Related storiesExactly how overloaded the Russian rail network may be isn't clear. Despite the humiliation of foreign troops occupying Russian soil, Russian forces continue to grind forward in bloody attacks at places such as Pokrovsk, in the Donetsk region. Relying on trucks would require an extraordinary number of vehicles, so it seems likely that Russian forces at Kursk will require multiple railheads that depend on a limited number of railroad bridges. However, Ukraine has captured data about the Russian railway system, which will make it easier to disrupt operations, Fraser noted. Barros believes that Ukraine could seriously disrupt Russian rail traffic and logistics if the US would lift those restrictions.

Recent reports have said that the US is deciding whether to transfer AGM-158 Joint Air-to-Surface Standoff Missiles, or JASSMs, to Ukraine. These high-profile weapons would give Kyiv a significantly farther strike range than any other Western munitions it has in its arsenal. As is, it still restricts the country from using its powerful US-provided tactical ballistic missiles to strike military targets inside Russia. A US Air Force F-16 before releasing a Joint Air-to-Surface Standoff Missile. Pavel Durov, chief executive officer of Telegram, at the Mobile World Congress in Barcelona, Spain, on Tuesday, Feb. 23, 2016. The boss of messaging platform Telegram said late Thursday that charges against him by France are "misguided," in his first public comments since being detained in the country nearly two weeks ago. He cannot leave French territory and has to report twice weekly to a police station, prosecutors said last week. In his first public comments on the situation, Durov said Thursday that France's decision to detain and charge him was based on a "misguided approach. "Using laws from the pre-smartphone era to charge a CEO with crimes committed by third parties on the platform he manages is a misguided approach."

Dow falls by more than 600 points as September turns ugly
  + stars: | 2024-09-03 | by ( Lucy Bayly | ) edition.cnn.com   time to read: +3 min
New York CNN —Wall Street kicked off the month of September with a bust, after a disappointing economic report dragged down the Dow by 626 points, or 1.5%, Tuesday afternoon. Traders were already jittery ahead of a big month of economic news, from Friday’s key jobs report to next week’s inflation readings and then the long-awaited rate cut from the Fed mid-month. Investors were reacting to a weaker-than-expected jobs report that underscored fears that the Fed had mishandled inflation and pushed the economy right into a recession. Friday’s jobs report is arguably the most important piece of economic data that central bank officials will have to parse before their monetary policy meeting on September 17-18. International benchmark Brent fell to $73.70 a barrel and US benchmark West Texas Intermediate closed at just above $70 a barrel.

U.S. factories remained in slowdown mode in August, fueling fears about where the economy is headed, according to separate manufacturing gauges. Demand continues to be weak, output declined, and inputs stayed accommodative," said Timothy Fiore, chair of the ISM Manufacturing Business Survey Committee. While the index level suggests contraction in the manufacturing sector, Fiore pointed out that any reading above 42.5% generally points to expansion across the broader economy. Another weak economic reading raises the probability the Federal Reserve will be cutting interest rates by at least a quarter percentage point later this month. "A further downward lurch in the PMI points to the manufacturing sector acting as an increased drag on the economy midway through the third quarter.

Brazil's supreme court on Friday ordered a nationwide suspension of Elon Musk's social network X after the company vowed to defy earlier court orders concerning content moderation and the appointment of a legal representative in the country. Hours later, the court issued a second order suspending some of the measures in its first 51-page order against X. A suspension of X in Brazil could cause business problems for Musk's already embattled company. Musk has repeatedly denounced de Moraes' court orders as censorship. In its Thursday statement, X said de Moraes court had taken "illegal actions" against the company.

A somber atmosphere pervades Ukraine’s 33rd Independence Day Saturday, as the nation’s war against Russia’s aggression reaches a 30-month milestone. No fireworks, parades or concerts are planned and instead Ukrainians will mark the day with commemorations for civilians and soldiers killed in the war. “Independence is the silence we experience when we lose our people,” President Volodymyr Zelenskyy said to the nation. “913 days ago, Russia launched its war against us, partly through Sumy region,” Zelenskyy said. Pontoon bridges are temporary structures that militaries often build to maintain critical supply lines when permanent structures are damaged or destroyed. NBC News was not able to verify whether the video shows the destruction of a pontoon bridge or when it was shot. Another video shared Thursday by the country’s air force chief, Lt. Gen. Mykola Oleshchuk, claimed to show Ukraine’s use of guided aerial bombs to destroy two “bridge crossings” in Kursk this week. Ukraine claimed responsibility for hitting the depot, which its army’s general staff said stored oil products used to supply the Russian army. Satellite images captured on Monday, the day after the alleged attack, show flames and thick clouds of black smoke billowing from the depot.

At the start of August, Ukraine seemed doomed to remain on the defensive, slowly but relentlessly being ground into retreat by Russian onslaughts. But its successful new Kursk offensive has done more than seize 480 square miles of Russian territory and humiliate Putin. After nearly a year of a grim defensive battle, the Kursk operation has also allowed Ukraine to seize the initiative and force Moscow to dance to Kyiv's tune. The Russians no longer hold the initiative across the entirety of the theater, like they have for most of last year." Which means Ukraine has to find some economical way of keeping up the pressure on Russia, without losing more territory of its own.

Hezbollah: What weapons does it have? A visual guide

Though no match for Israel’s military might, Hezbollah’s increasingly sophisticated arsenal has the potential to inflict significant damage on Israel and its allies in the region. As it fought in the trenches of that nearly decade-long war, Hezbollah became seasoned in urban warfare and solidified its alliances with other Iran-backed groups fighting in Syria. Throughout its decades-long conflict with Israel, Hezbollah has been engaged in asymmetric warfare. It has sought to grow its political and military might, while seeking to establish deterrence despite Israel’s military superiority. Because of Hezbollah’s growing power, a possible all-out war between Israel and Lebanon would thrust the Middle East into uncharted waters.
