Energy names were the biggest winners in the market this week, as a major production cut by OPEC+ boosted oil prices. In addition, eight of the top 10-performing S & P 500 stocks this week are energy names. This year, Halliburton's stock price has increased more than 34%, including this week's more than 22% gain. Outside of energy names, analysts are also very bullish on Western Digital. Energy names Devon Energy , Hess , Pioneer Natural Resources and Schlumberger complete the list.
In the previous session, the S & P 500 reached a new bear market low of 3,623.29, indicating that stocks could still have further to fall. Further support came Monday, when closely followed Apple analyst Ming-Chi Kuo reported the company asked manufacturing giant Foxconn to "switch production lines of the iPhone 14 to iPhone 14 Pro models." "Aggregate, Pro mix increased from an average of 41% to 56%, reflecting the benefit from Apple's efforts to concentrate upgrades in the Pro Models. The result is the average selling price of the iPhone 14 is probably around $940, the analysts concluded, compared with around $852 last year. When the government decides to start buying, oil prices could get some nice support, which would be good for our energy holdings. When a player like the U.S. government goes from supplier to buyer, its a pretty positive sign for those that benefit from higher oil prices. Remember, the variable part of the dividend payments that all three companies pay are tied directly to free cash flow generation. Coterra's free cash flow breakeven is about $40 per barrel as of its second quarter results. In July 2021, U.S. oil prices fell below $70 after OPEC said it would increase output as Covid fears weighed on global demand.

But Energy stocks are acting like this may be the top. Lately, traders have been selling off oil stocks under the theory that profits in 2023 will likely be lower than 2022, not higher. The reason: the primary determinant of oil company profits are oil prices, and estimates for oil are coming down. For much of 2022, oil has been in "backwardation": futures prices for the most immediate contracts have been higher than prices farther out. Bulls are cheering the drop in Energy No one cheering for stocks to rally are crying over the drop in oil, or the drop in oil stocks.
We hold energy companies because of their ability to generate strong free cash flows and return money to shareholders. But we readily admit we should have trimmed some of our positions much earlier when oil prices peaked. If energy prices fall, our energy stocks may get hit, but our holdings that are currently experiencing margin pressure due to high energy prices will get some relief. Remember, even if our energy stocks go down, they're paying us in dividends and buybacks to hang tight. And if production can't keep up with demand, oil prices go back up, which serves oil and energy companies well.
The appeal for high-dividend stocks is growing fast as the market's turmoil and surging inflation shows no signs of easing. Stocks with high dividend payouts had been ignored for years as growth stocks with dramatic price appreciation took center stage. The company pays a 4.7% dividend, more than doubling that of the S & P 500. Billionaire investor Leon Cooperman previously told CNBC that energy stocks were cheap relative to commodity prices. The chairman and CEO of the Omega Family Office held a number of high-dividend stocks, including Devon Energy , Coterra Energy , Energy Transfer and Pioneer Natural Resources , some of which pay as much as 8% in dividends.
Supply & Demand — free market On the Y-axis (the vertical one on the left) we have price. The demand line slopes from the upper left to the bottom right, and the supply line goes from the bottom left to the upper right. To illustrate this tight supply, we shift our supply line to the left as moving left on the X-axis indicates a lower quantity of supply. Supply & Demand — supply constrained market As we can see above, this small shift in supply — with no change in demand — creates a new equilibrium point at which we see a higher price level (P2). Supply & Demand — supply constrained with demand destruction By lowering demand, we can reach a new equilibrium level (marked in red).
