London-listed retailers Frasers Group and Next are two clothing retailers that will "dominate" the sector during a recession, according to a veteran Schroders fund manager. Andrew Brough, who runs the Schroder UK Mid Cap Fund, said the two conservatively run companies are well placed to expand and take market share during a downturn through acquisitions. Shares of Frasers Group have risen by 30.6% over the past year, outperforming the FTSE 350 general retailers index, which has fallen by 29.3% over the same period. Frasers Group is Brough's largest holding, making up 6.7% of his fund. Brough, who's run his fund for 23 years, said he was more optimistic than others about the U.K.'s economy over the near term.
Cracking ice-cold cases, digging up former associates and unearthing decades-old mistakes by his not-so-beloved MI5 is what really gets the veteran British agent’s blood up. The slow horses of “Slow Horses.”Any season 2 is approached with apprehension, especially when a show has been as successful as this series was in season 1. But it may be even better now, with its likable misfits’ various back stories revealed and the characters established—especially Jackson, played with a malignant flourish by Gary Oldman . His character may not be quite as flatulent as he was last time around, but is just as untidy and unhygienic. (Jackson does suggest an excessively dissipated version of Le Carré’s George Smiley , whom Mr. Oldman played in “Tinker Tailor Soldier Spy.”)
LONDON, Nov 29 (Reuters) - European home improvement retailer Kingfisher (KGF.L) has agreed a five-year partnership with Google Cloud , a move it said should provide customers with faster and more intuitive searches, and better tailor product ranges. The company, which owns DIY brands B&Q and Castorama, and trade-focused Screwfix and TradePoint, increased online sales during the pandemic when stores were closed and customers spent more on home improvements. E-commerce sales were up 138% over three years in its third quarter, it said this month. Kingfisher, a long-time user of SAP software, had started moving its legacy data to Google Cloud, where it could be used to test new online concepts and improve the efficiency of deliveries such as its less-than-one-hour Screwfix 'Sprint' service. Google Cloud Chief Executive Thomas Kurian said its technology was helping customers identify product using image search, or by answering questions posed in imprecise terms.
At its annual Las Vegas conference, the cloud unit also showed off AWS Clean Rooms, which allows businesses to tailor ads to customers while maintaining their privacy, among other applications. The services are part of Amazon's long-time strategy to develop functions for its e-commerce arm and then offer them to other companies. At the same time, Amazon's cloud has lost out on sales to brick-and-mortar retailers which are reluctant to hire a company that is also their e-commerce competitor. Other new services it announced include Amazon Omics for genomic analysis and Amazon Security Lake, which helps businesses assemble data from cybersecurity vendors and other sources. Gary Oldman has been starring in films for the past 40 years, but he doesn't anticipate working for too much longer. In a recent interview with the Sunday Times, the 64-year-old actor said that he is looking forward to pursuing other interests beyond performing. "I've had an enviable career, but careers wane," Oldman said. "When you're young, you think you're going to get 'round to doing all of them—read that book—then the years go by," he said. Jeans as we know them today were born decades later when Strauss teamed up with a tailor to create riveted pants. The Levi Strauss factory in San Francisco in 1882. He purchased fabric from Strauss and made button-fly pants, which were such a hit among customers, he decided to patent them. Modern-day jeans were born, though at the time, they were called "waist overalls" or simply "overalls." Reuters —Paris-born actor and singer Robert Clary, who survived 31 months in Nazi concentration camps but later co-starred in “Hogan’s Heroes,” the US sitcom set in a German World War II prisoner of war (POW) camp, has died at the age of 96. “Hogan’s Heroes” starred Bob Crane as American Colonel Robert Hogan, with Richard Dawson, Larry Hovis and Ivan Dixon playing other POWs. “Hogan’s Heroes” was popular with TV viewers during its run on the CBS network and for decades afterward in syndication even though some critics considered it in bad taste. In 1980, alarm over people trying to deny the Holocaust prompted Clary to end his self-imposed silence about his experiences. He also wrote an autobiography, “From the Holocaust to Hogan’s Heroes.”“We must learn from history,” Clary told the Reno Gazette-Journal in 2002, “which we don’t.”

Fed's Brainard: Crypto finance needs strong regulation

Nov 14 (Reuters) - Recent turmoil in the cryptocurrency market shows the need for it to be firmly regulated the same way traditional finance is, Federal Reserve Vice Chair Lael Brainard said on Monday. "It's really concerning to see that retail investors are really getting hurt by these losses," Brainard said in an interview with Bloomberg in Washington, repeating her long-held view that crypto finance needs strong regulation. While the crypto industry has touted digital assets as fundamentally different from traditional finance, Brainard has argued the sector has proven to be susceptible to the same risks and should be subject to the same rules. "It reinforces I think this need to make sure that crypto finance, because it is no different than traditional finance in the risks that it exposes, needs to be under the regulatory perimeter." {nL4N32A0P7}"There need to be strong regulatory guardrails," Brainard said, noting that could include bringing some crypto finance into compliance with existing rules and in some cases expanding regulation.
After learning about its Russian roots from Reuters, it removed Pushwoosh software from seven public-facing apps, citing security concerns. The U.S. Army said it had removed an app containing Pushwoosh code in March because of the same concerns. Pushwoosh code has been embedded into almost 8,000 apps in the Google and Apple app stores, according to Appfigures, an app intelligence website. "We haven't found any clear sign of deceptive or malicious intent in Pushwoosh's activity, which certainly doesn't diminish the risk of having app data leaking to Russia," he added. The CDC apps that contained Pushwoosh code included the agency's main app and others set up to share information on a wide range of health concerns.

National Democrats were fairly happy on Election Day as they dodged a predicted trouncing at the polls, but state Democrats might have even more to celebrate. And Democrats appear on track to flip the state House in Michigan, as well as in Pennsylvania and Minnesota, according to the National Conference of State Legislatures (NCSL), the nonpartisan organization that represents legislative chambers. Democratic wins this cycle signals a shift in state legislative priorities that could have major ramifications on contentious issues. The Republican-controlled state legislatures in Pennsylvania and Michigan had entertained election denial conspiracies after the 2020 election, for example. "Success does beget success," she said, noting that many state legislative candidates outperformed those competing at the federal level.

EU backs watering down of final Basel bank capital rules

LONDON, Nov 8 (Reuters) - European Union member states have backed a temporary watering down and two-year delay to 2025 for the final leg of the globally agreed Basel III bank capital rules, the Czech EU presidency said on Tuesday. EU states will now negotiate a final deal with the European Parliament in early 2023. Most of the Basel III rules, a set of tougher capital rules for banks after the global financial crisis more than a decade ago, have already been implemented. EU ministers backed a two-year delay to the start date for rolling out the final rules, pushing it back to January, 2025. Smaller banks would benefit from simpler disclosure, and EU states pushed back against attempts at stricter EU harmonisation in checking whether top bank staff are 'fit and proper'.
Former U.S. President Donald Trump speaks during a pre-election rally to support Republican candidates in Latrobe, Pennsylvania, U.S., November 5, 2022. WASHINGTON — After weeks of intensifying speculation, former President Donald Trump said Monday that he will make a "big announcement" on Tuesday, Nov. 15 from his Mar-a-Lago resort, where he is expected to launch his 2024 presidential campaign. "I'm going to be making a very big announcement on Tuesday, Nov. 15 at Mar-a-Lago in Palm Beach, Florida," Trump said at a Save America rally in Vandalia, Ohio on the eve of the midterm elections. A Trump spokesman did not respond to a request from CNBC to confirm that his Nov. 15 event will be a campaign launch. Instead, his remarks sounded far more like a tailor-made rally speech for his own upcoming presidential campaign, with strong echoes of his 2016 campaign speeches.
As pension funds scrambled for cash to meet margin calls, the Bank of England intervened to stabilise the market and avoid the collapse of some LDI-exposed funds. But pension schemes that could not meet margin calls in time - many of them smaller schemes - had their positions liquidated by LDI fund managers. Larger schemes in segregated funds were more likely to have retained their hedges, industry sources said. Large schemes in segregated funds pay lower fees for more volume - a benefit small schemes cannot enjoy. LDI fund managers BlackRock (BLK.N) and Insight Investment did not respond to requests for comment.
Cassie Glubzinski, 36, began her job search in January after nearly 12 years away from the workforce. Despite the Great Resignation, many Americans haven't found the job search as easy as some suggest. "I felt woefully inadequate because when it came to writing work experience, my experience was 10 years old," she said. "So it's cyclical because you're wanting to work, but you need work experience to work, but you need the job to get the work experience." "It was very much right place, right time, right background, and right homework done," she said.
REUTERS/Kevin LamarqueThat was why Spanberger was at a winery this week imploring volunteers to hit the phones. Polls continue to show voters frustrated over high consumer prices and blaming the party in power from President Joe Biden on down. A former CIA officer, Spanberger has criticized her party’s progressive wing and has attempted to appeal to independent voters. To Republican Heye, the reason Spanberger and other once-safe Democrats are struggling in the final days of the campaign is simple. “The American people are really pissed off in general,” he said, “and are looking to punish those in charge.”

[1/3] Solar panels are installed on the rooftops of residential houses in Modhera, India's first round-the-clock solar-powered village, in the western state of Gujarat, India, October 19, 2022. Now, however, his machine moves on solar power as earlier this month Prajapati's village of around 6,500 residents, consisting mainly of potters, tailors, farmers and shoemakers, was declared India's first village to run entirely on solar energy all the time. The government buys excess energy produced here from residents if they do not use all of the capacity allotted to the households. For Reena Ben, 36, a housewife, who also works as a tailor part time, the solar power has hugely aided her work. "When we got access to solar power, I bought an electric motor worth 2,000 rupees ($24) to attach to the sewing machine.
A small church organization in Virginia is helping unhoused people get back into permanent homes. In addition to losing access to stable housing, Walker says, people lose access to their communities. "Homelessness can be life changing, it can be a matter of life and death," Walker told Insider. His monthly disability payment — under $800 — is less than the median Virginia Beach rent of more than $1,000 for a one-bedroom apartment. Research shows that providing housing subsidies, alongside case management and supportive services, can help people experiencing chronic homelessness achieve long-term housing stability.

On game days, Jimmy Garoppolo, the San Francisco 49ers starting quarterback, usually bounds off the team bus in a svelte suit, looking more like a media mogul than a Super Bowl winner. His pinched jacket and tapered trousers could well be from some Italian tailoring institution like Zegna. But their actual origin is often Gentleman’s Playbook, a custom-suit brand run out of a Hoboken, N.J., apartment by Tom Marchitelli, 41, a former hedge-fund accountant. The brand is barely known to the broader fashion world. But through locker-room word-of-mouth and furious social-media outreach, Mr. Marchitelli has become a go-to for professional athletes.
