While U.S. officials picked up intelligence that pointed to Wagner Group chief Yevgeny Prigozhin's move on the Russian military , it would have been difficult to anticipate specific outcomes of a revolt with high confidence, former U.S. intelligence officials said. The events of the weekend “were not only unprecedented in modern times, but were also nearly impossible to predict,” said Jamil Jaffer, a former senior counsel to the House Intelligence Committee and national security official in the George W. Bush White House. The intelligence community, former officials said, would have likely been doing some guesswork on how assertively and swiftly Progozhin intended to act and the extent of the challenge to Russian President Vladimir Putin's regime, given the mercurial personalities at play. The difficulty of discerning from communications what was genuine and what amounted to idle venting of frustrations, and the lack of any comparable situation in recent Russian history would have also posed a challenge, former officials said.

Wagner Group boss Yevgeny Prigozhin will move to Belarus and won't be prosecuted, a Kremlin spokesman said. Prigozhin and his mercenary group waged an uprising and marched across Russia on Saturday. In exchange for Prigozhin's exile to Belarus, the mercenary leader won't be prosecuted, the Associated Press reported, citing a Kremlin spokesperson. "The war wasn't needed to return Russian citizens to our bosom, nor to demilitarize or denazify Ukraine," Prigozhin said. On Saturday the mercenary group was reportedly also in Lipesk province, just 225 miles south of Moscow.

Residents of the city had milled about calmly, filming on mobile phones as Wagner fighters in armoured vehicles and battle tanks took up positions. Deputy Defence Minister Hanna Maliar said an offensive was launched near a group of villages ringing Bakhmut, which was taken by Wagner forces in May after months of fighting. Tarnavskiy said the area had been under Russian control since separatist forces backed by Moscow seized it in 2014.

Wagner Group's leader Yevgeny Prigozhin has defiantly responded to Russian President Vladimir Putin. Putin had said that the "armed mutiny" was a "betrayal" and vowed that Russia would defend itself. Prigozhin said the Russian president was "deeply mistaken" and that he and his men were "patriots" in a voice note posted to his Telegram channel on Saturday. All 25,000, and then another 25,000," he said about his troops in a social media post, per an Al Jazeera translation. The UK Department of Defense said on Saturday that Wagner forces are now "almost certainly" aiming to march to Moscow.

To be sure, U.S. officials say they do not see an immediate threat to the security of Russia's strategic and tactical weapons. "We have not seen any changes in the disposition of Russian nuclear forces," said a National Security Council spokesperson in response to questions from Reuters. U.S. intelligence agencies said in their 2023 Annual Threat assessment that "Russia's nuclear material security ... remains a concern despite improvements to material protection, control, and accounting at Russia's nuclear sites since the 1990s." Russia’s nuclear arsenal is the world’s largest, estimated in 2022 at 5,977 warheads by the Federation of American scientists, compared to an estimated 5,428 held by the U.S. “This has always been a super-high (U.S.) intelligence collection priority and the command and control of nuclear weapons in Russia,” said Hoffman.

REUTERS/Alexander ErmochenkoMOSCOW, June 24 (Reuters) - Wagner mercenary chief Yevgeny Prigozhin will move to Belarus under a deal brokered by Belarusian President Alexander Lukashenko to end an armed mutiny that Prigozhin had led against Russia's military leadership, the Kremlin said on Saturday. Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov told reporters Lukashenko had offered to mediate, with Russian President Vladimir Putin's agreement, because he had known Prigozhin personally for around 20 years. Although Putin had earlier vowed to punish those who participated in the mutiny, Peskov said the agreement had had the "higher goal" of avoiding confrontation and bloodshed. Prigozhin had earlier demanded that Defence Minister Sergei Shoigu and Chief of the General Staff Valery Gerasimov be handed over to him.

Ending their short-lived mutiny, fighters of the Wagner group began heading back to their bases late on Saturday in return for guarantees for their safety. Their commander, Yevgeny Prigozhin, will move to Belarus under the deal mediated by Belarusian President Alexander Lukashenko. Peskov said Lukashenko had offered to mediate, with Putin's approval, because he had known Prigozhin personally for around 20 years. She said the swift ending of the turmoil indicated that Putin's rule would not be undermined by it alone. The confrontation with the paramilitary Wagner Group is likely to erode confidence in Russian President Vladimir Putin's government and pile more pressure on an economy already strained by Western sanctions, said Erik Meyersson, chief emerging market strategist at SEB Group. “There’s only one direction for Russian financial assets in the short term,” said Meyersson. “Even if you think this is a failed attempted coup...there’s clearly going to be a weakening of the Russian regime and that should put a sizable risk premium on Russian assets.”

Scope Ratings sees a 0.8% contraction in Russia's economy this year, Reuters reported. This is as the country's average inflation sits at 6%, made worse by a serious labor shortage. That's as the Kremlin has turned to a total war economy: it has spent around 5% of Russia's GDP on the Ukraine war, while pushing for increased military production. Meanwhile, the agency also warned that Russia's war will prevent it from addressing pre-existing problems with the economy, such as weak investing, low productivity growth, and a declining population. Meanwhile, the Russian government is projecting 1.2% growth, an estimate recently outpaced by President Vladimir Putin's own forecasts of 2%, Reuters reports.

Over a year since Russia invaded Ukraine, there still does not appear to be a clear end in sight. Here are six ways the war could play out and what victory might look like for either side. Russia's war in Ukraine has been raging on for over a year, and there is still no clear end to the conflict in sight. With the largest land war in Europe since 1945 now entering a new phase, here are six ways it could play out. One senior official previously said that a Russian nuclear strike could trigger a "physical response" from NATO.

A Russian ultranationalist party has made an AI chatbot of deceased leader Vladimir Zhirinovsky. The chatbot answers questions about the Ukraine war. According to The Moscow Times, people can ask the chatbot questions, and it makes "predictions" about key world events. At Thursday's event, the outlet said, the chatbot predicted that the war in Ukraine would continue until "peace and the Russian people's safety are fully restored." Putin paid tribute to Zhirinovsky after his death, and made a rare public appearance to attend his funeral last April.

Wagner Group head Yevgeny Priogzhin rejected Vladimir Putin's push to have mercenaries sign contracts with the Russian army. Priogzhin has been a harsh critic of the Russian Military of Defense and Putin's handling of the war in Ukraine. That is why they will not sign the contracts," Priogzhin said, according to the UK's Ministry of Defense. On June 10, the Russian Ministry of Defense announced that "volunteer formations" like Wagner Group fighters must sign official contracts with the Russian Army, the UK intel sources said. One expert described the relationship between the Russian army and the Wagner Group as "dysfunctional."

Russia's isolation from the global economy caused poor turnout at Putin's economic forum in St. Petersburg. The event previously drew big names from the West, but was mostly populated by lower-level politicians this time. Experts have sounded the alarm on Russia's economy amid Ukraine war sanctions. But experts have warned that the moat between Russia and Western world could be lethal to Russia's economy. Though some prognosticators see Russia's economy posting small growth this year, those estimates are largely based on the Kremlin's "cherry-picked" statistics, according to two Yale researchers, who recently made the case that Russia's economy is struggling far more than Putin has let on so far.

It does not provide similar detail about fighting on the southern front where the main counteroffensive is expected. However, some prominent Russian military bloggers indicated that Ukrainian forces had taken Blahodatne and Neskuchne, although they said fighting for Makarivka was continuing. It is almost certainly far too early to draw conclusions about the fate of the counteroffensive from early skirmishes that may be more about testing Russian defences than pursuing a major advance. "When we see large, armoured formations join the assault, then I think we’ll know the main attack has really begun." But Yevgeny Prigozhin, the increasing recalcitrant and voluble leader of the Wagner militia, which captured Bakhmut from Ukrainian forces after almost a year of attritional fighting, said on Sunday he would refuse to sign.

"Wagner will not sign any contracts with Shoigu," Prigozhin said in response to a request for comment on the matter. The defence ministry did not respond to a Reuters request for comment. The defence ministry said that in the interests of increasing the effectiveness of "volunteer detachments", all such units - or their men - would have to sign a contract with the defence ministry by July 1. It did not mention Wagner by name but it routinely refers to Wagner as "volunteer assault detachments". "These measures will increase the combat capabilities and effectiveness of the armed forces and their volunteer detachments," Deputy Defence Minister Nikolai Pankov said.

Russia's central bank sounded alarms on inflation amid the falling ruble and a record labor shortage. Since then, the central bank has brought rates back down as inflation has cooled. Other data have shown Russia is suffering from a record labor shortage as Vladimir Putin's war on Ukraine delivered a major shock to the workforce. And the mass exodus of Russians to other countries to escape military service or economic hardship has made the labor shortage even worse. The labor shortage also contributed to a sharp drop last month in Russia's industrial production, which tumbled 5% from the prior month.

Vladimir Putin's annual phone-in has been postponed, Kommersant reported. The "Direct Line" phone-in usually runs for hours and involves Putin fielding questions from ordinary Russian citizens about a range of social and policy issues. Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov told Russian state media agency Tass that no date had been set for the event. If held in December, the phone-in would be timed for just before the likely launch of Putin's 2024 presidential campaign. But on Thursday Ukraine launched its much-anticipated counteroffensive to drive Russian forces back from territory in east and south Ukraine.

STOCKHOLM, June 9 (Reuters) - Sweden will allow NATO to base troops on its territory even before it formally joins the defence alliance, the prime minister and defence minister said on Friday. Sweden applied last year to join NATO as a result of Russia's invasion of Ukraine. "The government has decided that the Swedish Armed Forces may undertake preparations with NATO and NATO countries to enable future joint operations," Prime Minister Ulf Kristersson and Defence Minister Pal Jonson said.
