The American Red Cross is facing an emergency blood shortage after the national supply fell by more than 25% since July 1. The organization said Monday that extreme temperatures and oppressive heat waves impacted almost 100 blood drives last month, in almost every state where the Red Cross collects blood. Blood donations typically slow down during the summer because of travel and other seasonal activities, but the Red Cross said extreme heat exacerbated the challenge, contributing to a shortfall of more than 19,000 blood donations in July. Type O blood is routinely in short supply because type O positive is the most common blood type, and type O negative is the universal blood type needed for emergency transfusions. Those who donate by Aug. 31 will receive a $20 Amazon gift card, the Red Cross said.

CNN —One major lesson from Vice President Kamala Harris’ sudden ascension to be the presumptive Democratic presidential nominee is that running mates matter. It’s a point not lost on some Republicans who are second-guessing Trump’s selection of Vance and Democrats who are anticipating Harris’ pick any day. Harris’ pick could come within days, according to CNN’s MJ Lee and Jeff Zeleny, who write that the pool of candidates has shrunk by one. Biden went on to pick Harris, the first woman of color to be on a national party’s presidential ticket. In 2016, Trump picked then-Indiana Gov.

The reality of the American air travel system is that powerful forces keep passengers flying the same carriers, even after service meltdowns like Delta just suffered. For passengers who live near one of the hubs where Delta controls most of the flights, such as Atlanta, Detroit, Minneapolis or Salt Lake City, choices are even more limited. But by Monday, the problems were mostly limited to Delta as other businesses were back to normal, adding to the frustration of its passengers. Delta canceled more than 4,400 flights from July 19 to 21, according to tracking service FlightAware. Past experience, plus the dominance of Delta in Atlanta and Don Hooper’s frequent flyer miles, would keep them using the airline.

The emails show Vance, who had yet to embark on his run for the Senate, writing to his classmate Sofia Nelson, a Detroit-based public defender. In them, Vance denounced the GOP's embrace of Trump, calling the former president a "morally reprehensible human being," and expressed disappointment with law enforcement after the killing of Michael Brown, a Black 18-year-old, in 2014. AdvertisementIn 2015, Vance wrote that he was "obviously outraged at Trump's rhetoric," comparing him to a demagogue "willing to exploit the people who believe crazy shit." He also wrote in 2016 that "the more white people feel like voting for trump, the more black people will suffer. As Senator JD Vance seeks the vice presidency, a former Yale Law School classmate and friend has shared about 90 of their emails and text messages, mostly from 2014 through 2017, with The New York Times. The emails add to an existing body of evidence showing how Mr. Vance pivoted from a strong opponent of former President Donald J. Trump to his running mate. They also provide an insight into a cultural willingness by Mr. Vance to accept his classmate, Sofia Nelson, who is transgender. Now, Nelson, who opposes the Trump-Vance ticket, hopes the emails will inform the opinion of voters about Mr. Vance. In response, a spokesman for the Vance campaign said in a statement that it was “unfortunate” for someone to share “decade-old private conversations between friends.”
