To prepare managers to discuss pay with employees, Amazon shares a lengthy Q&A guideline that addresses some of the most pressing questions, according to internal documents obtained by Insider. This includes base pay, variable pay, other cash, and equity in the form of Restricted Stock Units (RSUs) or stock. A: We plan employee's total compensation in outlook years. Q: Why am I positioned at XX in my pay range and how can I increase my pay? Clearly and directly explain the reason there was no base pay increase:"Employee A, you are at the base pay max."
Amazon employees have lost more than 30% on stock awards they got last year. Even CEO Andy Jassy saw his 2022 realized compensation drop 25% because of the stock price decline. Amazon wants its managers to stress the "long-term" value of stock and "ownership" of work during annual employee compensation reviews that started earlier this month. That price is based on a 30-day trailing average stock price. If an employee disagrees with their pay, managers are to have an "open discussion" and determine whether an adjustment is necessary.

Global PC shipments slide in Q1, Apple takes biggest hit - IDC
  + stars: | 2023-04-10 | by ( ) www.reuters.com   time to read: +2 min
In the report published Sunday, the International Data Corporation (IDC) said global PC shipments numbered 56.9 million in the first quarter of this year, down from 80.2 million in the same period last year. Of the top five PC companies analysed in the report, Apple's Q1 shipments saw the largest drop of 40.5% from the same period in 2022, with Dell Technologies Inc (DELL.N) coming in second with a drop of 31%. Lenovo Group Ltd (0992.HK), Asustek Computer Inc (2357.TW) and HP Inc (HPQ.N) also faced declines in shipments, the IDC said. In February, Apple reported that sales of its Mac computers, which had boomed during the wave of working from home during the pandemic, declined 29% YoY to $7.7 billion in their most recent quarter. Shipment volume in Q1 2023 was noticeably lower than the 59.2 million units shipped in Q1 2019 and 60.6 million in Q1 2018," IDC said.
Samsung's plan to cut memory chip production signals a potentially sooner-than-expected recovery for the broader memory chip market, according to Wall Street. Investors seemed to laud the news, sending shares of Micron Technology and Western Digital up about 8% each on Monday. Citi analyst Christopher Danely called the news a "huge positive" for the dynamic random access memory, or DRAM, industry. But while the cuts from Samsung should help ease some pricing pressures, caveats persist, with Morgan Stanley's Joseph Moore expecting a "fairly muted" upturn from the production cuts and slow margin recovery even in 2024. "Investors are much more excited than industry contacts around this, given obvious green shoots implied from production cuts," he wrote.
A recent International Data Corporation report outlined global PC shipment data from Q1 of this year. Demand has dropped across the industry, with a 29% decrease compared to last year. Apple, in particular, has suffered from a 40.5% drop off in demand for its computers. Among the five biggest manufacturers, Apple was impacted the most: The number of Apple PCs shipped dropped 40.5% from the first quarter of 2022 to the first quarter of 2023. Global shipments include shipments to end users and distribution channels, like BestBuy and other electronics retailers.
Chip stocks made a breathtaking comeback in the first quarter, but don't be surprised if the rally gives up some of its gains, investors warn. The semiconductor sector on Friday wrapped up its best quarter since 2020 as investors rotated back into the downtrodden industry, with names like Nvidia notching its best quarterly stretch since 2001. The recent tear in semiconductor stocks brings the sector into overbought territory versus non-financial cyclicals, said Credit Suisse's Andrew Garthwaite in a recent note. Like many investors, Niles views Nvidia as a dominant AI play despite its rich valuation . While the stock's given those gains, many investors viewed the print as a sign of a bottom.

OAKLAND, California, March 28 (Reuters) - Artificial intelligence chip startup Cerebras Systems on Tuesday said it released open source ChatGPT-like models for the research and business community to use for free in an effort to foster more collaboration. Silicon Valley-based Cerebras released seven models all trained on its AI supercomputer called Andromeda, including smaller 111 million parameter language models to a larger 13 billion parameter model. Cerebras said the smaller models can be deployed on phones or smart speakers while the bigger ones run on PCs or servers, although complex tasks like large passage summarization require larger models. Most of the AI models today are trained on Nvidia Corp's (NVDA.O) chips, but more and more startups like Cerebras are trying to take share in that market. The models trained on Cerebras machines can also be used on Nvidia systems for further training or customization, said Feldman.

LONDON, March 17 (Reuters) - Most of Britain's passport office workers will go on strike for five weeks starting next month in a pay dispute, potentially disrupting the delivery of passports ahead of the summer holiday period. Passport officers in Belfast, Northern Ireland could also strike if they vote in favour of walking out in a ballot that closes on Friday. The PCS union has demanded a 10% pay rise for civil servants as UK inflation is now running at just over 10%. Passport officers had previously rejected a 2% pay rise. The government's passport offices are the sole issuer of UK passports, issuing over 5 million of them each year, meaning any strike by officers working there will likely cause significant disruption to services.
