When Melinda Katz ran for Queens district attorney in 2019, her principal opponent in the Democratic primary was a public defender and democratic socialist with a platform of ending cash bail and eventually abolishing the police. With endorsements from progressive prosecutors around the country — as well as from Senators Elizabeth Warren and Bernie Sanders and Representative Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez — Tiffany Cabán, a first-time candidate, lost by fewer than 60 votes after painting Ms. Katz as a regressive Democrat. Four years later, the strongest challenge to Ms. Katz is coming from George Grasso, an opponent running to her right who has accused her of being soft on crime. It’s not the only contest in the city where moderate Democrats are facing opponents on the right in primaries on Tuesday. In several City Council races, from the Bronx to southern Brooklyn, moderate Democrats are being challenged over public safety, affordable housing and education by more conservative members of their own party.

In a rare gesture, Modi has agreed to take questions from reporters with Biden at the White House on Thursday. Modi has not conducted a news conference since becoming prime minister nine years ago and his visit has drawn attention to concerns over human rights in India. Washington wants India to be a strategic counterweight to China and sees India as a critical partnership. Biden is under pressure from his fellow Democrats to discuss human rights with Modi.

According to Politico's Jonathan Martin, Obama has recently hosted a series of "informal, but lengthy private meetings with groups of next-generation House Democrats." One of the topics of dinner conversation, per Martin, was how Democrats can avoid coming off as elitist. Before the 2022 midterms, Obama returned to the campaign trail where he tore into the Republican Party and Trump. It is likely that Obama will eventually take on a high-profile role as the 2024 campaign heats up. As president, Obama dubbed Clinton "Secretary of Explaining Stuff" for his campaign trail appearances.

Biden said he discussed human rights and other democratic values with Modi during their talks in the White House. In reports on human rights and religious freedom, the State Department raised concerns over treatment of Muslims, Hindu Dalits, Christians and other religious minorities in India while also listing a crackdown on journalists. India has become a black-hole for religious minorities," said protester Raqib Hameed Naik, the founder of Hindutva Watch, a group that monitors reports of attacks on Indian minorities. Senator Bernie Sanders said Modi's "aggressive Hindu nationalism" has "left little space for India's religious minorities." The U.N. human rights office described a 2019 citizenship law as "fundamentally discriminatory" for excluding Muslim migrants.

WASHINGTON, June 21 (Reuters) - The U.S. House of Representatives approved a Republican effort on Wednesday to censure Representative Adam Schiff, a rare move intended to punish the Democrat for his leading role in investigating the conduct of Donald Trump when he was president. In practice, the measure, which was passed 213-209 along party lines, will result in a probe into Schiff by the Ethics Committee. Trump was impeached a second time by the House over his actions leading up to the Jan. 6, 2021, deadly riot at the U.S. Capitol. The House had defeated a separate censure effort against Schiff last week, when 20 Republicans joined 205 Democrats in opposition. The earlier censure effort came with a $16 million fine, since stripped out.

But with Schiff running for Senate as a #Resistance hero, the censure is only likely to help him. His Senate campaign fundraised heavily on it, and he thanked his GOP colleagues in a floor speech. In a floor speech earlier on Wednesday, Schiff thanked his Republican colleagues for bringing the censure resolution, saying he stood "proudly" before them. The censure resolution alleges that Schiff "misled the American people and brought disrepute upon the House of Representatives" for his handling of the Trump-Russia investigation. Schiff has also led Porter in recent fundraising, though the congresswoman has amassed a large war chest from her House campaign account.

CNN —Welcoming Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi to the White House this week for a state visit – the most elevated form of American diplomacy – will require President Joe Biden to make certain trade-offs. Yet Modi and India, the world’s largest democracy, also represent a lynchpin in Biden’s strategy in Asia. That, according to officials, was the rationale behind inviting Modi for a state visit, only the third of Biden’s presidency so far. The two leaders will hold a joint news conference – something virtually every state visit over the past two decades has featured – but that was only agreed upon after lengthy, delicate negotiations between the two sides. “We’re just grateful that Prime Minister Modi is going to be participating in a press event at the end of the visit.

A Supreme Court decision on student-loan forgiveness could come as soon as Thursday. The Supreme Court is expected to decide on the legality of the relief in the coming days. Ocasio-Cortez has been among some other Democratic lawmakers who have urged Biden to prepare a backup plan should the Supreme Court rule against his debt-relief plan. Amid the push to ensure relief for borrowers, though, Republican lawmakers have been pursuing different routes to block student-loan forgiveness without waiting for the Supreme Court ruling. For now, all eyes are on the Supreme Court to see how it decides Biden's student-loan forgiveness plan for millions of borrowers is legal.

Two years ago, Representative Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez set out to put her imprint on New York City government, using her personal clout and a leadership PAC to boost dozens of left-leaning candidates. Yet as New Yorkers prepare to go back to the polls next week to begin electing a new City Council, Ms. Ocasio-Cortez has been practically invisible. Courage to Change, her political action committee that backed 60 candidates in 2021, has gone dormant. And while she has offered to quietly help left-leaning incumbents who dissented from last year’s city budget, Ms. Ocasio-Cortez has yet to issue any actual endorsements — and may not, as early voting began Saturday. “But in the meantime, please do not use Courage to Change PAC or A.O.C.

WASHINGTON, June 14 (Reuters) - The U.S. House of Representatives on Wednesday rejected a Republican effort to censure Representative Adam Schiff, a Democrat who played a leading role in the first impeachment of then-President Donald Trump in 2019. The Republican-controlled chamber defeated the motion by a vote of 225 to 196, with 20 Republicans joining 205 Democrats in opposition. Schiff is running for California's Senate seat in 2024 and sent a fundraising email based on Wednesday's censure move. Republican Representative Paul Gosar was censured in 2021 after he posted a cartoon video that showed him killing Democratic Representative Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, the first time the censure had been used in a decade. In a letter to Democratic colleagues, Schiff called the motion "not only a terrible misuse of House precedent and resources, but a clear attack on our constitutional system of checks and balances."

Recent inspector general reports document waste, absenteeism, contracting irregularities, workplace misconduct and sexual harassment at an agency with an annual budget of $1.3 billion. Some 17 agency employees knew about Mr. Blanton’s misconduct but did not report it. Failures of the Capitol Police Board (the architect is one of three voting members) and Mr. Blanton’s failed response contributed to the Jan. 6 Capitol breach, according to a Senate report. “The report is filled with errors, omissions, mischaracterizations, misstatements and conclusory statements lacking evidence,” he said. “Problem after problem after problem,” Thomas J. Many Democratic lawmakers are unhappy with the debt-ceiling bill that just passed the House. But some of them will vote for the bill anyway because they say a default would be far worse. "The macro alternative is absolutely indigestible," Rep. Jamie Raskin told Politico. On Wednesday night, the House easily passed Biden and McCarthy's Fiscal Responsibility Act with a bipartisan vote of 314-117. Other Democrats feel the same — but fear a default on the nation's debt would be worse than signing the bipartisan debt-ceiling bill into law.
