Just five minutes of vigorous exercise a day might help lower blood pressure, a new study suggests. People with high blood pressure have a higher risk for heart disease and stroke, the leading causes of death in the U.S. Nearly half of all Americans have high blood pressure, which is defined as a systolic blood pressure (the upper number) of greater than 130 or a diastolic blood pressure (the lower number) greater than 80. The researchers found that replacing any less active behavior with five minutes of exercise could lower systolic blood pressure by 0.68 points and diastolic blood pressure by 0.54 points. An estimated two point improvement in systolic blood pressure was observed when 20 minutes of vigorous exercise replaced, for example, 21 minutes of sedentary time or 26 minutes of slow-walking.

Market moves: The stock market tacked on some additional gains after the Federal Reserve on Thursday afternoon cut interest rates by 25 basis points. Bond yields, which move inversely to bond prices, have been on the rise since the Fed cut rates in September. London CNN —President-elect Donald Trump’s proposed protectionist policies, including hefty tariffs, will hurt Europe’s economic standing — leaving crisis-hit Germany particularly vulnerable, Goldman Sachs predicts. Goldman Sachs expects gross domestic product across the 20 countries that use the euro to expand 0.8% next year, down from the 1.1% it forecast previously. Goldman Sachs’ central expectation is for “a more limited set of tariffs on European economies,” targeting primarily their auto exports. Goldman Sachs now expects the German economy to grow only 0.5% next year because of trade tensions, just over half the 0.9% growth it forecast previously. “For European businesses, Trump’s return to the White House implies considerable trade policy risks and geopolitical uncertainty,” Berenberg chief economist Holger Schmieding wrote in a note Thursday.

CNN —Donald Trump believes presidents have almost absolute power. In his second term, there will be few political or legal restraints to check him. It’s not guaranteed that just because Trump has massive power he will spurn constitutional checks and balances. No other president has come into office armed with a Supreme Court ruling that grants significant immunity to presidents for official acts. Attempts to prosecute Trump’s political foes on spurious grounds, meanwhile, could theoretically see mass resignations of Justice Department staff.

Using its patented digital fingerprint technology, ProfilePrint can rapidly analyze the identity and quality of ingredients, helping agribusinesses save money and time. The problem, he explained, is a system of multiple rounds of physical food samples exchanged between buyer and sellers, replicated across "every part of the supply chain." Machine learning means the technology analyzes food samples at a molecular level and recognizes food quality within seconds. As well predicting the quality and flavor profiles, the company's ingredient quality platform can offer their client various options when it comes to balancing quality with price. Profile Print is not alone within the still embryonic pool of food quality and AI startups.

Our NFL writers addressed these topics and more in making one prediction for every team heading into the season’s second half. The fourth-year back is on pace to finish with 1,256 yards, which would be the fourth-highest total in team history. Every other NFL team has put a player in at least one of those categories during that stretch — and most teams have checked both boxes. Minnesota has one of the most productive defenses in the NFL and an offense loaded at the skill positions. And the Eagles have managed to win games despite bad luck and bad decisions.

New York CNN —Wednesday morning, my inbox was flooded with notes from analysts eager to talk about the election’s upside for various sectors. The crypto folks came on especially strong, cheering the success of the candidate who promised them the moon. When the stock market opened in New York, the enthusiasm for these so-called Trump trades went into hyperdrive. Virtually all mainstream economists oppose tariffs on that scale and expect they would cause inflation to rise yet again. “My worst-case scenario is that he’s actually successful with his blanket tariff policies,” Alpert told me.

Yet some adult lifestyle factors still appeared to be linked with improved cognitive performance and slower aging of the brain. “We are now looking into whether different constellations of brain ageing features are driven by particular subsets of risk factors.”As a researcher of the aging brain, Dr. Richard Isaacson said, the new paper spoke to him. There is a robust body of research on key differences in lifestyle that may contribute to differences in an aging brain. Adding a heart-healthy diet to your routine also can help slow brain aging and reduce dementia risk. “Those things may not exactly cause Alzheimer’s, but it can fast forward cognitive aging and fast forward cognitive decline.

Democrats called for a full party reckoning on Wednesday, as they attempted to pick up the pieces of their shattered organization a day after Vice President Kamala Harris’ loss to former President Donald Trump. Sen. Bernie Sanders, I-Vt., put out a statement blasting "big money interests and well-paid consultants who control the Democratic Party." "It should come as no great surprise that a Democratic Party which has abandoned working class people would find that the working class has abandoned them," he said Wednesday. Brendan Smialowski / AFP via Getty Images“People needed to pick who was going to go after him,” the Harris ally said of prosecutors and Democrats. “As a Palestinian, I think it doesn’t matter,” said Riyad Awad, 61, in the central West Bank city of Ramallah on Wednesday. Some expressed deep concern over Trump’s victory, while others were curious about whether he might ultimately be the right figure to stop the fighting after months of failed U.S. efforts. “He said that he’s going to end the war,” said 19-year-old Hussam Alsharif, who was displaced from his home farther south in Gaza by Israel’s offensive. He has praised Russian President Vladimir Putin and incorrectly blamed Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy for starting the war, while refusing to commit to sending more aid to the embattled country. Hoax bomb threats targeting polling places and election offices briefly disrupted voting in five battleground states, with the FBI saying the threats in four of those states came from Russian email domains. “The FBI is aware of bomb threats to polling locations in several states, many of which appear to originate from Russian email domains,” the FBI said in a statement Tuesday night. German officials accused Russia of orchestrating bomb threats against several polling places in Moldova’s presidential elections last week. Threats to polling sites and election offices were reported across about a dozen Pennsylvania counties, where targeted polling sites were ordered to stay open late, officials said. “But I think the number of these bomb threats is, if not surprising, very concerning,” he added.

In 2023, the U.S. Supreme Court upheld an earlier ruling stating that Alabama’s district map likely discriminated against Black voters and mandated redrawing the 2nd District. The new area has a majority of Black voters — 47.6%, compared to 45% who are white. His late father, Michael Figures, was an Alabama state senator and his mother serves in that role now. A ballot measure that would have enshrined abortion rights in Florida's constitution failed on Tuesday, NBC News projects, after a political fight that was among the most hotly contested in the state this election cycle. The amendment won majority support from Florida voters, but it needed to cross the 60% threshold to pass under state law. Its defeat is a setback for reproductive rights groups in the red-leaning state and a victory for Republican Gov. Even though the ballot measure failed, the NBC News Exit poll found that 65% of Florida voters said abortion should be legal in all or most cases. Another ballot measure DeSantis opposed, the effort to legalize the use of recreational marijuana in Florida, also failed on Tuesday, NBC News projected.

Europe could take a hit to GDP in a second Trump presidency, Goldman Sachs analysts say. Europe could face a big hit to economic growth as trade tensions increase, Goldman Sachs analysts said. The analysts downgraded their growth forecasts across the region, down to 0.8% from their previous forecast of 1.1% for 2025. AdvertisementThe analysts point to renewed trade tensions fueled by Trump's proposal for sweeping tariffs on all US imports. More significant than the actual tariff increases, though, will be the trade policy uncertainty that comes with them, the analysts say.

Nintendo on Wednesday said it will allow current Switch games to be played on the hit console's successor as it looks to drum up excitement among its current user base for the highly-anticipated device. Backward compatibility of games is critical for console makers for several reasons: firstly, when new consoles launch, they often do not have a huge amount of games to choose from. Making older games available for the new Switch will boost the device's appeal on this front. Secondly, current Switch users who are thinking of purchasing new games ahead of the new console launch may hold off until after its debut. Making current games playable on the Switch's successor removes that concern.
