Lai Ching-te on Sunday said it's "impossible" that China would become Taiwan's "motherland." AdvertisementTaiwanese President Lai Ching-te on Sunday challenged the idea that mainland China is Taiwan's "motherland," saying the island's government is older than Beijing's. Meanwhile, the People's Republic of China, which governs mainland China from Beijing under leader Xi Jinping, celebrated its 75th birthday on October 1. Advertisement"Therefore, in terms of age, it is definitely impossible for the People's Republic of China to become the motherland of the people of the Republic of China," Lai said. "On the contrary, the Republic of China may actually be the motherland of the people over 75 years old in the People's Republic of China," Lai continued as his audience applauded and cheered.

The terror attack has helped push the Middle East to the brink of a wider regional war. One year after the massacre, the Middle East has only plunged deeper into violence and is on the brink of a broader war. Globally, the immediate concern is that oil supplies will diminish significantly should conflict spill over to the rest of the Middle East. Everyone but Biden can see this," wrote Andrew Exum, a former US deputy assistant secretary of defense for Middle East policy, in The Atlantic last week. The global economy on edgeWhen the conflict began a year ago, there were fears that wider conflict in the Middle East could impact the global economy.

Propelled by US incentives, Saudi Arabia and Israel seemed closer than ever to a historic normalization of relations. It was October 10, and Major General Itai Veruv of the Israel Defense Forces (IDF) was leading the first international press access to see the devastation of Hamas’ attacks. Israel's Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu is unwilling to be a partner in a deal that would resow Middle East relations. Nearly 42,000 Palestinians in Gaza have been killed, many by US bombs and bullets in Israel’s hands, authorities in Gaza say. Tehran’s Shia proxies in Iraq have also answered its calls and begun escalating drone attacks on Israel.

Multiple news organizations and free press groups have accused the Israeli military of deliberately targeting journalists. “One year in, Israel’s conduct of the war in Gaza has exacted an unprecedented and horrific toll on Palestinian journalists and the region’s media landscape,” CPJ said. A portrait of Hezbollah chief Hassan Nasrallah sits amid destruction in a area targeted overnight by Israeli airstrikes in Saksakiyeh on September 26, 2024. The potential successor to slain Hezbollah leader Sayyed Hassan Nasrallah has been out of contact since Friday, a Lebanese security source said on Saturday, after an Israeli airstrike that is reported to have targeted him. The Lebanese security source and two other Lebanese security sources said that ongoing Israeli strikes on Beirut's southern suburb — known as Dahiyeh — since Friday have kept rescue workers from scouring the site of the attack. The loss of Nasrallah's rumored successor would be yet another blow to Hezbollah and its patron Iran. The Lebanese security official told Reuters that Saturday's strike on a Palestinian refugee camp in Tripoli killed a member of Hamas, his wife and two children.

Throughout the year, Ukraine has lost a series of cities, towns and villages in its eastern Donbas region to Russia, typically withdrawing its troops after hard-fought battles that sometimes lasted for months. Marinka was the first to fall, a sign in January that Russia had regained momentum on the battlefield. Then came Avdiivka, an industrial city where Ukrainian soldiers had hunkered down in a dense maze of trenches and bunkers. Finally, this past week, Ukraine retreated from Vuhledar, a mining town perched on high ground that was a linchpin of Ukrainian defenses in the southeast. But Ukrainian commanders and military experts dispute that, saying that a more crucial fight is unfolding in the region that goes beyond simple territorial gains and losses.

Ukraine and Russia have boosted domestic drone production efforts to meet front-line needs. AdvertisementThe stunning rise of drone warfare has pushed Ukraine and Russia to boost their respective domestic efforts to produce unmanned systems, kicking off a high-stakes race to out-manufacture the other. By contrast, Russian President Vladimir Putin said last month that Moscow intended to ramp up drone production tenfold to around 1.4 million a year, noticeably less than its neighbor. Although more traditional military drones are active. The demand for more unmanned systems has pushed Ukraine and Russia to increase their domestic drone output to keep up with battlefield requirements — setting the stage for an unprecedented arms race.

Liverpool, ENGLAND — British defense officials are vying to secure more funding as Finance Minister Rachel Reeves' upcoming Autumn budget risks exacerbating already beleaguered efforts to boost military investment. Maria Eagle, the U.K.'s minister of defense procurement, joined a chorus of voices that called on the sector to prove that it could be more efficient under the new government, as the Treasury grapples with allocating its stretched finances. Meanwhile, the war in Ukraine has cast a spotlight on deep inefficiencies within Britain's defense sectors, provoking calls for reform. A 72-page House of Lords report published Thursday last week warned of "burdensome bureaucracy" in military recruitment and "cumbersome" procurement processes. Unless "laser-sharp priorities" are set, even 2.5% might not be enough to meet the country's defense needs, it said, adding that the government must acknowledge the essential need for higher defense spending and communicate that to the public.

Twice this year, US forces in the region have assisted Israel in intercepting an attack by Iran. Austin announced in early August that he was sending the USS Abraham Lincoln Carrier Strike Group to the region; it arrived later that month. The strike group consists of thousands of sailors and Marines, spanning across three destroyers and a carrier air wing. The USS Spruance and USS Frank E. Petersen Jr., also both guided-missile destroyers that are part of the strike group, were operating in the Red Sea. In addition to the firepower brought by the Lincoln strike group, the Navy has a number of other destroyers and capabilities in the region.

"Iran uses ballistic missiles as a replacement for aircraft," a regional expert said. Iran used more ballistic missiles than the 120 it launched during its April barrage, its first direct attack on Israel. Iran has also shown a preference for firing ballistic missiles against less-defended targets closer to home. Since 2017, Iran has also used its ballistic missiles against ISIS in Syria, following terrorist attacks in Iran and, on one occasion, alleged militant targets in Pakistan. In January 2024, Tehran even used ballistic missiles to destroy a businessman's residence in neighboring Iraqi Kurdistan.

The dockworkers' strike threatens supply chains, while Hurricane Helene caused costly damage. Devastation from Hurricane Helene, a dockworkers' strike, and escalating conflict in the Middle East all threaten to scramble supply chains and inflate prices. How much the strike impacts prices depends on how much of a cushion companies have built to deal with any bottlenecks. Bottlenecks also encourage carriers to raise their prices, increasing retail and consumer goods prices, Kent said. The hurricane has also disrupted some supply chains, including healthcare supplies and high-purity quartz needed for semiconductor manufacturing.

KAOHSIUNG, Taiwan — Taiwan shut down on Wednesday, grounding hundreds of flights and closing schools, offices and financial markets ahead of the arrival of a weakening Typhoon Krathon, with one person reported dead and torrential rain lashing the island’s south. Although the typhoon has weakened, the threats from a storm surge, strong winds and rain remain as it slowly makes its way toward Taiwan’s coast, weather forecasters said. The typhoon would lose power once it hit land, said Kaohsiung Mayor Chen Chi-mai, but would still bring intense winds and rain. Once it hits land, the typhoon could be downgraded into a tropical depression and dissipate, which has happened only once before in Taiwan, in 2001, forecasters said. In Taipei, some malls and shops remained open, with rain only expected later in the day.
