Asian stock markets may have had a weak year, but excessive cash in the region's companies is a hidden opportunity for investors, according to Jefferies. Asian ex-cash P/E is just 9.1 times, indicating "significant value," Jefferies' analysts noted. The region's stocks are also "appealing from the shareholder return perspective," given stronger prospects of buybacks backed by free cash flows and high cash balances, they wrote. Jefferies screened for Asian companies with "significant ex-cash value and strong fundamentals," and which it said make "good candidates" for buybacks and dividends. Other Asian stocks that made Jefferies' list include Singapore's transport company ComfortDelGro and Indian oil and gas company Petronet .

Every country needs an Inflation Reduction Act

REUTERS/David Gray/File Photo Acquire Licensing RightsMELBOURNE, Nov 23 (Reuters Breakingviews) - Lawmakers in South Korea blasted the U.S. Inflation Reduction Act as a betrayal. Yet concerns about market distortion from the policy intended to stimulate investment in the energy transition and signed into law by President Joe Biden in August 2022 are easing. The Biden administration’s willingness to negotiate on its package of $370 billion of tax breaks and other measures has helped. Reuters GraphicsTrouble is, governments also need to show that they will be fiscally responsible stewards of the energy transition in the short term – especially with inflation still a threat and budgets under pressure. In a speech on Nov. 2 about enabling Australia’s energy transition, Treasurer Jim Chalmers said that “incentives like the type we’ve seen in the Inflation Reduction Act in the United States can be part of an answer but they’re not the whole answer”.

Shoppers exit Nordstrom at the King of Prussia Mall on December 11, 2022 in King of Prussia, Pennsylvania. Nordstrom on Tuesday said sales slid by nearly 7% year over year, echoing other retailers' comments about weaker demand and budget-pressured consumers. Yet the department store operator reiterated its full-year sales outlook, saying it expects revenue to decline by between 4% and 6% versus a year ago, including retail sales and credit card revenues. Nordstrom is looking for growth after three straight years of sales that have been at or below pre-pandemic levels. As part of that push, the retailer has opened more of its off-price stores, Nordstrom Rack, and revamped merchandise in those stores to emphasize best-selling brands.

The year-end rally we've been enjoying could get another lift as companies scoop up shares of their own stock. Those gains are driven mainly by falling Treasury yields, as well as third-quarter results that have come in largely better than anticipated. But some market observers expect equities could get another boost from the number of companies exiting the "buyback blackout" window. This period spans several weeks around quarterly results when companies are restricted from repurchasing shares. As of the survey's close last Tuesday, that would mean the S & P 500 would reach 4,945, or an all-time high.

The loudest investor chatter for months has insisted the heavyweights of the Nasdaq have been everything to the market in 2023. Sunday is the second anniversary of the all-time closing high in both the Nasdaq Composite and Nasdaq 100 indexes, which remain 12% and 4 % underwater even after their monster gains in recent months. It's relatively rare for the Nasdaq 100 – the most easily investable part of the Nasdaq and the one most reflective of the mega-cap dominance – to enter a two-year downturn. Only three of the Big Seven have outperformed the Nasdaq 100 over the past two years – Apple, Nvidia and Microsoft — while Meta Platforms has kept pace and Amazon, Alphabet and Tesla have lagged. Friday showed signs of outright rotation, the Russell 2000 up 1.3% versus a flat Nasdaq 100.

However, his aspirations to make UniCredit the "bank of Europe" are proving trickier to realise with the CEO setting a high bar for mergers and acquisitions in the euro zone's fractured capital markets, despite having what he describes as the biggest war chest among European lenders. UniCredit bought Greece's 9% stake in Alpha Bank (ACBr.AT) and struck a commercial partnership with the Athens-based lender, also acquiring most of its Romanian operations. The CEO works closely with a small M&A team he set up within UniCredit which constantly reviews potential deals in the markets and businesses where the bank operates, people with knowledge of the matter said. But uneven regulation across the euro zone, where progress towards a single banking market has stalled, complicates cross-border deals. Calling on Europe to follow his lead, Orcel says he has unlocked UniCredit's potential by giving it a unified strategy across its 13 markets.

Investors looking for dividend plays may want to check out China-based wealth management firm Noah , according to UBS. Noah announced its first dividend payout plan in 2022, and its payout ratio — or the proportion of the company's net income paid out to shareholders as dividends — was equivalent to 17.5%, she said. However, there are likely more capital market initiatives to increase returns to shareholders, Li pointed out. "We expect the company to announce more initiatives to increase market liquidity and shareholder return. We see upside risk to a potentially increased dividend payout ratio for 2023E," she wrote.

Bank stocks are at an all-time low compared with the S&P 500 based on relative prices, according to data from BofA Global Research. One key factor for bank stocks is whether the Federal Reserve is close to wrapping up a monetary tightening cycle that has brought the highest U.S. interest rates in decades. Yet signs the Fed may keep rates around current levels through most of next year have weighed on bank stocks. This month, analysts at BofA Global Research said investors should “selectively” add exposure to bank stocks in anticipation of an interest rate peak. Overall, about 61% of all outstanding mortgages have an interest rate below 4%, according to the Apollo Group, leaving consumers little incentive to refinance or move.

Biden’s economic scorecard touts fragile advantage

And if the political strategist James Carville was right that “it’s the economy, stupid,” the next several months could make or break Joe Biden’s economic record. As things stand, the current ruler of the free world touts a fragile advantage. Households’ disposable income after adjusting for inflation hit a record $20 trillion in the month that Biden’s measure was approved, according to the Bureau of Economic Analysis. STUDENT LOANSForgiving swaths of student debt was another of Biden’s campaign promises, but his efforts have so far failed. And with higher interest rates making debt service more expensive, Biden’s spending could come back to bite him on election day.

Ryanair has returned money to investors in the past, but never on a regular basis. Between 2008 and 2020, the group paid out €6.74 billion ($7.2 billion) to shareholders via buybacks and ad hoc dividend payments, according to a spokesperson. Less competition has allowed the airline to increase ticket prices, which soared 24% on average, offsetting significantly higher fuel costs. That would be up from its previous record of €1.45 billion ($1.6 billion) earned in 2018, before the Covid-19 pandemic.
