Third-party agents selling and supporting CrowdStrike software and the complicated repairs for customers have been a miserably busy bunch over the past week. CrowdStrike’s token of appreciation for those vendors: a $10 Uber Eats voucher. But a $10 Uber Eats voucher should make it all better, right? The ironic part is, at least where I’m located, I can’t even get a pizza for $10 on Uber Eats after taxes and fees. But the software giant has yet to dole out a nickel to them for their troubles — not even a $10 Uber Eats voucher.

New York CNN —The right-wing media machine is throwing everything but the kitchen sink at Kamala Harris. In most of corporate America, even calling someone a “DEI” candidate would be grounds for stiff disciplinary action, if not outright dismissal. Which narrative Trump’s media allies settle on remains to be seen. That’s how right-wing media confronted Obama in 2008. What, are they just going to say if you’re not a white male, it’s a DEI candidate?” moderate Republican Sen. Lisa Murkowski said.

New York CNN —The stark political reality facing President Joe Biden, prompting his unprecedented decision to exit the 2024 race, might look different had he enjoyed the support of a blindly loyal, propagandistic news media. GET RELIABLE SOURCES IN YOUR INBOX A daily digest chronicling the evolving media landscape with uncompromising reporting and analysis. “There has been so much consternation about the fight in the party but also the media coverage of the fight,” Maddow acknowledged Sunday. Contrast how the news media covered Biden’s woes with how the MAGA Media has treated Trump in recent years. But that was not the case for Biden, underscoring the ethical reality that flows through the news media and largely extends to progressive personalities.

Netanyahu has known President Joe Biden for decades, but Biden doubts Netanyahu’s sincerity. Netanyahu earned the undying enmity of former President Barack Obama for trying to tank the Iran nuclear deal. Trump turned opposition to the Iran nuclear deal into a major campaign issue in 2016. Despite his long relationship with Netanyahu, Biden has criticized the Israeli leader’s government for being too right-wing. But for all his criticism of Netanyahu, Biden has continued to provide Israel with weapons and aid, and the two men will meet at the White House.

Nirmala Sitharaman, India's finance minister, leaves the ministry to present the budget at the parliament in New Delhi, India, on July 23, 2024. India's finance ministry on Tuesday lowered the country's fiscal deficit target to 4.9% for the financial year ending March 2025, a revision from 5.1% during the pre-election interim budget published back in February. That target will then fall to 4.5% or lower for the financial year ending March 2026, India's Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman said during the announcements. "This is imperative for attracting foreign investment and sustaining growth," he said, adding that "unprecedented financial support" from the central bank will make the fiscal deficit target possible. "We will endeavor to maintain strong fiscal support for infrastructure over the next five years, in conjunction with imperatives of other priorities and fiscal consolidation."

Can Kamala Harris Finish Biden’s Climate Agenda?
  + stars: | 2024-07-23 | by ( Manuela Andreoni | ) www.nytimes.com   time to read: +1 min
On Sunday, President Biden dropped out of the presidential race, clearing the way for Vice President Kamala Harris to take his place, and it’s now highly likely that she will be running against former President Donald J. Trump in November. Harris, as Lisa Friedman wrote, “has for years made the environment a top concern,” and earlier in her career took positions far to the left of Biden on climate change. This is partly why Harris is widely expected to continue the work Biden started if she is elected. Harris’s climate adviser, Ike Irby, told Friedman that the vice president would focus on implementation of the I.R.A. That may sound underwhelming, but experts told me it’s actually a pretty big challenge and key to hitting the U.S.’s climate goals.

CNN —The ascension of Vice President Kamala Harris to become the presumptive Democratic presidential nominee in less than 48 hours is an unprecedented occurrence in American politics. Only four people in US history have won a presidential election as a sitting vice president. Back then, the vice president was the runner-up in the presidential election. In 1861, Vice President John Breckinridge oversaw the counting of electoral votes that made Abraham Lincoln president, at a time when Southern states seceded from the country rather than accept Lincoln’s 1860 victory. Vice President Richard Nixon narrowly lost the 1960 election to John F. Kennedy and oversaw the counting of electoral votes in 1961.

“So this is going to be incredibly painful for CrowdStrike customers.”And even if your business had nothing to do with CrowdStrike, the outage still might have ruined your day. You didn’t have to be a CrowdStrike customer to get screwed by the company’s mistake, and that’s what made Friday’s outage so frustrating. But the scale of the CrowdStrike outage is once again underscoring just how interconnected the world has become through a network almost none of us understands and which is largely self-regulating. Microsoft estimated the CrowdStrike outage affected some 8.5 million Windows devices. “Our tech platforms have a mix of legacy systems coupled with modern systems, which means that the weakest link determines the overall system performance.

California gets 54 electoral votes (it has two senators and 52 congressional districts). The winner is the candidate who gets 270 or more electoral votes. If no candidate gets to 270 electoral votes, the House of Representatives picks the winner from among the candidates who got electoral votes. The campaigns will focus more attention on the fewer than one-third of all electoral votes they consider to be up for grabs or winnable by either party. Two states, Maine and Nebraska, apportion some of their electoral votes by congressional district rather than giving all of them to the state winner.

There are now 426,330 individuals worth $30 million or more, known as ultra-high-net worth (UHNW) individuals, according to Altrata's World Ultra Wealth Report 2024. Their total wealth surged by 7% to $49 trillion in 2023, helped mainly by the year-end stock rally. In the U.S., the ultra-high-net-worth population increased 13%, to 147,950, meaning the U.S. now accounts for a third of the world's ultra-high-net worth population. Over the next five years, the UHNW population is expected to grow by 38% to 587,650, according to the report. Their combined fortunes will rise by $19 trillion — creating a massive new opportunity for companies that cater to the ultra-wealthy, according to the report.

New York CNN —Corporate America gave social activism a go. And sales of Bud Light have taken a hit ever since. Bud Light didn’t handle fallout well — it capitulated to the angry mob and dropped Mulvaney even as she faced a barrage of threats. It caught fire as right-wing media fueled the swirl of negativity around Bud Light, framing it as “wokeism” gone amok. On Thursday, the Guardian reported that the Bud Light boycott was fueled in part by the right-wing activist Leonard Leo.

But there’s a small, powerful sect of Silicon Valley billionaires who are carving a path for the maybe-Trumpers and the MAGA-curious in the tech world. David Sacks, the billionaire tech investor, co-hosted a fundraiser last month at his San Francisco home and spoke at the Republican National Convention on Monday. In the last election cycle, the few Trump backers that existed in the Valley largely kept their support under the radar. Their numbers are still small, but they’re no longer hiding, and their wallets are open. And, as Kovacevich notes, just because there are a few big names turning toward Trump, “they’re not speaking for everybody.”“In fact, most of the big company CEOs aren’t terribly involved in partisan politics,” Kovacevich says.
