia and move toward the front lines of the war. The North Korean troops’ presence inside Ukraine goes a step beyond what NATO and the Pentagon confirmed on Monday, which is that roughly 10,000 North Korean troops are training in eastern Russia with some en route to Russia’s Kursk region. John Herbert Sawchak, 54, was arrested in connection with allegedly shooting his neighbor, Davis Moturi, 34, in the neck on Oct. 23. The arrest came as police admitted they had failed Moturi by failing to prevent Sawchack's ongoing harassment, following a number of complaints. “But I will say this, we had no reason to suspect that he would shoot the neighbor from inside the house,” O’Hara added. O'Hara said that the shooting was caused by Moturi cutting a tree that had been planted by the suspect and his mother. He was charged last week in Hennepin County with attempted murder, first-degree assault and felony harassment and stalking, enhanced for racial bias in connection with the Moturi shooting.
