WASHINGTON, July 27 (Reuters Breakingviews) - Two U.S. lawmakers have an idea for reining in Big Tech: get someone else to do it. They include protecting young users of social media, and countering anticompetitive behavior. A new watchdog that sets out to safeguard young users would overlap with some of the Federal Communications Commission’s duties. Instead of spending time and taxpayer dollars on a super-regulator, lawmakers would do better to get their act together, and face Big Tech themselves. The proposal, introduced in the Senate on July 27, would set new rules for tech mergers, data security, and safeguards for young users, according to the essay.

Iran is once again deploying police officers on the streets to enforce its conservative dress code for women, which many have flouted since the protest movement that rattled the country began last fall, according to state news media and social media posts. Months into the protests, Iran quietly withdrew the morality police from the streets in an apparent concession to try to calm the nationwide upheaval against the government. The protests began last September after Mahsa Amini, a 22-year-old woman, died in custody after the morality police accused her of violating the dress code and arrested her on a Tehran street. A spokesman for Iran’s police force, Gen. Saeed Montazer al-Mahdi, said on Sunday that effective immediately, police officers would begin patrolling to “deal with those who, unfortunately, regardless of the consequences of dressing outside the norm, still insist on breaking the norm.” He added that the patrols would “expand public security and strengthen the foundation of the family.”He said the police would first warn people caught breaking the hijab law governing dress, which requires women to cover their hair and wear long, loose clothing that hides the shape of their bodies. Amazon is fighting its inclusion in the European Union's list of companies that are subject to landmark online content rules, marking the first U.S. challenge to the proposed legislation. Fellow U.S. tech giants Google , Meta and Apple are also subject to the rules. Amazon disputed it being labeled a VLOP under the act, saying the designation applies to companies with advertising as their primary revenue and that distribute speech and information. "If the VLOP designation were to be applied to Amazon and not to other large retailers across the EU, Amazon would be unfairly singled out and forced to meet onerous administrative obligations that don't benefit EU consumers." Last month, German online fashion and lifestyle retailer Zalando filed a suit contesting its designation as a VLOP, arguing retail constitutes the majority of its business.

Amazon has filed a petition with an EU court challenging its upcoming Digital Services Act. The retail giant asked the court to annul its designation as a "very large online platform." 19 companies have been designated as "very large online platforms" or "very large online search engines" because they reach at least 45 million monthly active users. And this means they will have extra obligations, including being required to tackle online hate speech and disinformation. Amazon has asked the court to annul its designation as a "very large online platform" (VLOP) under the act, according to a summary of the petition viewed by Insider.

China and the Solomon Islands on Monday signed a deal on police cooperation as part of an upgrade of their relations to a “comprehensive strategic partnership,” four years after the Pacific nation switched ties from Taiwan to China. “In just four years, the relationship between China and the Solomon Islands has developed rapidly, and we can now say that it is very fruitful,” Li told Sogavare. China will continue to provide assistance to the Solomon Islands to enhance its law enforcement capacity, according to a joint statement released by China’s state-run Xinhua news agency. China has long supported so-called South-South cooperation, which refers to cooperation between developing nations as equals for mutual benefit. Chinese telecoms giant Huawei is already building a cellular network in the Solomon Islands, financed by a $66 million Chinese EXIM bank loan.
