BENGALURU, Nov 16 (Reuters) - Tata Motors (TAMO.NS)-owned luxury carmaker Jaguar Land Rover said on Wednesday Chief Executive Officer Thierry Bollore would resign due to personal reasons after more than two years in the role. Adrian Mardell will take over as CEO on an interim basis, JLR said. A 32-year JLR veteran, Mardell is currently a member of the company's executive board. JLR said earlier this month its second-quarter loss before tax narrowed to 173 million pounds ($206.06 million), while revenue rose 36% from a year earlier. The division's performance is key to India's Tata Motors as it contributes nearly 60% to the group's revenue from operations.
The main plank of the strategy is the separation of its combustion engine business from its electric vehicle (EV) operation. ELECTRIC PUSHAn early mover in electric cars, Renault has fallen behind newer, more agile rivals such as Tesla (TSLA.O). By teaming up its new businesses with the best available partners, "Renault hopes to win medals in those different sports instead of remaining at an average level in all five", he said. "This contrasts with what some other automakers have said, notably Volkswagen (VOWG_p.DE), Mercedes (MBGn.DE), and Stellantis (STLA.MI), who do not believe in (electric vehicle) business separations," he said. The sweeping U.S. legislation, which was approved by U.S. lawmakers in August and includes a record $369 billion in spending on climate and energy policies, was discussed by the 27 EU finance ministers on Tuesday. The same official added that "there is a political consensus (among the 27 ministers) that this plan threatens the European industry." The EU has listed at least nine points in the U.S. Inflation Reduction Act that could be in breach of international trade rules. We don't want to see any kind of decision that could harm this level playing field. "The level playing field is at the core of the trade relationship between the two continents and we don't want to see any kind of decision that could harm this level playing field," he said.
BRUSSELS, Nov 9 (Reuters) - EU countries and European Parliament lawmakers are likely to reach a deal on a 6-billion-euro ($6 billion) satellite internet system next week, people familiar with the matter said on Wednesday, driven by the bloc's push to cut its dependency on foreign companies and the Ukraine war. The European Commission announced the initiative to build and operate a satellite internet system in February, part of EU industry chief Thierry Breton's campaign for strategic autonomy. Officials from EU countries and EU lawmakers will meet on Nov. 17 in what is expected to be the last meeting to thrash out final details, the people said. The proposed satellite internet system could lead to the construction and launch of up to 170 low orbit satellites between 2025 and 2027. The companies active in this area include Elon Musk's SpaceX, Amazon's (AMZN.O) Kuiper Systems and British satellite company OneWeb.
The tie-up with Geely comes as Renault fleshes out plans to establish an EV spin-off called Ampere. According to Renault, France-based Ampere "will develop, manufacture, and sell full EV passenger cars." This was because, Pieton argued, it created "a world-leading supplier of ICE and hybrid powertrains with around 19,000 employees in the world, covering 130 countries." "Manufacturers need to be flexible in their powertrain offerings according to market needs — which differ across the world." The U.K., for example, wants to stop the sale of new diesel and gasoline cars and vans by 2030.

PARIS, Nov 8 (Reuters) - Nissan (7201.T) is considering taking an equity stake in the Ampere unit, which could be listed on the stock market at the end of 2023, Renault (RENA.PA) chief financial officer Thierry Pieton told an investor presentation on Tuesday. The scale of Renault's planned overhaul- encompassing the gasoline engine business it has code-named "Horse" and the electric one code-named "Ampere" - speaks to the pressure automakers now feel from investors and regulators to quicken their move to electric vehicles, with Europe having effectively banned combustion engines from 2035. The effort to ban TikTok is back, and it could gain more strength after the midterm elections. Alex Brandon / AP fileExperts said there’s a steep hill to climb for those who want a total TikTok ban, but the midterms could provide a push. The renewed push for a TikTok ban or forced sale is taking place while the company is in negotiations with the Biden administration on a potential written security agreement. TikTok says it believes the agreement would address not only privacy concerns but how the app moderates content. Rubio is co-sponsoring legislation to ban TikTok from all U.S. government devices.
PARIS/STOCKHOLM, Nov 4 (Reuters) - Telecom operators are pushing the European Union to implement new laws that would make Big Tech pay for network costs, following Australia's example, according to four sources close to the matter. "GSMA is coordinating a proposal that speaks to Big Tech contribution to European infrastructure investment," said John Giusti, GSMA's chief regulatory officer, without elaborating on the content of the proposal. Google, Facebook, Netflix, Amazon did not immediately respond to requests for comment. Australia's recently-adopted laws in its own spat with Google and Facebook have emerged as the most-favoured weapon for telecoms operators in their dispute with Big Tech companies, the sources said. The rules, first aimed at compelling tech giants to pay for news content online, allow an Australian government-appointed arbitrator to set fees if Big Tech companies and news publishers fail to find a common ground over copyright.

Dutch paints and coatings maker Akzo Nobel has suspended its 2023 core profit outlook, citing macroeconomic turbulence which is negatively affecting consumer confidence. The Amsterdam-based group, which makes the Dulux and Flexa paints and supplies to sectors ranging from aerospace to yachts, said several markets are expected to experience disruptions. Akzo Nobel, which had previously forecast to reach earnings before interest, taxes, depreciation and amortisation (EBITDA) of 2 billion euros ($1.96 billion) in 2023, said it would provide further guidance when it announces full-year results. The company posted a third-quarter adjusted operating income excluding the retrospective impact of hyperinflation accounting at 201 million euros, within the 195-215 million euros range it had guided for in September. Analysts in a Vara Research poll had on average estimated it to come in at 195.8 million euros.

Paris CNN —Some 28.5% – nearly one third – of gas stations in mainland France are out of stock of at least one fuel, French Energy Transition Minister Agnes Pannier-Runacher told journalists Friday. A source from the office of the French prime minister on Friday blamed the long lines and exhausted stocks at French gas stations this week on panic buying, rather than just supply problems. This is despite gas companies providing between a 30% and 50% increase in supply of gas to pumps this week, compared to a normal week, the source said. Earlier this week, the French government ordered staff at an ExxonMobil refinery in Normandy to return to work, a highly unusual step. Meanwhile, on Friday, French energy giant TotalEnergies struck a deal with two French trade unions, CFE-CGC and the CFDT, to increase salaries for 2023.

The maximum capacity of the new gas link is 100 GWh/d, the operator said in a statement. Under the agreement reached by the euro zone's two largest countries in the aftermath of Russia's invasion of Ukraine, Germany also pledged to provide France, which is currently plagued by nuclear reactor outages, additional electricity if needed. GRTgaz head Thierry Trouve told journalists he could not say when the maximum of 100 GWh/d could be reached. Under French law, workers who ignore such an order could face a €10,000 ($9,700) fine or six months imprisonment. The rarely used measure can be imposed by the government when the country’s national security is at risk because of strike action. Striking workers have blockaded ExxonMobil and TotalEnergies (TOT) refineries for several weeks, disrupting supply to thousands of gas stations. Nearly one in three gas stations reported difficulties with supplies on Monday, according to France’s energy minister Agnes Pannier-Runacher. CNN affiliate BFMTV reported miles-long tailbacks at gas stations, with drivers at one site on the edge of Paris queuing for nearly two miles earlier this week.
The EU issues joint bonds for an up-to 800 billion euro ($879 bln) post-COVID recovery fund, on top of 92 billion euros sold for its SURE unemployment scheme. 3/ How would joint issuance be funded? EU officials calling for joint borrowing said it could resemble the SURE work programme. Since October 2020, the EU has raised just 260 billion euros for the recovery fund and SURE. That means recovery fund issuance may end up lower than 800 billion euros without changes to that programme, denting the EU's ambitions of becoming a top borrower.
Smartphone with Netflix logo is placed on a keyboard in this illustration taken April 19, 2022. REUTERS/Dado RuvicAMSTERDAM, Oct 11 (Reuters) - A group of European telecom regulators does not support the idea of having big tech firms such as Google and Netflix paying for telecommunications infrastructure, it said in initial findings published on Tuesday. However, digital rights groups fear that if the big tech firms fund infrastructure, they will also strike deals with telecom firms to give their own traffic preferential treatment, undermining the principle of net neutrality. In a reaction to the BEREC findings, telecom lobby group ETNO - the European Telecommunications Network Operators, which represents Deutsche Telekom, Orange Group, Telefonica and others - rejected the BEREC findings as outdated and said it would submit new evidence to the Commission to support its position. EU industry chief Thierry Breton has said the European Union will review the matter early in 2023.
