Royal Mail's parent company International Distributions Services said on Wednesday it had agreed to a 3.57 billion pound ($4.55 billion) formal takeover offer by Czech billionaire Daniel Kretinsky. The offer valued IDS, which owns Royal Mail and international parcels network GLS, at 370 pence per share. Royal Mail has been trying to transform itself into a parcel-led business as letter volumes declined sharply over the years. Kretinsky has said that private investment in Royal Mail was crucial given its challenging situation with poor service delivery, slow transformation and increasing competition. Any takeover bid for Royal Mail would be subject to "normal" national security scrutiny but it would not be opposed in principle, Finance Minister Jeremy Hunt said earlier.

Bangkok CNN —Thailand’s former Prime Minister Thaksin Shinawatra has been indicted on lese majeste charges, authorities said Wednesday, in the latest twist in a decades-long political saga in the Southeast Asian kingdom. The case, filed by police, alleged Thaksin violated Thailand’s notoriously harsh royal insult law during an interview he gave in 2015 to the South Korean newspaper Chosun Ilbo. “The attorney general has decided to indict Thaksin on all charges,” spokesperson Prayuth Bejraguna, told reporters Wednesday. Earlier this month, the death of a young Thai activist in pre-trial detention for lese majeste charges shocked many in the country and sparked renewed calls for justice reform. A person died on Wednesday after they “ended up” inside a running plane engine at Schiphol Airport in Amsterdam, officials said, although the circumstances of the person’s death remained unclear. KLM Royal Dutch Airlines, the flag carrier of the Netherlands, said in a statement that the episode involved its Flight KL1341, which had been scheduled to take off for Billund, Denmark. “We are currently taking care of the passengers and employees who witnessed the incident at Schiphol,” the airline said. It was unclear whether the person who died, whose name had not been made public, entered the plane’s engine or whether they were pulled into it. KLM did not say whether the person who died was an airline employee or airport worker.
