The longtime elected coroner in Hinds County, Mississippi, who faced withering criticism last year for burying men in pauper's graves without notifying their families, is stepping down early. Sharon Grisham-Stewart, a Democrat, announced Monday that she would retire Dec. 31, three years before the end of her current term. The mother of one of those men, Jonathan Hankins, confronted Grisham-Stewart in February at the county's pauper's field. And the Justice Department stepped in, saying it would help authorities in Hinds County and Jackson improve their death notification procedures. Grisham-Stewart was first elected as Hinds County coroner in 1999 and last won re-election in 2023.

Sure, many small businesses aren't glamorous — think dental practices or accounting firms — and they involve long hours and unpredictable market forces. The US Small Business Administration said in July that there were nearly 35 million small businesses in the US. Fewer than two-thirds of small businesses in the US in 2022 were profitable, and over a million businesses of all sizes close each year. Traditionally, small businesses were family businesses, and the eldest male child was expected to take it over when the patriarch was ready to step down. Buying up small businesses allows people without wealthy boomer parents to cash in on the trillions of dollars of wealth the generation is sitting on.

Israel’s recent attacks on Hezbollah expose weaknesses in Iran’s proxy strategy. Israel’s attacks on Hezbollah exposes weaknesses in Iran’s ‘axis of resistance’In a matter of weeks, Israel has dealt devastating blows to Iran’s most important proxy, Hezbollah. But Iran’s strategy underestimated how Israel would respond to the Hamas terrorist attack of Oct. 7 and subsequent cross-border rocket fire from Hezbollah. “Israeli intelligence has restored their aura of deterrence," Hoffman said. However, Yahyah Sinwar, the leader of Hamas, is believed to be alive and hiding in tunnels that Israeli forces have not yet seized. The successful Israeli operations have also forced Iran and Hezbollah to face a vexing question: how and when to retaliate without suffering yet more setbacks? Past debate footage reveals that both generally veer away from personal attacks and prefer loftier rhetoric to digging deeply into specific facts to establish policy credibility. Their past debate opponents said they didn’t always provide direct answers to questions. Israel’s killing of Hezbollah’s longtime leader has driven home how Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has set the agenda in the Middle East in recent months, with a frustrated Biden White House unable to shape events or defuse a spreading conflict in the region. Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu addresses the 79th session of the United Nations General Assembly on September 27, 2024. “It’s welcome,” one senior administration official told CNN after both the Israel Defense Forces and Hezbollah confirmed Nasrallah’s death. But Hezbollah has been “decimated,” and Iran — which backs the militant group — has also been “much weakened,” the official said. Angry senior US officials were convinced that Netanyahu was reacting to backlash at home from far-right members of his government. Israeli officials, meanwhile, attributed the confusion to a “miscommunication.”Whatever the case, by Friday any talk of an imminent ceasefire had quieted as Israeli warplanes dropped bombs on Hezbollah’s headquarters in Beirut.
