J&J carves itself up at a discount
  + stars: | 2023-04-24 | by ( Robert Cyran | ) www.reuters.com   time to read: +4 min
NEW YORK, April 24 (Reuters Breakingviews) - Johnson & Johnson (JNJ.N) is paying a price to dismember itself. That’s nearly a 20% discount to rival Haleon (HLN.L), the consumer business spun off from GSK (GSK.L) last year. The drug and surgical businesses remaining with J&J are higher margin and potentially faster-growing, so perhaps the two firms will appeal to different sets of investors. Even the unknown at the former J&J company is better than the unknown elsewhere. Johnson & Johnson is in the midst of trying to settle tens of thousands of lawsuits that its talc-based products caused cancer.
But recent data and upbeat comments from major companies like LVMH (LVMH.PA), Europe's most valuable listed company, about business in China have given investors some cause for optimism. Refinitiv I/B/E/S data points to a 2.5% decline in earnings growth in the first quarter for STOXX 600 (.STOXX) companies, down from a forecast for 5.4% growth prior to the banking chaos. Europe is headed for a recession too, the data shows, with a drop in earnings of 5.4% expected in the second quarter. But stubbornly high inflation means major central banks are expected to continue to hike rates, at least in May. European financials are expected to report first-quarter earnings growth of 31%, according to Refinitiv.
"Simply stated we're in a freight recession." That line, uttered last Monday by Shelley Simpson, president of J.B. Hunt (JBHT), the fourth-largest trucking company in the United States, was the most memorable of the real first week of earnings season. If so, it would know that we're dealing with much more than a freight recession. It's not enough to offset the immense deflationary pressure emanating from the regional banks and the freight recession described by J.B. Hunt. The benchmark S&P 500 has been generally stable over early stages of a first-quarter earnings season that investors expect to show tepid results. For the week, the S&P 500 slipped 0.1%, the Dow dipped 0.2% and the Nasdaq lost 0.4%. Amazon shares rose 3% on Friday after a research firm predicted the online retailer's business in North America would beat Wall Street's estimates. The $356 billion company said on Friday that sales grew 4% year-over-year to $20 billion in the three months ended March 31. That growth was led by a 10% price hike for the second consecutive quarter, while also growing market share in the United States. P&G warned of higher commodities and packaging costs, as well as wage inflation. P&G is proving that the cushy Charmin double roll is irreplaceable. A look at the day ahead in U.S. and global markets from Mike DolanThe signal is still lost in an awful lot of noise. With next week's Big Tech earnings reports hoving into view, the overall U.S. corporate healthcheck remains pretty mixed. Perhaps unsurprisingly, the overall global stock market direction remains equivocal. Although Asia bourses had initially followed Wall St's Thursday swoon, European indexes and S&P500 futures were little changed on Friday. Stock futures are hovering ahead of earnings from Procter & Gamble before markets open. The three major U.S. indexes were poised for weekly losses as of Thursday's close. What we're reading:
P&G's strong quarter shines as Wall Street wraps up a muted weekJim Cramer on Friday analyzed the stock moves from Club holdings Amazon (AMZN) and Procter & Gamble (PG). He also looked ahead next week's busy earnings slate.
Johnson & Johnson (JNJ) and Costco Wholesale (COST) became the latest Club holdings to hike their payouts this week, bringing the year-to-date total to 11. Cisco Systems (CSCO), meanwhile, raised its dividend by a more modest 2.6%, to 39 cents a share, from 38 cents. Here is the full list of the Club stocks that have raised their dividends this year. In the case of these 11 Club holdings, the dividend increases are favorable developments, even if the magnitude varies from company to company. It is no surprise Johnson & Johnson, Procter & Gamble (PG) — which delivered a quarterly earnings beat Friday — and Linde (LIN) have raised their dividend already this year.
Club holding Procter & Gamble (PG) reported fiscal third-quarter results that were better than expectations before the opening bell Friday. The fact that volumes were only down 3%, despite a 10% price increase, is a testament to Procter & Gamble's strong pricing power. This new target comes as management now expects all-in (non-organic) sales growth to be up 1%, an increase from the down 1% to flat range previously provided. Shares of the company rose more than 1% in premarket trading. Net sales rose 4% to $20.07 billion.
Procter & Gamble, a consumer goods bellwether, said that its profit grew in the first three months of the year after it raised prices 10 percent across its brands, the second consecutive quarterly double-digit increase. The company’s profit margin expanded in the quarter, with price increases more than offsetting the rise in what it paid for raw materials. In other words, Procter & Gamble made more money even though it sold fewer products. Sales volumes at the company have declined for the past four quarters. Jon Moeller, Procter & Gamble’s chief executive, said in a statement that the company delivered strong results “in what continues to be a very difficult cost and operating environment.”
Market Movers rounded up the best reactions from investors and analysts on Procter & Gamble 's quarterly results. The experts, including Jim Cramer , discussed the consumer staples stock as its shares jumped more than 3% Friday. Procter & Gamble posted fiscal third-quarter earnings that beat earnings and revenue expectations. The company also raised its fiscal 2023 sales guidance.
SummarySummary Companies P&G beats sales estimates for 12th quarterHiked prices in U.S., Europe again in Jan-MarchShares up 2% premarketApril 21 (Reuters) - Procter & Gamble Co's (PG.N) customers continued to show little resistance to repeated price hikes, helping the Tide detergent maker boost its annual sales forecast and third-quarter margins. But shrinking consumer wallets in the face of high inflation have fanned concerns of how much longer rising prices will be tolerated before triggering a switch to cheaper, private-label brands. The fabric and home-care unit, P&G's biggest segment, saw sales volumes fall 5%, with average price rising to 13%. The company expects fiscal 2023 organic sales growth of about 6%, compared with its previous forecast for a 4% to 5% increase. P&G maintained its annual earnings forecast of flat to a 4% rise.
