Oil edges up as China seeks to calm economic fears

China Daily via REUTERS/file photo Acquire Licensing RightsLONDON, Aug 17 (Reuters) - Oil prices crept up on Thursday after China's central bank sought to stem the rising tide of pessimism over the country's property market and wider economy. Higher interest rates increase borrowing costs for businesses and consumers, which could slow economic growth and reduce oil demand. On a more bullish note, China made a rare draw on crude oil inventories in July, the first time in 33 months that it had dipped into storage. Data released on Wednesday showed that U.S. crude oil inventories fell by nearly 6 million barrels last week on strong exports and refining run rates.

REUTERS/Dado Ruvic/Illustration Acquire Licensing RightsAug 16 (Reuters) - A scientist at Harvard used Google's cloud platform to clone a supercomputer for a heart disease study, in a novel move that other researchers could follow to get around a shortage of powerful computing resources and speed up their work. But cloud computing operations aren't designed to handle the demands researchers have. They are designed for millions of individual, relatively small computing tasks - things such as streaming video, serving webpages or database access. Modifying cloud infrastructure to behave like a supercomputer requires changes in the software, networking and physical design of the hardware, Magro said.

What is Maslow’s hierarchy of needs? “Human needs arrange themselves in hierarchies of pre-potency,” Maslow wrote in the 1943 paper “A Theory of Human Needs,” which first described the model. Level 2: Safety needsWith basic needs fulfilled, the next level of needs moves to safety. Examples of Maslow’s hierarchy of needsAside from its psychological application, countless disciplines have found Maslow’s model to be a useful teaching tool. Common challenges to Maslow’s model argue that it is too arbitrary, or that humans needs exist more as a cascading spectrum.

Recovering profit margins may prompt complex refiners to maximise yields of transport fuels, causing excess naphtha output as a byproduct in a tepid petrochemical market and further depressing feedstock margins. Mandell expects margins to continue to perform well throughout the year heading into higher-demand crop planting season and into winter in the United States. "The healthy margins reflect the bull market for diesel combined with still strong gasoline cracks even if gasoline did weaken sharply on week. U.S. oil companies said during recent second quarter earnings presentations that strong global demand for fuels and low product inventories are driving robust profits. The Future of Rap Is Female
  + stars: | 2023-08-09 | by ( Niela Orr | Photographs Adrienne Raquel | ) www.nytimes.com   time to read: +22 min
The Future of Rap Is Female As their male counterparts turn depressive and paranoid, it’s the women who are having all the fun. In the mid-’80s, the dynamics shifted slightly, when UTFO released “Roxanne, Roxanne,” a comical torch song dissing a woman who rejected the men’s advances. Like good sex, raunchy rap is only fun if all parties are completely enthusiastic, and this music provides necessary female perspectives to match what the men make. In Miami one weekend in late July, Rolling Loud, one of the biggest annual hip-hop festivals, made itself into a microcosm of the rap world. There’s a relentless gender pessimism in the air, too — on the street, on dating apps, in the Supreme Court and, of course, in rap music.

Gasoline prices usually rise ahead of the U.S. summer driving season. Money managers in the week to Aug. 1 boosted their net long holdings of NYMEX RBOB gasoline futures to the highest since late February 2022. HEDGE FUND-FUELED TURNAROUNDGasoline futures have risen around 14% this year, compared with a roughly 2% rise for U.S. crude futures . To guarantee a profit, they need the rise in gasoline prices to be sustained until hurricane activity is confirmed. But for gasoline to continue its rise against the price of crude oil, there needs to be a hurricane in the Gulf of Mexico, they said.

Chartbook: Electricity and diesel useIndustrial electricity use and distillate fuel oil consumption are both correlated with the manufacturing and freight cycle and therefore with the purchasing managers index. Distillate fuel oil consumption actually rose by almost +0.8% in the three months from March to May compared with a year earlier. The strength of domestic distillate consumption helps explain why fuel oil inventories have remained well below the prior ten-year seasonal average. DISTILLATE SUPPLIEDThe resilience of industrial electricity use and especially apparent distillate fuel oil consumption may indicate the ISM manufacturing index is overstating the depth of the downturn. Accumulation of secondary and tertiary stocks in April and May would imply lower apparent consumption in June and July.
