But Hong Kong police say the men had fallen prey to a romance scam that used deepfake artificial intelligence to lure its victims into parting with more than $46 million. In a news conference Monday, police in the Asian financial hub announced the arrests of more than two dozen members of the alleged scam ring, which they say targeted men from Taiwan to Singapore and as far away as India. But increasingly realistic deepfake technology has raised the stakes and put authorities on high alert. According to Hong Kong police, the romance gang’s deepfake scam typically began with a text message, in which the sender – posing as an attractive woman – said they had mistakenly added the wrong number.

The Israeli military has launched a series of deadly strikes in the Gaza Strip over the past 24 hours, including on a flour distribution center, a school and a hospital where displaced Palestinians were sheltering. Video of a fire at a tent camp Sunday that started after Israeli forces launched an airstrike on Al-Aqsa Martyrs Hospital in central Gaza's Deir al-Balah showed harrowing scenes. In multiple videos shared on social media and verified by NBC News, at least one person could be seen reaching their hands out from the flames as they were burned alive. Others could be seen racing from the fire, some carrying the injured, while others ran toward the blaze to help. At least four people were killed in the strike and its fiery aftermath, with dozens more injured, including women and children, local health officials said.

Women's rights activist Lilly Ledbetter has died, according to a family representative. Ledbetter, best known for advocating for equal pay for women, died as a result of respiratory failure on Saturday night. The Lilly Ledbetter Fair Pay Act became the first bill Barack Obama signed into law as president in 2009.
