Federal Reserve Board Chairman Jerome Powell holds a press conference following a two-day meeting of the Federal Open Market Committee on interest rate policy in Washington, U.S., September 18, 2024. REUTERS/Tom BrennerFalling interest rates are usually good news for banks, especially when the cuts aren't a harbinger of recession. That's because lower rates will slow the migration of money that's happened over the past two years as customers shifted cash out of checking accounts and into higher-yielding options like CDs and money market funds. When the Federal Reserve cut its benchmark rate by half a percentage point last month, it signaled a turning point in its stewardship of the economy and telegraphed its intention to cut rates by another two full percentage points, according to the central bank's projections, boosting prospects for banks. The bank is expected to report $4.01 per share in earnings, a 7.4% drop from the year-earlier period.

As Hurricane Milton hit, TikTok was filled with live streams from people in Florida. But even though there were plenty of live videos, it was hard to follow for breaking news. As night fell and power outages swept the coast, I watched live streams of palm trees swaying in the dark rain. And indeed, TikTok found controversy for Hurricane Milton. That was far different from on X, which previously used to be the best place to get live news.

Airports are looking to private wireless networks to improve operations, execs said at MWC Las Vegas. Private wireless networks are key to ushering in a better airport experience for both the travel hubs' operations and the billions of passengers who pass through them. Private networks generally offer greater security and reliability, lower latency, and higher bandwidth compared with public networks. "As I think about a future with a lot of growth, private wireless is foundational. Private wireless networks can also help enterprises with cost and mobility by reducing the expense of installing cables and by providing connectivity to areas that might be harder to reach with wires.

Earnings season is getting underway with JPMorgan Chase on Friday, but don't expect its third-quarter results to turn the market around. So far this year, the investment bank has not started the season off upbeat, as shares have fallen in every postearnings trading session. However, he also noted that net interest income may be under pressure. "NII should be modestly lower in the quarter, due to some [net interest margin] compression," he wrote in a note to clients Wednesday. "In addition, results should be impacted by seasonally lower trading activity (flat to up 2% y-o-y) while asset quality continues to normalize."

A business class ticket can cost up to five times more than an economy ticket on Singapore Airlines — and a whopping 13 times more for a first-class one. A business class ticket jumps to SG$6,300, and a first-class ticket just over SG$13,000. Aaron Wong, who flies first and business class when he travels, says: "You don't need to be rich to enjoy such things." However, it's not as simple as just picking up any mile-earning credit card and spending a bunch of money, he said. For example, in Singapore, points earned on DBS credit cards can be combined, but credit cards from Citibank Singapore don't work that way.

My homeowner nightmare

The moment I saw I had an email from my solar company, I knew my nightmare was about to take another unsettling turn. But he didn't know any more than I did about how much longer my solar panels would remain useless. Meanwhile, my solar panels have been sitting on my roof for four months, entirely unused, taunting me from above. AdvertisementI also reached out to California's Contractors State License Board, which regulates solar companies, asking what recourse SunPower's customers had. But it seems ludicrous to buy a solar system that I had no intention of buying in the first place.

Combs was charged last month with sex trafficking, racketeering and transportation to engage in prostitution in a sweeping indictment by the Southern District of New York. Combs' preference was mentioned in a joint letter from his lawyers and prosecutors. It should put a damper on just how much we should expect the next president to accomplish, especially if the divide is between the House and the White House. There’s a big difference in just how divided government becomes, depending on whether the House and the White House are controlled by the same party or different parties. Two words send chills down the spine of any presidents who find the “other” party in control of the House: subpoena power. Both Trump and Joe Biden saw the second halves of their terms (after they lost control of the House) essentially paralyzed by an oppositional House. First, because California House races will determine overall House control, it could take as much as two or three weeks before we know the makeup of Congress in 2025 for sure.
