European markets are heading for a mixed open Tuesday as regional sentiment sours further after a shaky start to the week, with investors watching the conflict in the Middle East closely and its potential impact on oil markets, supply chains and the global economy. Elsewhere overnight, U.S. stock futures were little changed following a losing day on Wall Street Monday as rising oil prices and bond yields weighed on markets. In the Asia-Pacific region, an initial rally for Chinese markets lost steam after a briefing from the country's National Development and Reform Commission provided few details on further stimulus. Earlier, mainland China's CSI 300 index had skyrocketed over 10% at the open at its return from the Golden Week holiday, but the index pared gains later in the session. Key releases for markets this week include U.S. Federal Reserve minutes and German trade on Wednesday, U.S. inflation on Thursday and U.K. economic growth on Friday.

U.S. crude oil rose about 2% on Monday, as the market waited for Israel to strike Iran. Oil prices spiked last week on fears that Israel could hit Iran's oil industry in retaliation for Tehran's ballistic missile attack. The impact on the oil market would be significant if Israel struck Kharg Island, through which 90% of Iran's crude exports pass, Croft said. The worst-case scenario is a disruption in the Strait of Hormuz, through which 20% of the world's crude exports flow, Gelder said. Iran might target the strait in response to an Israeli strike, which would have a far more dramatic effect on crude prices, the analyst said.

The terror attack has helped push the Middle East to the brink of a wider regional war. Propelled by US incentives, Saudi Arabia and Israel seemed closer than ever to a historic normalization of relations. Israel's Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu is unwilling to be a partner in a deal that would resow Middle East relations. CNN —Dubai’s Emirates airline has banned pagers and walkie-talkies from its planes, following last month’s attacks on such devices carried by the Lebanese militant group Hezbollah. It comes weeks after pagers exploded simultaneously across Lebanon, followed by walkie-talkies detonating in a similar fashion. At least 37 people, including children, were killed in the twin device attacks, and nearly 3,000 others were injured, according to Lebanese officials. In its latest update Friday, Emirates, the region’s largest airline, said flights from and to Lebanon’s capital, Beirut, remain canceled up until and including October 15. Several other airlines have also canceled flights to Beirut and other regional airports.

New York CNN —False claims about the federal response to the historic devastation left by Hurricane Helene are spreading out of control on social media, hampering recovery efforts in hard-hit areas, according to local officials. Elon Musk, the X owner who has endorsed Trump, has repeatedly posted rumors and innuendo denigrating the federal government’s response to Helene. Most of the misinformation is brazenly political, portraying President Joe Biden and Harris as incompetent in an attempt to help Trump win reelection. Some of the most-shared lies on social media have involved FEMA’s response. “Republican elected officials keep rebutting the BS, and MAGA does not care,” conservative columnist David French said in a social media post Saturday.

The (Donald) Trump campaign, on the other hand, is looking to the Sun Belt. Instead of knocking on doors in key states, Trump’s allies are using funding from tech billionaire Elon Musk to do some nontraditional things. But some things are still going to be much more expensive on Election Day than they were when Trump was president. It’s one month to Election Day, but that’s a little bit of a misnomer. No matter what happens with the 2024 election, Trump is unlikely to accept the results if Harris wins.

A soccer team consisting entirely of transgender men has made its debut in a regional league in Spain, overcoming administrative challenges and prejudice to become the first all-trans squad to achieve federated status in Europe. Spain passed a pioneering trans rights bill last year designed to make it easier to change a person’s legal gender identity. Hugo Martinez, 24, told Reuters he faced abuse when he began transitioning with gender-affirming hormone therapy and was forced to leave the women’s soccer team in which he had played. The experience prompted Martinez to put out a call online for other trans men seeking to play soccer in a safe environment. But for its fans and players, trans men having the right to play their favorite sport on equal terms is far more important than the score.

SEOUL, South Korea — North Korean leader Kim Jong Un said the country would not hesitate to use all available offensive forces including nuclear weapons if the enemy attempted to use force to encroach on its sovereignty, state news agency KCNA reported Friday. Kim criticized South Korean President Yoon Suk Yeol for threatening to end the North Korean regime at a military day event on Tuesday, saying the comment showed which side was destroying regional security and peace. DPRK is short for the Democratic People’s Republic of Korea, North Korea’s official name. North Korea has for decades pursued a nuclear weapons program and is believed to have enough fissile materials to build dozens of such weapons. Kim said “the enemies’ threatening rhetoric, action, trick and attempt did not check the DPRK’s powerful military strength and will not take away our nuclear weapons forever,” KCNA reported.

Outside of the ABC27 news station where Casey and McCormick debated, a slew of people aligned with Casey’s campaign held signs calling McCormick an out-of-state candidate. President Joe Biden welcomed the deal, saying it would secure the effective operation of Diego Garcia, a strategically important air base in the Indian Ocean, into the next century. But critics in Britain said it was a capitulation that played into the hands of China, which has close trade ties with Mauritius. Britain, which has controlled the region since 1814, detached the Chagos Islands in 1965 from Mauritius — a former colony that became independent three years later — to create the British Indian Ocean Territory. The new agreement said Mauritius would be free to implement a program of resettlement on the islands other than Diego Garcia, with the terms left for Port Louis to decide. David Blagden, associate professor of international security and strategy at Britain’s University of Exeter, said the deal was a “big win” for Mauritius.
