New York CNN —More than 400 Teamsters are on strike at the Molson Coors brewery in Fort Worth, Texas, impacting production for North America’s second largest brewer. The work stoppage, which began Saturday, comes ahead of a March 1 strike deadline that the Teamsters have set for 5,000 members at Anheuser-Busch, the nation’s largest brewer. In its most recent statement on the state of those talks the union said a strike at Anheuser-Busch “appears unavoidable.”The Molson Coors strike comes as the company has been reporting strong sales and profits. Molson Coors said about 30% of its North American work force is unionized, but much of that is the workers at three Canadian breweries. “While we respect the union’s right to strike, we have strong contingency plans and are well equipped to ensure consumers will be able to buy their favorite Molson Coors products,” said the company’s statement.

New York CNN —Lionel Messi’s debut in his first full Major League Soccer season might not cost fans the extraordinary prices seen last year for his first-ever game with Inter Miami, but they do show that “Messi Mania” hasn’t diminished despite his rocky preseason. That’s 1,257% more expensive than the cheapest, or “get in” price of last season’s home opener when it cost $7 for a seat. Prices on the secondary market are elevated for the rest of Inter Miami’s season with tickets about 70% more expensive than last year. In particular, Inter Miami sales are 150-times higher compared to the start of last season and is the most in-demand MLS team, with the Los Angeles Galaxy in second and the New England Revolution in third. “The surge in sales for Inter Miami, and the league as a whole, are a testament to his legacy as a soccer star,” said StubHub spokesperson Adam Budell told CNN.

CNN —Olive oil has many health benefits, including lowering the risk for dementia, poor heart health, cognitive decline or early death. Here’s what you need to know to select the best possible olive oil for your diet. Harvest and processingHistorically, brands that maintain a high quality of olive oil are those that put care into the process from the moment of harvest, Kyriakides said. Extra virgin olive oil is the healthiest version because it’s cold-pressed only once without high heat or chemical solvents. “That will help them develop a more discerning palate for olive oil.

Though one of the most potent and long-running (or at least long-stomping) forces in movies, Godzilla has never before rubbed elbows at the Academy Awards. At the Oscar luncheon, Steven Spielberg warmly greeted Yamazaki and told him he had seen “Godzilla Minus One” three times. But “Godzilla Minus One” returns to the essential nature of Godzilla as a sober symbol of nuclear holocaust and atomic trauma. My intent was to put a spotlight on what Godzilla represented.”In “Godzilla Minus One,” just as WWII is ending, Godzilla is growing. But unlike more broadly blockbuster-styled Godzilla films, “Godzilla Minus One” is rigorously rooted in a Japanese perspective.

A traditional automaker just turned a profit on EVs
  + stars: | 2024-02-15 | by ( Chris Isidore | ) edition.cnn.com   time to read: +3 min
New York CNN —Electric vehicles are finally turning a profit for Stellantis, CEO Carlos Tavares said Thursday, and, in contrast to some rivals, it will not cut back on producing EVs. The announcement marks an important milestone for electric vehicles and for traditional automakers, which have struggled to make money on EVs even as demand has grown. Ford, the only company to break out results separately for electric and traditional vehicles, reported that it lost $4.7 billion in EVs last year, or more than $40,000 per vehicle. But he said that EVs, while profitable, are still not as profitable as traditional gas-powered vehicles. That includes profit sharing for about 38,000 United Auto Workers union members at an average of $13,860, down from $14,760 a year earlier.

Moller-Maersk, the second-largest global ocean carrier, is advising customers to prepare for a Red Sea crisis that could stretch well into the second half of this year. "Unfortunately, we don't see any change in the Red Sea happening anytime soon," Charles van der Steene, regional president for Maersk North America, tells CNBC. After attacks on two U.S.-flagged Maersk vessels on January 24, the Maersk Detroit and Maersk Chesapeake, Maersk Line, Limited — a U.S. subsidiary of Maersk, which operates U.S.-flagged vessels independently — announced it would no longer traverse the Red Sea. The global shipping and logistics company's cautious view of the Red Sea safety conditions comes despite a U.S.-led multinational military operation in the region, Operation Prosperity Guardian. "Our advice to our customers is specifically about building upon the uncertainty by being agile," said van der Steene.

James Quincey, CEO of Coca-Cola Co., speaking on "Squawk Box" at the WEF in Davos, Switzerland, on Jan. 18, 2023. Inflation is moderating in most markets, after a stretch in which the beverage maker relied on price hikes to drive higher revenue, Coca-Cola CEO James Quincey said Tuesday. But Coke's price hikes have slowed from the last two years' double-digit increases. Coke's overall prices were up 9% in the fourth quarter, but Quincey said that came from hyperinflation in markets such as Argentina. In the majority of Coke's markets, shoppers were only paying about 3.5% more for their drinks than they were a year earlier.

How GKids Became the A24 of Animation
  + stars: | 2024-02-12 | by ( Carlos Aguilar | ) www.nytimes.com   time to read: +1 min
The hand-drawn movie has a real shot at winning and becoming the first GKids release to do so. How has a small outfit focused on animation managed to have such an outsized effect in Hollywood? Eric Beckman, a former music industry executive, founded GKids with the intent of redefining American audiences’ perception of animation as more than a children’s medium. At the time, family-friendly, computer-generated and stylistically similar studio productions had an even tighter stronghold on animation in the United States than they do today. GKids has since filled a precious gap by consistently releasing bold animated work from around the world.

DETROIT – General Motors plans to spend $19 billion over roughly the next decade to source critical materials for use in electric vehicle batteries from LG Chem, the companies said Wednesday. The long-term supply contract will see LG Chem supply GM with more than 500,000 tons of cathode materials – include nickel, cobalt, manganese, aluminum – from 2026 through 2035, the South Korean supplier said in a release. LG Chem said it aims to "bolster cooperation with GM in the North American market" through the deal. Jeff Morrison, GM vice president of global purchasing and supply chain, said the "contract builds on GM's commitment to create a strong, sustainable battery EV supply chain to support our fast-growing EV production needs." The contract is likely one of the largest, if not the largest, EV supply deals that GM has signed.
