Vice President Kamala Harris called the rate cut “welcome news,” while former President Donald Trump suggested, without evidence, that the decision could be politically motivated. With less than 50 days until Election Day, another question has emerged: Will the rate cut matter to voters? In fact, they already have – mortgages are based on bond yields, which have fallen in recent weeks in anticipation of a rate cut. Harris responded to the rate cut by saying she’s focused on bringing down prices. This story has been updated with reaction to the Fed’s rate cut announcement.

The FBI is warning election offices to be on the lookout after threatening letters containing suspicious substances were sent to the offices of multiple secretaries of state throughout the country. A senior law enforcement official confirms elections officials in at least six states received packages on Monday, but so far none of the packages have been found to contain any actual hazardous material. Secretaries of state, attorney general offices and state election offices in Nebraska, Iowa, Kansas, Tennessee, Wyoming and Oklahoma were targeted. The FBI, United States Postal Inspection Service (USPIS), and state and local law enforcement partners are investigating multiple letters containing suspicious substances which have been mailed to Secretary of State's offices. The incident is also the second time in the past year that threats have hit multiple state election offices simultaneously.

Ahead of National Voter Registration Day, DNC chair Jaime Harrison said in a statement to NBC News that the effort is aimed especially at helping young people navigate the voting process. The DNC said the information they are sharing is nonpartisan, though it’s being run by a party committee. Harrison says the DNC is making it “easier than ever” to get the information voters need to exercise their right to vote. Since the 2020 election, the DNC has invested more than $30 million dollars to expand its “I Will Vote” initiative. According to the DNC, its hotline has received more than 17,000 calls in both English and Spanish since the beginning of the 2024 presidential election cycle.

Third-party candidates have played a big role in deciding key presidential battleground states in the last few years — meaning which (and how many) candidates will actually be on the ballot state by state could matter a lot in a close election. After spending millions to get on state ballots, Kennedy has attempted to pull back since endorsing former President Donald Trump. And there are still other third-party candidates, including some familiar faces and some new ones, whose presence on key state ballots could affect the November results. In 2016, 6% of all voters cast votes for third-party candidates, a dynamic that helped to lower the share of the vote Trump needed to win in key battleground states. But this is where third-party candidates’ battleground ballot access efforts stand at the moment.

PHOENIX — Members of an Arizona tribe are trying to persuade a federal judge to extend a temporary ban on exploratory drilling for a lithium project near lands they have used for religious and cultural ceremonies for centuries. The case is among the latest legal fights pitting Native American tribes and environmentalists against President Joe Biden’s administration as green energy projects encroach on lands that are culturally significant. The springs have served as a place of healing and prayer for generations, the tribe has said in court filings. Federal land managers also are expected to issue a draft environmental review of a lithium mine planned by Australian company Ioneer Ltd. between Reno and Las Vegas. Backers of Arizona Lithium’s project include the Navajo Transitional Energy Company, which announced its plans in 2022 to join with the Australian company and work as a contractor on the project.

Davis, whose group is running the ads, has echoed the charges from Trump and insisted that the federal government isn't doing enough to stop noncitizens from voting. In a statement, Davis accused politicians of courting illegal votes and attacked states he said were refusing to enforce the law against noncitizens’ voting. “Left-wing radicals in Congress are blocking the SAVE Act, which would protect our federal elections from noncitizens voting. “We are doing a public service by informing people that only citizens can vote in federal elections. Latino voters increasingly support greater immigration control, with recent polls finding a rise in the group agreeing with GOP calls for more border security.

Trump won the presidency in 2016 by stunning Democrat Hillary Clinton to win all three states by a combined margin of about 80,000 votes. But, as in other states, Democrats have been concerned about the risk of depressed turnout and some gains for Trump among Black voters in Philadelphia. Eight years later, the two states split again, when Roosevelt comfortably won Pennsylvania and Michigan narrowly went to Republican Wendell Willkie. This trio of states has arguably become the most consistent tipping point in American politics. In the nine elections since 1920 when they split their vote, the candidate who carried two of these three states won seven times.

CNN —One of the best pollsters in America recently came out with its latest survey, and it’s good news for Kamala Harris. That result fell well short of the lead he had in preelection state polling. The fact that the Selzer poll is indicating a similar shift in Harris’ favor in Iowa makes me think the Wisconsin polls may be on to something. This Selzer poll could also be an outlier, and much could change between now and Election Day. The bottom line: You’d much rather have the Selzer poll in your corner than not.

Oxfam recently released its Best and Worst States to Work in the U.S. report, which considers criteria like minimum wage, paid leave and the ability to organize. "There are vast disparities and access to critical workplace protections that vary by state," says Inimai Chettiar, president of the work-family justice organization A Better Balance. Oxfam then narrowed in on policies that have an outsized effect on women and women of color, specifically, to rank the best states for female employees. Oxfam examined each state's tipped minimum wage, for example, as nearly seven in 10 tipped workers are women, according to the National Women's Law Center. Nevada"I think these states generally have been a little bit more forward thinking in terms of their leave and discrimination policies," says Chettiar.

Investors may be better off if November's election ends with neither candidate having enough wiggle room to enact their economic policies, according to Citigroup. "We maintain our ongoing view that either candidate's policy platforms are U.S. equity negative, but notably in a 'sweep' context. We mark the Harris platform as incrementally more negative (-4% to -6%) vs the Trump platform (0% to -4%). A split congress with either candidate mitigates most of the nearer term risk to fair values," the note said. … We continue to reiterate our ongoing concern that the deficit circumstance will move more front and center with investors post election," the Citigroup said.

Abortion rights opponents had argued in a pair of lawsuits that the amendment to expand abortion rights violated a state rule that says a ballot proposal must only address one subject. Matt Heffron, a senior counsel for a firm that argued against allowing the abortion rights initiative to stay on the ballot, slammed the high court's ruling. Colorado, New York and Maryland are the liberal-leaning states with abortion ballot measures. Arizona and Nevada — two key battleground states in the presidential election — also have abortion ballot initiatives. That same year, Kansas voters cast ballots against a proposed amendment which would have removed language guaranteeing abortion rights in the state.

CNN —Donald Trump wanted to spend this week attacking one of Democratic rival Kamala Harris’ biggest political vulnerabilities. The promotion of the claims overshadowed a series of speeches aimed at the economy and blaming Harris for border security failures.
