For our final Times Opinion focus group of the 2024 election, we spoke with late-deciding voters — Americans who were seesawing between Kamala Harris and Donald Trump recently and making up their minds at the last minute. All of our 15 late deciders were from swing states like Pennsylvania and Michigan, and many of them voted for Mr. Trump in 2016 and for Joe Biden in 2020. No surprise, most of them had concerns and hang-ups about both of the candidates, but it quickly became clear that Mr. Trump, in particular, was doing himself no favors with these voters. As for Ms. Harris, most of these voters thought she would be "more of the same" as president, rather than a leader who pursues changes, and saw her as less authentic than Mr. Trump.. But in the end, years of misgivings and doubts about Mr. Trump outweighed the uncertainty about Ms. Harris with several participants, and more of them saw her winning than Mr. Trump.

They also agreed in principle to bring new electric-vehicle battery plants into the national union contract. After negotiations broke down in early July 2023, Atlanta-based UPS reached a contract agreement with the Teamsters just days before an Aug. 1 deadline. The Culinary Workers Union announced on the social platform X that the deal came together after a year of negotiations. Pawtucket, Rhode Island AP —For several decades, the cremated remains of more than two dozen American Civil War veterans languished in storage facilities at a funeral home and cemetery in Seattle. The simple copper and cardboard urns gathering dust on shelves only had the name of each of the 28 soldiers – but nothing linking them to the Civil War. While some remains are hidden away in funeral homes, others were found where they fell in battle or by Civil War re-enactors combing old graveyards. The remains of several more Civil War veterans were sent to Maine, Rhode Island and other places where family connections were found. Bruce Frail and his son Ben – both long active in the Sons of Union Veterans of the Civil War – were on hand for service.

Trump referenced that rally during his speech in Raleigh on Monday, estimating the crowd inside to be 28,000. The crowd for Trump's speech was estimated to be around 53,000, according to the House committee investigating the riot. Harris's campaign said that around 75,000 people attended her speech last week at the same site as Trump's Jan. 6 speech. When she was interrupted by pro-Trump protesters at a rally in Wisconsin last month, she told them they should "go to the smaller rally down the street." After leaving the workforce during the pandemic because she couldn’t find affordable child care, Longenecker said her family has been economizing. But her husband recently got a new job that pays more per hour and with lower health care costs. Her husband’s side gig has been “flourishing,” giving them steady monthly income and a glimpse of a future beyond waiting tables. Her monthly retirement income of around $7,600 is comfortable, but homeowners insurance, utilities and long-term care costs are weighing on her. Keys said Harris has put forth clearer economic policies, like her plan to offer first-time homebuyers $25,000 in downpayment assistance.

But then there are voters who say former President Donald Trump lacks the character or demeanor a president should have. And some specifically panned the the racist and demeaning rhetoric from Trump allies at last week's rally at Madison Square Garden, criticizing them for alienating Americans instead of bringing them together. Other voters derisively mentioned Harris' laughter, called Trump more "transparent in what he's looking to do," and cited their support for Trump economic policies like tariffs and not taxing overtime pay. For the Harris supporters who briefly, seriously, considered Trump, the former president's tone and demeanor looms large. Again, a handful of voters brought up the rally comments about Puerto Ricans when voters describing something that made them view Trump more negatively.

The Times said that it has “robust plans in place to ensure that we are able to fulfill our mission and serve our readers.”The Times Tech Guild and NYT management negotiated through late Sunday, according to a report from the New York Times. Issues at the table included having a “just cause” provision in the guild contract, pay increases and pay equity, and return-to-office policies.

DETROIT — Ford Motor on Monday reported a 15.2% increase in U.S. new vehicles sales last month compared with subdued levels due to a union strike in October 2023. The automaker's sales gain outpaced the industry's estimated increase of 10% last month compared with a year earlier. Sales of hybrid vehicles, which Ford has been emphasizing amid a slower-than-expected adoption of electric vehicles, were up 38.5% last month compared to October 2023, Ford said. Its EV sales were down by 8.3%, while sales of traditional vehicles with internal combustion engines were up 14.1%Ford's EV sales remain up 38.2% for the year through October compared with the same timeframe in 2023.
