Two of the sources said the request was for a full year of funding, explaining the large size. Bloomberg first reported that Biden was considering making a $100 billion request. Senator Mitch McConnell, the chamber's top Republican, said he expected the request to include assistance for Israel, Ukraine and Taiwan, and said Republicans want it to include "something serious" for the border. Top Biden administration officials will hold a classified briefing on Wednesday for the Senate on the situation in Israel and Gaza.

Gaza authorities said more than 2,200 people have been killed, a quarter of them children, and nearly 10,000 wounded. On Friday, the Israeli military told residents of the northern half of the Gaza Strip, which includes the enclave's biggest settlement, Gaza City, to move south immediately. Hamas told people not to leave and says roads out are unsafe. Israel says Hamas is preventing people from leaving in order to use them as human shields, which Hamas denies. The only route out of Gaza not under Israeli control was a checkpoint with Egypt at Rafah.

(AP) — A local Democratic official in Connecticut's largest city invoked her 5th Amendment right against self-incrimination Friday rather than answer questions in court about allegations of illegal ballot box stuffing during a recent mayoral primary. In some of them, a woman resembling Geter-Pataky, who works as a greeter at the City Hall annex, can be seen making repeat trips to an absentee ballot drop box outside the building early in the morning on Sept. 5 and stuffing documents inside. In other videos, it appears she hands other people documents that could be ballots and escorts them to the box. Gomes' attorney in the lawsuit, William Bloss, said the videos prove widespread abuse of the absentee ballot system in Bridgeport. Under Connecticut law, certain family members, police, local election officials or a caregiver can drop off a ballot for an absentee voter.

They had fled to a cave in a mountainous part of Porto Moniz and an operation to rescue them from the area was under way, it said on social media. A few houses have been destroyed in Calheta and Porto Moniz, but no serious injuries reported so far, authorities said. The survey gives the clearest and most in-depth view yet on how corporate Argentina sees the dollarization debate, which is at the heart of the election race towards the Oct. 22 vote. Some two-thirds of those Reuters spoke to supported a bi-monetary system proposed by conservative candidate Patricia Bullrich, who is popular with business leaders but lagging in wider opinion polls. A new global assessment has found that 41% of amphibian species that scientists have studied are threatened with extinction, meaning they are either vulnerable, endangered or critically endangered. “Amphibians are the world's most threatened animals,” said Duke University's Junjie Yao, a frog researcher who was not involved in the study. But a growing percentage of amphibian species are now also pushed to the brink by novel diseases and climate change, the study found. The study identified the greatest concentrations of threatened amphibian species in several biodiversity hotspots, including the Caribbean islands, the tropical Andes, Madagascar and Sri Lanka. Other locations with large numbers of threatened amphibians include Brazil’s Atlantic Forest, southern China and the southeastern United States.
